European Tapestries: History, Conservation, and Creation

Tapestry is an art that combines painting and weaving to reach a final product that is remarkable in detail and construction. Many cultures produced tapestries that have survived, specifically Coptic Egypt, Pre-Conquest Peru, and Northern Europe. European tapestries created between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries are grand and elaborate decorative pieces commissioned by the nobility of the time period as status symbols and functional portable art. These massive textiles were very labor intensive and the most famous tapestry sets took a year or more to complete. The textile art of tapestry weaving is a concept not covered in detail during the courses I have taken toward my degree in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design. Thus, I proposed to study the history, conservation, and creation of tapestries with a focus on European tapestries. In this project I set out to take an in depth look at European tapestries, learning the materials and processes used to create them and the historical significance of the imagery they display. I gathered information through researching tapestry from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo time periods. I examined the tapestry fragment that the URI TMD department has in its collection and was able to identify the weaving techniques I had learned about through my library research. I traveled to New York City and visited The Cloisters Museum to get an “up close and personal” look at some of the most famous tapestries that I had researched. I also met with a URI graduate, a textile conservator at the Isabella Gardner Museum and learned about the techniques used to preserve tapestries. The final piece of my project is implementing all that I have learned by creating my own tapestry piece. After much research into the historical and technical background of European tapestries and having the opportunity to examine these textiles first hand, I was able to apply all that I had learned and take a design from cartoon to a finished tapestry piece. I have been able to get a full understanding of the weaving process by executing the techniques in my own small tapestry creation

Esse artigo examina as chamadas “funções” das indicações formais heideggerianas, tal como desenvolvidas pelo filósofo nos anos 20. Primeiramente, é apresentado o modo como a função proibitivo-referencial e a função reversivo-transformacional desempenham um papel fundamental no projeto elaborado por Heidegger nesse período. A seguir, são analisadas suas implicações filosóficas, como a modificação da concepção tradicional de fenomenologia e sua aproximação do aspecto existencial da atividade filosófica

Heidegger e a transformação da fenomenologia: a aproximação da hermenêutica e o afastamento de Husserl

Neste artigo analisamos a transformação da fenomenologia, realizada por Heidegger a partir da inserção de elementos próprios da hermenêutica. Para tanto, procuramos mostrar o modo como o filósofo relaciona a fenomenologia com noções como facticidade e ontologia, desse modo se afastando radicalmente da concepção pregada por Husserl – sobretudo quanto ao tipo de cientificidade que esse último defende ser possível para a filosofia

O CARÁTER ANTROPOCÊNTRICO DO CONCEITO HEIDEGGERIANO DE ANIMALIDADE: UMA CRÍTICA A PARTIR DE DERRIDA

O presente trabalho procura analisar o conceito de animalidade empregado por Heidegger em sua obra Os Conceitos Fundamentais da Metafísica, com o objetivo de examinar os pressupostos antropocêntricos que estariam por trás de sua investigação. Para tanto, partimos de uma breve consideração sobre o procedimento metodológico por ele empregado, o qual permitiria ao filósofo manter uma série de concepções prévias tomadas sem maiores esclarecimentos. Em seguida, analisamos a crítica segundo a qual Heidegger manteria um antropocentrismo típico da tradição filosófica, não tendo sido capaz de avançar nesse aspecto em relação aos filósofos que o precederam. Por fim, investigamos a crítica de Derrida, exposta em sua obra De l'esprit, a partir da qual podemos extrair as possíveis consequências que tal antropocentrismo acarreta para a filosofia heideggeriana

IN DEFENSE OF FEMINIST PHENOMENOLOGY: LIVED BODY, FACTICITY AND THE PROBLEM OF ESSENTIALISM

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the main themes and concepts cultivated in the intersection between phenomenology and feminism, as well as to introduce some of the authors whose research has impacted the field. To that effect, I first analyze the seminal works which helped consolidate the discipline that would come to be known as “feminist phenomenology”, focusing next on relevant notions to the topic at hand, such as the concepts of lived body and facticity. In doing so, I intend to show that, even though phenomenology itself may have been charged with engendering essentialist arguments, the possibility of further non-essentialist unfolding within a phenomenological framework can contribute a great deal to the solution to a number of laborious, yet central deadlocks currently plaguing feminism as a theory as much as a political movement

Sobre a pertinência do feminismo para a investigação filosófica: respostas a Susan Haack

