Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown in Eating Disorders: A Multicentre Collaborative International Study

Background. The COVID-19 lockdown has had a significant impact on mental health. Patients with eating disorders (ED) have been particularly vulnerable. Aims. (1) To explore changes in eating-related symptoms and general psychopathology during lockdown in patients with an ED from various European and Asian countries; and (2) to assess differences related to diagnostic ED subtypes, age, and geography. Methods. The sample comprised 829 participants, diagnosed with an ED according to DSM-5 criteria from specialized ED units in Europe and Asia. Participants were assessed using the COVID-19 Isolation Scale (CIES). Results. Patients with binge eating disorder (BED) experienced the highest impact on weight and ED symptoms in comparison with other ED subtypes during lockdown, whereas individuals with other specified feeding and eating disorders (OFSED) had greater deterioration in general psychological functioning than subjects with other ED subtypes. Finally, Asian and younger individuals appeared to be more resilient. Conclusions. The psychopathological changes in ED patients during the COVID-19 lockdown varied by cultural context and individual variation in age and ED diagnosis. Clinical services may need to target preventive measures and adapt therapeutic approaches for the most vulnerable patients

EFFECT OF TRAHEOSTOMY ON THE INPATIENT TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH CONTACT MEDIASTINITES

The aim was to assess the impact of emergency and planned tracheostomy on the main indicators of inpatient treatment in patients with contact mediastinitis.Materials and methods. This work was performed on the basis of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Kursk Regional Clinical Hospital. In order to conduct a comparative assessment of the treatment results, the patients with contact mediastinitis (46 people, surveyed period 2008–2017) were divided into 2 subgroups: control (25 people, 7 women, 18 men), who were treated without a tracheostomy; and the main group (21 people: 9 women, 12 men), with tracheostomy performed. The etiological and microbiological characteristics of the disease, the total duration of inpatient treatment, the length of stay in the resuscitation and intensive care units (bed-days), the dependence of the disease outcome (death, recovery) on the form of surgical intervention (tracheostomy) were evaluated.Results. A statistically significant effect of tracheostomy on the total duration of hospitalization and mortality rate was established (p0.05). Consequently, at present this issue cannot be resolved unambiguously and requires further research and mathematical analysis.Conclusion. The implementation of tracheostomy significantly increases the duration of inpatient treatment of patients with contact odontogenic mediastinites (p0.05).Conflict of interest: the authors declare no conflict of interest

Contrast saturation resonances in the absorption band of rubidium molecules

We study Doppler-free saturation resonances in the absorption band of rubidium diatomic molecules in the frequency range near the D2 line of lithium atoms (671 nm). We observe contrast saturation resonances and record a variation in the laser light transmission of 4% due to optical saturation. The large optical nonlinearities in the molecular diatomic gas can be used for investigating the four-wave mixing and other nonlinear effects

Electrical Resistance Preheating of High-Amperage Cells

At present, there is no single opinion on which cell preheating method is best. In most cases, such a method (that is to be chosen for a smelter) is chosen based on a number of objective and subjective factors. It is often when a method is chosen that power expenses (either electricity or power generated from fuel combustion) for such a method are not taken into account. However, it can play a crucial role for different regions and influence the production cost of Al. This paper discusses the results of testing the method of electrical preheating in a pilot cell area (RA-400 cells) at OJSC RUSAL Sayanogors

Wearable Light-and-Motion Dataloggers for Sleep/Wake Research: A Review

Long-term recording of a person’s activity (actimetry or actigraphy) using devices typically worn on the wrist is increasingly applied in sleep/wake, chronobiological, and clinical research to estimate parameters of sleep and sleep-wake cycles. With the recognition of the importance of light in influencing these parameters and with the development of technological capabilities, light sensors have been introduced into devices to correlate physiological and environmental changes. Over the past two decades, many such new devices have appeared from different manufacturers. One of the aims of this review is to help researchers and clinicians choose the data logger that best fits their research goals. Seventeen currently available light-and-motion recorders entered the analysis. They were reviewed for appearance, dimensions, weight, mounting, battery, sensors, features, communication interface, and software. We found that all devices differed from each other in several features. In particular, six devices are equipped with a light sensor that can measure blue light. It is noteworthy that blue light most profoundly influences the physiology and behavior of mammals. As the wearables market is growing rapidly, this review helps guide future developments and needs to be updated every few years
