Credit scoring: comparison of non‐parametric techniques against logistic regression
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceOver the past decades, financial institutions have been giving increased importance to credit risk
management as a critical tool to control their profitability. More than ever, it became crucial for
these institutions to be able to well discriminate between good and bad clients for only
accepting the credit applications that are not likely to default. To calculate the probability of
default of a particular client, most financial institutions have credit scoring models based on
parametric techniques. Logistic regression is the current industry standard technique in credit
scoring models, and it is one of the techniques under study in this dissertation. Although it is
regarded as a robust and intuitive technique, it is still not free from several critics towards the
model assumptions it takes that can compromise its predictions. This dissertation intends to
evaluate the gains in performance resulting from using more modern non-parametric
techniques instead of logistic regression, performing a model comparison over four different
real-life credit datasets. Specifically, the techniques compared against logistic regression in this
study consist of two single classifiers (decision tree and SVM with RBF kernel) and two ensemble
methods (random forest and stacking with cross-validation). The literature review demonstrates
that heterogeneous ensemble approaches have a weaker presence in credit scoring studies and,
because of that, stacking with cross-validation was considered in this study. The results
demonstrate that logistic regression outperforms the decision tree classifier, has similar
performance in relation to SVM and slightly underperforms both ensemble approaches in similar
extents
The effects of strength and conditioning training programs in age group swimmers
The ability to apply force is crucial in competitive swimming, particularly in short distances.
Accordingly, literature has shown that high values of upper-body strength and power are
determinant to succeed in competitive swimming. Thus, dry-land Strength and Conditioning
(S&C) is a common practice in swimming prescription in order to improve performance or
prevent injuries. Nevertheless, research over the effects of S&C training in swimming
performance is scarce and far from consensus. The main purpose of this thesis was to analyze
the effect of S&C training programs on swimming performance in age group swimmers.
Additionally, the reliability of tethered swimming evaluation with age group swimmers was
verified, as a methodology to evaluate S&C training effects in swimming performance. For the
accomplishment of these purposes the following sequence was used: (i) reviewing the available
literature; (ii) examination of the reliability of tethered swimming evaluation; (iii) analyzing
the effects of S&C programs in dry-land strength and swimming performance; (iv) proposing a
practical S&C program to swimming prescription. The main conclusions drawn were: (i) there
is limited research on S&C training effects in competitive swimming and the existent was mainly
conducted with older and experienced swimmers; (ii) tethered swimming is a reliable test to
evaluate force exerted in water by swimmers familiarized with the test; (iii) tethered swimming
evaluations throughout the season may allow coaches to control swimmers’ ability to exert inwater
force and evaluate the effects of S&C training programs, in age group swimmers; (iv) 6
weeks of a complementary S&C training allow improvements in dry-land strength, in age group
swimmers; (v) a 4-week adaptation period is suggested to allow transferability of S&C
improvements to swimming performance; (vi) explosiveness should be the goal of S&C training
in order to allow swimming performance enhancement in short distance swimming, with age
group swimmers. These findings can be used by coaches and researches as a starting point to
future S&C training programs in age group swimmers. A
PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of vascular endothelial growth factor-specific (VEGF) monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that does not extend beneath the foveal center (nonsubfoveal CNV). METHODS: The study design was a retrospective chart review of consecutive patients over a two-month period under active treatment with bevacizumab and/or ranibizumab for neovascular AMD. Patients with neovascularization within the macula that did not extend beneath the center of the foveal avascular zone, along with at least one large drusen (>125 µ) or many intermediate size (63-124 µ) drusen were included. Best corrected Snellen visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) analysis of the central macular thickness was recorded for each visit. Serial injections of bevacizumab and/or ranibizumab were administered until there was resolution of subretinal fluid clinically or by OCT. Data over the entire follow-up period were analyzed for overall visual acuity and OCT changes. All patients had follow-up since diagnosis of at least 6 months (mean=9.6 months). RESULTS: Of the thirteen included patients, eleven had reduction of retinal thickening in the area involved by the CNV. The remaining two patients did not have OCT data available but had no fluid or activity on clinical examination at last follow-up. One