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar as críticas de Susan Haack à filosofia feminista e algumas respostas a essas críticas, incluindo a minha. Para tanto, primeiro ofereço um panorama da filosofia de Haack seguido de um recorte: analiso seus posicionamentos específicos com relação à epistemologia feminista e exponho as principais reações a tais posicionamentos. Em um segundo momento, ofereço uma resposta alternativa a Haack desde o ponto de vista da história feminista da filosofia. Ao focar especialmente na recuperação e possibilidade de canonização das mulheres filósofas, defendo que a investigação em história da filosofia, tal como engendrada pelo feminismo, tem como resultado o oposto do que Haack suspeita: trata-se de em uma investigação que preza pela verdade, democrática, honesta, e não se reduz à promoção parcial de interesses e justiça social. A redescoberta de obras de mulheres ao longo da história da filosofia e a subsequente possibilidade de sua inclusão no cânone proporcionam um conhecimento mais fidedigno da própria história da disciplina – o que atesta a pertinência da empreitada em si mesma, bem como de sua participação no rol das respostas a Haack. O artigo conclui com a apresentação de alguns casos de filósofas em processo de recuperação e canonização

Adaptação e coadaptação de genes relacionados com pigmentação de pele e vitamina D em populações nativas americanas

A adaptação humana à radiação ocorre, basicamente, pela seleção em genes relacionados à vitamina D e à pigmentação de pele. O objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar se há sinal de que um conjunto pré-selecionado de genes e variantes comuns nessas duas vias estão coevoluindo em populações nativas americanos que habitam diferentes regiões e que têm distintos hábitos de subsistência e dieta. Então podemos sugerir que, se as populações autóctones americanas estiverem adaptadas a seus respectivos contextos geográficos/ecológicos/culturais, é possível que apresentem distribuição alélica diferencial nesses loci. Para testar a hipótese acima, utilizamos dados de varredura genômica, pré-selecionando SNPs de 16 genes (8 relacionados a vitamina D e 8 a pigmentação) em 333 indivíduos de 33 populações nativas. Com objetivo de testar coadaptação, aplicamos um método de redes que mede interação por meio de um cálculo de desequilíbrio de ligação. Comparamos as frequências alélicas, bem como a frequência de indivíduos com as interações alélicas, entre as categorias populacionais relacionadas à incidência de radiação (altas altitudes vs baixas altitudes e altas latitudes vs baixas latitudes) e a potencial variação da disponibilidade de vitamina D na dieta (agriculturalistas vs caçadores-coletores). Aplicando o teste exato de Fisher com correção FDR, encontramos diferenças estatisticamente significativas em diversos SNPs, bem como em combinações alélicas que sugerem interação. (Continuação ) Alguns achados merecem destaque. Por exemplo, entre as categorias altas latitudes e baixas latitudes, detectamos uma variante no gene CYP2R1 (alelo A do rs2060793), que confere mais eficiência à enzima codificada por ele, mais frequente em indivíduos de altas latitudes (e baixa incidência de UV). A maior frequência desse alelo pode ter sido favorecida pela seleção natural devido a necessidade aumentada da eficiência no metabolismo da vitamina D nesse ambiente com menos disponibilidade da vitamina. Em relação à comparação entre as categorias altas e baixas altitudes foi encontrada em maior frequência a ligação entre alelos potencialmente 9 funcionais dos genes CYP24A1 e VDR (alelo C do rs2248359 e alelo G do rs11574143, respectivamente) nas terras altas, o que pode ter sido resultado do relaxamento da pressão de seleção para eficiência no metabolismo desse hormônio em ambientes com alta incidência de radiação UV em populações com a pele relativamente clara. No que diz respeito às diferenças nas práticas de subsistência e hábitos de dieta, um alelo (A do rs4516035) relacionado a maior atividade do VDR pode ter sido selecionado em agriculturalistas para compensar a menor disponibilidade dessa vitamina na alimentação deles. Além disso, identificamos alelos (rs3740164/C e rs750358/T) de diferentes genes (CUBN e OCA2, respectivamente) pertencentes a vias distintas (metabolismo da vitamina D e rota da pigmentação) que podem estar sendo segregados juntos em populações nativas que praticam agricultura por favorecerem adaptativamente os indivíduos nesse contexto em particular.The human adaptation to UV radiation occurs, basically, by selection in genes related to vitamin D and skin pigmentation. The objective of this work is to evaluate if there is a signal that a pre-selected set of genes and common variants in these two pathways are co-evolving in Native American populations that inhabit different regions and that have distinct habits of subsistence and diet. Thus, we can suggest that if Native American populations are adapted to their respective geographic/ecological/cultural contexts, they may have differential allelic distribution at these loci. To test the hypothesis above, we used genomic scanning data, pre-selecting SNPs from 17 genes (8 related to vitamin D and 9 to pigmentation) in 333 individuals from 33 Native American populations. In order to test co-adaptation, we applied a method of networks that measures interaction using linkage disequilibrium (LD) approaches. We compared allele frequencies as well as the frequency their interactions, considering population categories related to UV radiation (high altitudes vs low altitudes and high latitudes vs low latitudes), as well as the potential variation of vitamin D availability in the diet (agriculturalists vs hunter-gatherers). Applying the Fisher exact test with FDR correction, we found statistically significant differences in several SNPs, as well as in allelic combinations, suggesting interaction. Some findings deserve attention. For example, among the high latitudes and low latitudes categories, we detected a variant in the CYP2R1 gene (allele A of rs2060793), which gives more efficiency to the enzyme encoded by it, more frequent in individuals of high latitudes (and low incidence of UV). The higher frequency of this allele may have been favored by natural selection because of the increased need for vitamin D metabolism efficiency in this environment with less vitamin availability. Regarding the comparison between the high and low altitudes categories, the interaction between potentially functional alleles of the genes CYP24A1 and VDR (rs2248359 C allele and G allele of rs11574143, respectively) was found to be more frequent in high altitudes populations, which 11 may have resulted from the relaxation of the selection pressure for efficiency in the metabolism of this hormone in environments with high incidence of UV radiation in populations with relatively clear skin. Concerning differences in subsistence practices and dietary habits, an allele (A of rs4516035) related to increased VDR activity may have been selected in agriculturalists to compensate for the lower availability of this vitamin in their foods. In addition, we identified alleles (rs3740164 / C and rs750358 / T) from different genes (CUBN and OCA2, respectively) belonging to distinct pathways (vitamin D metabolism and route of pigmentation) that may be segregating together in agriculturalists, favoring adaptatively individuals from that context

