open3noThe paper analyzes the seismic improvement of an historical masonry chimney by the tuned mass dumper (TMD) application. The chimney was built at the beginning of XX century in the northern region in Italy and the mechanical characteristics of the masonry, in terms of elastic modulus and compressive strength, used in the finite element models (FEMs) has been determined by a set of experimental tests. A first FEM is implemented by element beam (FEM 1) a second FEM is implemented by solid elements (FEM 2); in both, two configurations are studied: the chimney without TMD and the chimney with TMD. By a time history analysis the main characteristic of the TMD in the terms of mass, stiffness and damper values are valued and optimized for different positioning of the oscillating mass. Finally, a structural solution for the support of the TMD is proposed.Longarini, Nicola; Zucca, Marco; Migliacci, AntonioLongarini, Nicola; Zucca, Marco; Migliacci, Antoni

REDEVELOPMENT OF EXISTING BUILDINGS: THE CASE OF THE GALFA TOWER IN MILAN

A detailed structural analysis (under seismic and wind loads) of an historical tall building in Milan is carried out in this paper. Galfa tower is one of the first tall building (109 m height) built in Italy during the ‘50 years. Nowadays, it is interested by an important restoration process involving also a change in its intended use (from office to luxury hotel and residences). Several destructive, non-destructive and combined tests were performed in order to investigate the on-site characteristics of concrete. Moreover, additional mechanical and chemical tests on the steel reinforcement are performed too. Some finite elements models (FEMs) of the tower are implemented by using beam and plate elements and considering two different boundary conditions (fully constrained at foundation level and elastic soil support according to Winkler’s model). The interaction with the close existing lower buildings is considered as well. In all of the FEMS the materials characteristics are assigned on the basis of the statistical interpretation of the on-site test results. The seismic and wind loads are applied according to the Italian Design Code (NTC). The structural safety verifications are carried out in terms of shear and combined compressive-bending actions, whereas further ductility verifications are conducted considering suitable nonlinear behaviours of concrete and steel rebars

This paper is meant to deliver an overview on the damages and the following repairs of the structures of the 26th and 27th floor due to the airplane accident occurred on April, the 18th 2002. An aircraft 112 TC Commander impacted the facade of the Pirelli skyscraper getting into the building, where its gasoline tanks exploded. The first part of the paper focuses on a simplified analysis with the aims of evaluating the blast impulse and the peak pressure caused by the explosion on the floors structures. Then, a description of the realignment of the deck and the repairing operations are briefly summarized

Endothelial dysfunction in patients with spontaneous venous thromboembolism

Background and Objectives A high incidence of atherosclerotic lesions and cardiovascular events has been reported in patients with spontaneous venous thromboembolism. Endothelial dysfunction is an early marker of atherosclerosis and has predictive value for ischemic events. We have evaluated endothelial function in patients with a history of spontaneous venous thromboembolism.Design and Methods Patients with a history of symptomatic, objectively confirmed, spontaneous venous thromboembolism were included in a case-control study. Exclusion criteria were any known risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, other conditions associated with endothelial dysfunction, estro-progestinic therapy or pregnancy. Controls were age-(±5 years) and sex-matched subjects with the same exclusion criteria but without previous venous thromboembolism. Endothelial function was evaluated by the non-invasive measurement of flow-mediated vasodilation of the brachial artery and of plasma markers of endothelium activation; platelet activation parameters were also measured. Results Twenty-eight cases (8 females; mean age 59±15 years) and 28 controls (8 females; mean age 58±15) were studied. Flow-mediated vasodilation was 3.5±0.6% in cases (95% CIs: 2.2 to 4.8) and 5.7±0.6% (4.2 to 6.8) in controls (p=0.015). Brachial artery blood flow and hyperemic blood flow did not differ between the two groups. Plasma von Willebrand factor and soluble P-selectin levels were significantly higher in patients with venous thromboembolism, while plasma soluble CD40 ligand and urinary 11-dehydro-TxB2 levels were similar in cases and controls.Interpretation and Conclusions Patients with spontaneous venous thromboembolism have endothelial dysfunction, unlike age- and sex- matched controls. This finding suggests that spontaneous venous thromboembolism may be a condition associated with an enhanced risk of atherosclerosis

Periodontal pathogens are a risk factor of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, independent of tobacco and alcohol and human papillomavirus

Over the past decade, there has been a change in the epidemiology of oral cavity squamous cell cancer (OC-SCC). Many new cases of OC-SCC lack the recognized risk factors of smoking, alcohol and human papilloma virus. The aim of this study was to determine if the oral microbiome may be associated with OC-SCC in nonsmoking HPV negative patients. We compared the oral microbiome of HPV-negative nonsmoker OC-SCC(n = 18), premalignant lesions(PML) (n = 8) and normal control patients (n = 12). Their oral microbiome was sampled by oral wash and defined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We report that the periodontal pathogens Fusobacterium, Prevotella, Alloprevotella were enriched while commensal Streptococcus depleted in OC-SCC. Based on the four genera plus a marker genus Veillonella for PML, we classified the oral microbiome into two types. Gene/pathway analysis revealed a progressive increase of genes encoding HSP90 and ligands for TLRs 1, 2 and 4 along the controls→PML → OC-SCC progression sequence. Our findings suggest an association between periodontal pathogens and OC-SCC in non smoking HPV negative patients
