APPLICATION OF MIND MAP IN TEACHING GEOMETRY IN GRADE 4

Get PDF
When it comes to mathematics education and learning, mind maps are a graphical representation of ideas and concepts widely used. A mind map can significantly improve student learning and teacher teaching activities by its unique structure and characteristics. This study demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating a mind map into the geometry curriculum for fourth-grade students. The findings of an experiment conducted on 44 primary students demonstrate that, with the teacher's guidance, most students can create an appropriate mind map to review a lesson and that the mind map contributes to increasing students' learning motivation and subject interests. Several students responded positively to a survey about their attitudes toward using mind maps in mathematics learning, which revealed that they have favorable attitudes toward using mind maps. Article visualizations

Get PDF
Surface plasmon resonance has attracted more and more attention thanks to its wide range of applications in numerous fields (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.). In this chapter, we present different aspects, from theoretical calculation and experimental fabrication to applications demonstration, related to arbitrary shape plasmonic nanostructures. First, numerical calculations based on finite-difference time-domain method were realized to investigate the plasmonic properties of gold nanostructures having various size and shapes. Then the direct laser writing method was demonstrated as an excellent tool for fabrication on demand of arbitrary nanostructures. Plasmonic structures were obtained indirectly by a standard lift-off method from a polymeric template and directly by tightly focusing a continuous-wave laser beam onto a metallic thin film. Finally, demonstration of various applications of fabricated plasmonic structures, namely plasmonic-based data storage, color nanoprinter, tunable filters, and plasmonic-magneto-optics sensors will be shown

Introduction: Quantifying serum free light-chain is a valuable test to determine the risk at the time of diagnosis, assess the response to treatment, and monitor the recurrence of multiple myeloma. Objective: To investigate the characteristics of serum free light-chain concentration and its relationship with some clinical and subclinical characteristics in patients with multiple myeloma. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective, non-controlled study was conducted, in 74 patients with multiple myeloma. All patients were completed with quantitative tests serum free light-chain Îș, and serum free light-chain λ. Results: Intact immunoglobulin multiple myeloma accounted for most patients (81%). Most patients had abnormal serum free light-chain at the time of diagnosis (98.6%). High serum free light-chain concentration was correlated with M protein concentration > 3 g/dL (p< 0.05) and there was no statistically significant correlation between high serum free light-chain and other clinical and subclinical features. Conclusion: Most patients with multiple myeloma have an elevated serum free light-chain at admission time. Correlation of high serum free light-chain with increased serum M protein was noted

The results also showed that 71.9% of samples were contaminated with mycotoxins, and 14.28% of samples exceeded the maximum allowable limit. Conclusion: The concentration of aflatoxin B1 in 14.28% of the samples are over permissible limits by nationwide regulations

Epitaxial ferroelectric oxides on silicon with perspectives for future device applications

Get PDF
Functional oxides on silicon have been the subject of in-depth research for more than 20 years. Much of this research has been focused on the quality of the integration of materials due to their intrinsic thermodynamic incompatibility, which has hindered the flourishing of the field of research. Nevertheless, growth of epitaxial transition metal oxides on silicon with a sharp interface has been achieved by elaborated kinetically controlled sequential deposition while the crystalline quality of different functional oxides has been considerably improved. In this Research Update, we focus on three applications in which epitaxial ferroelectric oxides on silicon are at the forefront, and in each of these applications, other aspects of the integration of materials play an important role. These are the fields of piezoelectric microelectromechanical system devices, electro-optical components, and catalysis. The overview is supported by a brief analysis of the synthesis processes that enable epitaxial growth of oxides on silicon. This Research Update concludes with a theoretical description of the interfaces and the possibility of manipulating their electronic structure to achieve the desired coupling between (ferroelectric) oxides and semiconductors, which opens up a remarkable perspective for many advanced applications. © 2021 Author(s)

Safety and efficacy of fluoxetine on functional outcome after acute stroke (AFFINITY): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Get PDF
Background Trials of fluoxetine for recovery after stroke report conflicting results. The Assessment oF FluoxetINe In sTroke recoverY (AFFINITY) trial aimed to show if daily oral fluoxetine for 6 months after stroke improves functional outcome in an ethnically diverse population. Methods AFFINITY was a randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 43 hospital stroke units in Australia (n=29), New Zealand (four), and Vietnam (ten). Eligible patients were adults (aged ≄18 years) with a clinical diagnosis of acute stroke in the previous 2–15 days, brain imaging consistent with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and a persisting neurological deficit that produced a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 1 or more. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 via a web-based system using a minimisation algorithm to once daily, oral fluoxetine 20 mg capsules or matching placebo for 6 months. Patients, carers, investigators, and outcome assessors were masked to the treatment allocation. The primary outcome was functional status, measured by the mRS, at 6 months. The primary analysis was an ordinal logistic regression of the mRS at 6 months, adjusted for minimisation variables. Primary and safety analyses were done according to the patient's treatment allocation. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12611000774921. Findings Between Jan 11, 2013, and June 30, 2019, 1280 patients were recruited in Australia (n=532), New Zealand (n=42), and Vietnam (n=706), of whom 642 were randomly assigned to fluoxetine and 638 were randomly assigned to placebo. Mean duration of trial treatment was 167 days (SD 48·1). At 6 months, mRS data were available in 624 (97%) patients in the fluoxetine group and 632 (99%) in the placebo group. The distribution of mRS categories was similar in the fluoxetine and placebo groups (adjusted common odds ratio 0·94, 95% CI 0·76–1·15; p=0·53). Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the fluoxetine group had more falls (20 [3%] vs seven [1%]; p=0·018), bone fractures (19 [3%] vs six [1%]; p=0·014), and epileptic seizures (ten [2%] vs two [<1%]; p=0·038) at 6 months. Interpretation Oral fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months after acute stroke did not improve functional outcome and increased the risk of falls, bone fractures, and epileptic seizures. These results do not support the use of fluoxetine to improve functional outcome after stroke

