How does prior knowledge affect children's memory and suggestibility?

In this review chapter, we analyzed various studies focused on the effect of prior knowledge on children’s memory and suggestibility. Specifically, three types of knowledge are considered: social knowledge, script knowledge and semantic knowledge. Social knowledge benefits memory when the actions performed by another person fit into children’s knowledge, but it is also probably that children accept false suggestions consistent with that knowledge. Script knowledge is only beneficial for memory when the repeated event occurs always in the same way, but when some details change across repetitions, children could become confused and not be able to distinguish the particular detail in each repetition of the event. Semantic knowledge benefits episodic memory and makes more probably to reject false suggestions, unless the suggestion were repeated many times, in this case the beneficial effect of semantic knowledge disappears. Findings from studies are extrapolated to the forensic field, and limitations of the studies analyzed are discusse

Effects of divided attention and cued recall test on true and illusory memories in the DRM paradigm

In this study, we were interested in examining how the reduction of attentional resources during the encoding of word lists and the type of recall test affected true and false memories in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm (DRM paradigm). Three DRM lists were presented visually under full attention conditions or while participants had to monitor a concurrent auditory task of letters and digits. After the presentation of each list, participants completed a free recall test or a cued recall test. Divided attention had an opposite effect on correct recall of studied words and false recall of critical words. Thus, the concurrent task caused a reduction in correct recall, but increased false recall. The retrieval cue did not affect the correct recall of studied words, but it was helpful in reducing the false recall of critical words and other intrusions. The results are discussed taking into account the theoretical proposals of the activation monitoring account and fuzzy trace theoryThis work was supported by the transfer knowledge Project 088501 – FUAM (Foundation of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) co-directed by the first and second author

How chronological age, theory of mind, and yield are interrelated to memory and suggestion in young children

We investigated the interrelations between chronological age, theory of mind (ToM), Yield (as a measure of individual suggestibility), memory and acceptance of experimental suggestion in a sample of children between 3 and 7 years old (N = 106). One week after participants interacted with ‘a Teacher’, they were asked to recall activities carried out with the Teacher (direct experience) and the contents of a story read to them by the Teacher (indirect experience). Data were examined with an analysis of developmental trajectories, which allows establishing the predictor value of socio-cognitive developmental factors regardless of participants’ chronological age. It also estimates predictor values in interaction with the age and determines whether age is the best predictor for performance. As in previous research, results showed that chronological age was the main predictor of memory performance, both for direct experience (i.e., activities performed) and indirect experience (i.e., contents of the story). However, ToM and Yield, together with participants’ ages, modulated their acceptance of the external suggestions received (presented only once, one week after the event). A turning point was observed at age 4.6. Below this age, the greater the mentalist skills (higher ToM), the lower was the vulnerability to external suggestion. Still, children below this age characterized individually as being suggestible (Yield medium or high) were more vulnerable to suggestion the younger they were. Thus, developmental socio-cognitive factors might modulate young children’s vulnerability to external suggestions, even if received only onceThis work was supported by the Transfer Knowledge Project 088501–FUAM (Foundation of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) co-directed by the first and third authors, and the National Research SEJ2004–07655 financed by Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica (DGICYT

Multi-Proxy Approach for Identifying Heinrich Events in Sediment Cores from Hatton Bank (NE Atlantic Ocean)

    Get PDF
A series of six gravity cores has been used to reconstruct the depositional history of Hatton Bank (Rockall Plateau, NE Atlantic Ocean). The cores have been studied for magnetic susceptibility (MS), geochemical composition, grain size distribution, and a semi-quantitative foraminiferal association. Two main interbedded facies have been described: (i) calcareous ooze; and (ii) lithogenous silt. The study reveals prominent peaks from the MS signal, silt, Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca, Al/Ca, and Rare Earth Elements normalised by Continental Crust (REE/CC), which are sensitive indicators for Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5) and ash layers. These peaks may relate to alternations in dominance of the calcareous and lithogenic facies. The sediment displays a high percentage of carbonate in interglacial layers but is lithogenic-dominated in glacial stages. The layers with prominent lithic-rich and foraminifera-poor sediments (established as Heinrich layers) may be related to a possible palaeoclimatic effect, where freshwater discharged during iceberg melting may have reduced the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). In the study area, the mean sedimentation rates for the last glacial as ~4.2 cm ka−1 and ~1.4 cm ka−1 for the last ~18 ka (interglacial period) have been estimated. Besides this evidence, Fe/Ca and MS peaks may reflect the presence of basalt, either introduced through ice-rafting or transported and redistributed by bottom currents in the study area. Certain indices, including MS and Fe/Ca, are proposed as good proxies for detecting Heinrich events and ash layers in the Hatton Bank sediments and, in consequence, are parameters that can be used to infer strengthened/weakened NADW formation, according to stadials/interstadials. Moreover, we suggest that the northernmost boundary of the area with evidence of Heinrich events may be situated around 57°38′ N in the Hatton–Rockall area, at least for H4, based on the variation of the Mg/Ca and Fe/Ca curves

Occurrence and Effects of Antimicrobials Drugs in Aquatic Ecosystems

    Get PDF
Currently, thanks to the development of sensitive analytical techniques, the presence of different emerging pollutants in aquatic ecosystems has been evidenced; however, most of them have not been submitted to any regulation so far. Among emerging contaminants, antimicrobials have received particular attention in recent decades, mainly due to the concerning development of antibiotic resistance observed in bacteria, but little is known about the toxicological and ecological impact that antimicrobials can have on aquatic ecosystems. Their high consumption in human and veterinary medicine, food-producing animals and aquaculture, as well as persistence and poor absorption have caused antimicrobials to be discharged into receiving waters, with or without prior treatment, where they have been detected at ng-mg L-1 levels with the potential to cause effects on the various organisms living within aquatic systems. This review presents the current knowledge on the occurrence of antimicrobials in aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing their occurrence in different environmental matrixes and the effects on aquatic organisms (cyanobacteria, microalgae, invertebrates and vertebrates)

Sulisobenzone (BP-4) is one of the benzophenone type UVfiltersmost frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems. As a suspected endocrine disrupting compound, scarce information is available yet about other molecular effects and its mechanismof action. Here, we used an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic approach to improve the current understanding on the toxicity of BP-4 towards aquatic species. Gilt-head sea bream individualswere exposed at environmentally relevant concentrations (10 μg L-1) for 22 days. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 371 differentially expressed genes in liver while metabolomic analysis identified 123 differentially modulated features in plasma and 118 in liver. Integration of transcriptomic and metabolomic data showed disruption of the energy metabolism(>10 pathways related to the metabolismof amino acids and carbohydrateswere impacted) and lipid metabolism (5 glycerophospholipids and the expression of 3 enzymes were affected), suggesting oxidative stress. We also observed, for the first time in vivo and at environmental relevant concentrations, the disruption of several enzymes involved in the steroid and thyroid hormones biosynthesis. DNA and RNA synthesis was also impacted by changes in the purine and pyrimidine metabolisms. Overall, the multiomic workflow presented here increases the evidence on suspected effects of BP-4 exposure and identifies additional modes of action of the compounds that could have been overlooked by using single omic approaches. ©2021 The Authors.