Itinerary for deconstruction of the forensic psychiatric institute of Rio Grande do Sul

Este estudo tem como objetivo descrever a experiência das reformas psiquiátricas, as medidas de humanização e as medidas de desospitalização. A primeira reforma psiquiátrica nasceu da ideia de recuperação pelo trabalho. Mas com o passar do tempo, estas colônias se mostraram iguais aos asilos tradicionais. Do modo como o Código Penal brasileiro disciplina o assunto é muito fácil a violação do princípio da proporcionalidade na medida em que o autor de um furto e de lesões corporais, p. ex., pode ficar privado de sua liberdade (ou ter sua liberdade restringida) por tempo igual ou superior ao autor de um homicídio, de um roubo ou de um estupro. Na medida em que fui decretando as extinções das medidas de segurança percebi que, por seu grande número, não podia deixar a cargo somente do Instituto Psiquiátrico Forense as desinstitucionalizações. Assim, foi oficiadoàs autoridades para receber os pacientes do Instituto Psiquiátrico Forense do Estado. Cabe aos magistrados, convocar o direito a ser, como categoria ética e não apenas como categoria científica, como a salvaguarda dos outros contra minhas possíveis deserções, sendo que a magistratura não deve e não pode sacrificar o Direito no altar do Poder e Estado.This study aims to describe the experience of psychiatric reforms, measures of humanization and measures of deinstitutionalization. The first psychiatric reform was the idea of the recovery throutgh work. But over time, these colonies showed the same as traditional asylums. The way the Brazilian Penal Code regulates the subject is very easy to violate the principle of proportionality in that the perpetrator of a robbery and bodily injury, for example, may be deprived of his/her liberty (or have his freedom restricted) for an equal or greater sentence than the author of a murder, a robbery or a rape. To the extent I was enacting the extinctions of the security measures I realized that, by their large numbers could not be borne only of the Forensic Psychiatric Institute. I decided to request officially the authorities to receive patients from the Forensic Psychiatric Institute of the State. Officers of the Governor, the Human Rights Commissions of the Legislative Assembly and OAB / RS, the health authority and state and municipal prosecutor for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship prosecutors, etc. Finally, I leave one last message. Especially, we judges, shall call a right to be as ethical category and not just scientific category, the true and beautiful words of BALLESTEROS "the protection of others against my possible defections" and, as highlighted by this author, now in this true and beautiful words, the judiciary should not and cannot sacrifice the law on the altar of power and state