Exploring characteristics of the corner sections of a domain wall trap nanostructure with the two-field direction method

A 2D polycrystalline permalloy domain wall trap nanostructure with a thickness of 20 nm was studied. The structure was alternatively designed and patterned using QCAD/L-Edit software and focused-ion beam technique. With this design, a magnetic domain wall can be created and propagated with a sequence of two-field directions in a Lorentz microscopy. The trap consists of two horizontal nanowires and three 90°-tilted ones. Each nanowire has an in-plane dimension of 200 × 1000 nm(2). The trap corners were curved to allow a created domain wall that easily moves through the structure. A head-to-head domain-wall aims to create using a continuous field, this created wall can be propagated in the trap using a sequence of two-field directions. The designed trap was simulated using the Object Oriented Micro-Magnetic Framework software. Lorentz microscopy and simulation results indicate that the propagation of a domain wall is strongly affected by the precise roughness behavior of the trap elements. Domain wall pinning and transformation of wall chirality are sensitively correlated to the corner sections of the trap structure and field directions at a certain regime. Using the two-field direction method enables us to explore characteristics of the corner sections of the patterned trap nanostructure. This study is vital to fabricate an optimal nano-trap which supports a reproducible domain wall motion. This also suggests a useful method for the domain wall propagation using sequences of two-field directions. This work provides a better understanding of wall creation and propagation in polycrystalline permalloy curved nanowires which are of interest for concepts of nonvolatile data storage devices

No full text
Primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) is common in children, affecting the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. This study aimed to investigate the percentage of dental caries, gingivitis, hypertrophic gingivitis, and developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in children with PNS. The association of PNS with these diseases and oral care behavior was also assessed. A total of 407 children with PNS and 407 age- and gender-matched controls were recruited. PNS was diagnosed based on blood and urinary tests. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), the Gingival Index (GI), the Gingival Overgrowth Index (GOI), the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth Index (dmft/DMFT), and DDE were collected. The PNS patients showed significantly higher scores of OHI-S, GI, and dmft, and higher proportions of dental caries and DDE than those of the controls (p < 0.001). It is necessary to establish a periodic dental protocol for PNS patients to improve their oral health status

International audienceThe rapidly developing urbanization since the last decade of the 20th century leads to the strong groundwater extraction, resulting in the subsidence phenomena in the Hanoi, Vietnam. Recent advances in the multi-temporal spaceborne SAR interferometry, especially with Persistent Scatters Interferometry (PSI) approach, is the robust remote sensing technique for measuring ground subsidence in large scale with millimetric accuracy. This work has presented an advanced PSI analysis, to provide unprecedented spatial extent and continuous temporal coverage of the subsidence in Hanoi City. The correlation between the reference leveling velocity and the estimated PSI result is R2=0.86, and the root mean square error is 4.0 (mm/year), confirming their good agreement. The study shows that subsidence is most severe in the Haihung silt loam areas in the south of the city. The groundwater extraction resulting from urbanization and urban growth is mainly responsible for the subsidence

No full text
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and low bone mass, caused mainly by mutations in collagen type I encoding genes. The current study aimed to evaluate dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI), oral manifestations and caries status of OI children. Sixty-eight children (41 males, 27 females) aged from 3 to 17 years old (mean 9 ± 4.13) participated in the study. Participants were classified into three OI type groups (I—2 cases, III—31 cases and IV—35 cases). Clinical examination and an orthopantomogram were used to obtain prevalences and associations of DI, caries status, malocclusion, crossbite, open bite, eruption, impaction and missing teeth with OI. The prevalence of DI among OI patients was 47.1%, more common in OI type III than type IV. The yellow-brown discoloration type was more vulnerable to attrition than the opalescent-grey one in the primary dentition. OI seemed not to have a high risk of caries; the prevalence of caries was 69.1%. A high incidence of malocclusion, crossbite and open bite was observed. In-depth oral information would provide valuable data for better dental management in OI patients. Parents and general doctors should pay more attention to dental care to prevent caries and premature tooth loss