patient (8%) lost one line of vision; one (8%) remained stable, and eleven (84%) gained one or more lines of visual acuity. Three patients (23%) gained three or more lines. The average treatment outcome for all patients was a gain of 1.7 ± 1.3 lines of Snellen acuity. Both therapeutic agents were effective, with an average gain of 1.6 ± 0.6 lines for patients treated with bevacizumab, 1.5 ± 1.9 lines gained for patients treated with ranibizumab and 2.5 ± 0.7 lines gained in the two patients who received both agents over the course of their treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The use of intravitreal anti-VEGF agents for nonsubfoveal CNV in AMD is effective. Our results are comparable to published results from large-scale trials of anti-VEGF therapy for subfoveal CNV. Our data support the idea that bevacizumab or ranibizumab appear to be the treatment of choice for AMD patients with nonsubfoveal CNV.OBJETIVO: Investigar a eficácia dos anti-angiogênicos ranibizumab e bevacizumab injetados intravítreo, no tratamento de pacientes com neovascularização de coróide extrafoveal em degeneração macular relacionada à idade. University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology Hospitals and ClinicsFederal University of São Paulo Department of OphthalmologyUNIFESP, Department of OphthalmologySciEL
On strong mass segregation around a massive black hole: Implications for lower-frequency gravitational-wave astrophysics
We present, for the first time, a clear -body realization of the {\it
strong mass segregation} solution for the stellar distribution around a massive
black hole. We compare our -body results with those obtained by solving the
orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck (FP) equation in energy space. The -body
segregation is slightly stronger than in the FP solution, but both confirm the
{\it robustness} of the regime of strong segregation when the number fraction
of heavy stars is a (realistically) small fraction of the total population. In
view of recent observations revealing a dearth of giant stars in the sub-parsec
region of the Milky Way, we show that the time scales associated with cusp
re-growth are not longer than . These time
scales are shorter than a Hubble time for black holes masses \mbul \lesssim 4
\times 10^6 M_\odot and we conclude that quasi-steady, mass segregated,
stellar cusps may be common around MBHs in this mass range. Since EMRI rates
scale as \mbul^{-\alpha}, with \alpha \in [1\4,1], a good fraction of these
events should originate from strongly segregated stellar cusps.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ

controlo do Mediterrâneo durante a segunda guerra mundial.
Between the year 1624, when the first submersible device designed by the
dutchman Cornelius Van Drebbel dived into the Thames River, and the beginning of
World War II more than three centuries have passed. During this period countless of
changes were made in Submarine design and construction. From diesel-electric thrust to
double welded hulls, periscopes, torpedo tubes, detection and communication systems
and other innovations, led to the development of one of the most feared weapons
nowadays. These vessels played a critical role, although a less noticeable one, in the
battles that were fought for the control of the Mediterranean Sea during world war II.
Mussolini’s ambition to expand its African empire led to a three-year conflict
between Allied forces and the Axis armies. In eastern Africa, the Italians, after brief
victories, end up losing Eritrea, Abyssinia, and Somalia to the British. In northern Africa
the battles took place in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts and later, on the coasts of
Morocco, Algeria, and Tunis. These were places where everything had to be imported by
ship. That’s why it was so critical to assure the security of the naval lanes, for who did
control the sea would have the ability to lead the advance and victory ashore.
In the Mediterranean, from the attack on the French fleet in Mers-el-Kebir to the
daring airborne strike on the Italian base of Taranto by the Royal Navy, to the siege of
Malta and the frogmen missions on the Alexandria and Gibraltar harbours by the Regia
Marina, both sides tried to cripple the enemy’s military and logistic capability.
Throughout the three years of conflict the Royal Navy was more effective, even though
the balance of power swinged frequently from one side to the other, victory came after a
long and bloody war, and the submarine flotillas played a distinctive role in it.
British submarines, although by some means outdated, have favoured reliability
instead of innovation, but did excel in their missions in the Mediterranean. Between June
1940 and May 1943, they destroyed a quarter of the Italian merchant ships, or forty
percent of all the tonnage sunk by allied forces. They recoiled wounded men from Malta,
and supplied it through the Magic Carpet mission, which allowed the survival and its
recovery as a naval and aerial base and carried undercover ops. Through these multiple
tasks, British submarines played a decisive role in the allied victory, but success didn’t
come without sacrifice, until the end of 1943 forty-four out of one hundred British submarines were sunk, with one thousand nine hundred twenty-two men losing their lives
in the line of duty, an eighty-four per cent casualty ratio, one of the highest of the conflict
