Studies associated with climate change and variability are of great importance at both the global and local scale in the global climate crisis. In this study, change-point detection and trend analysis were carried out on mean, maximum, minimum air temperatures and total precipitation based on monthly, seasonal and annual scale in Bartın province located in the western Black Sea Region of Turkey. For this aim, 4-different homogenei-ty tests (von Neumann test, Pettitt test, Buishand range test and standard normal homogeneity test) for change-point detection, Modified Mann–Kendall test and Şen’s innovative trend test for trend analysis, and Sen’s slope test for the magnitude estimation of trends were used. According to the test results, the summer temperatures in particular show increasing trends at the 0.001 significance level. Mean maximum temperature in August, mean minimum temperature in June and August, and mean temperature in July and August are in increasing trend at the 0.001 significance level. Over a 51 year period (1965–2015) in Bartın province, the highest rate of change per decade in air temperatures is in August (0.55°C for Tmax, 0.46°C for Tmin and 0.43°C for Tmean) based on Sen’s slope. However, the study showed that apart from October precipitation, there is no significant trend in monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation in Bartın. Increasing trends in mentioned climate variables are also visually very clear and strong in Şen’s innovative trend method, and they comply with the statistical results. As a result, the study revealed some evidence that temperatures will increase in the future in Bartın and its environs

Teacher candidates’ state of using digital educational games

The rapidly developing information technologies of our age offer new opportunities in every aspect of our lives. The use of information technologies in educational environments is an important element in creating enriched learning environments. Educational digital games used in teaching-learning environments help students to develop motivation, problem-solving, strategy development skills and creativity. The purpose of this research was to determine the teacher candidates’ state of using digital educational games. The study group of the research consisted of 4th-grade teacher candidates who are studying in the social sciences and classroom teaching departments of Süleyman Demirel University during the 2018/2019 academic year. It has been found that men teacher candidates were more positive than women teacher candidates. Teacher candidates studying social sciences were more positive than those studying classroom teaching. Although teacher candidates were concerned about using educational digital games, they were eager to use these games

Importance of Promoting Self-Regulatory Abilities in Early Childhood Period

    Get PDF
Self-regulation is defined as an individual’s self-awareness, one’s awareness about the environment and the determination of how to interact with the environment to achieve his/her own goals. Self-regulation, which has an important role in an individual’s social relations and increasing his/her quality of life, starts developing after birth. Early childhood period is a period in which children start to use their mental strategies to control their impulses, emotions, and thoughts; to behave according to social and ethical values; and to direct their own thoughts and behaviors to meet their own goals and others' expectations. All of these abilities that are targeted to be acquired in early childhood are conceptualized as self-regulatory abilities. Self-regulation is a structure that keeps a balance between socio-cultural values and individual’s needs. Self-regulation acquired in early childhood period also affects processes such as pro-social behaviors, school readiness, academic achievement and high levels of empathy. This study is a review research emphasizing the importance of self-regulatory abilities that should be promoted in early childhood period. In the study, literature is reviewed, self-regulatory abilities are defined, and suggestions are made regarding promoting children’s self-regulatory abilities in early childhood period. Drought-Forest Fire Relationships

This study was carried out to determine the methods that bear the most realistic results in predicting the number of fires and burned area under the climate conditions in future. Different indices and statistical methods were used in predicting the burned area and the number of fires. With this aim, in addition to the indices used in estimating the climate, Machine Learning and multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS) models are also used in predicting these factors. According to the results obtained in several studies, the relationship between the drought and fire indices burned area and the number of fires changes from region to region. While better results are obtained in predicting the burned area and the number of fires via the drought indices being used in this study and the MARS models that the combinations of these indices use, it is seen that a 30–39% success was achieved for predicting the amount of burned area via Machine Learning methods (Kernel Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Recursive Partitioning and Regression Trees (RPART), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and RF), and this success ranges widely from 8 to 41% in terms of the number of fires. RPART, of these four algorithms, performed the best in fire prediction, but kNN was the worst

This study aims to examine the concept of optimism in the articles published in Turkey, to identify trends and gaps in the existing literature and to provide solutions for them. In this context, examining the articles prepared on the findings related to optimism in Turkey and aimed to set out a holistic picture of the subject is synthesized. The study was prepared according to the meta-synthesis method, one of the qualitative research designs. Meta-synthesis is a research method that is used to draw a holistic conclusion from the results of the studies and try to bring a theoretical perspective by systematically combining the results and making generalizations and interpretative transformations (Polat & Ay, 2016). The sample of the study consists of 17 articles scanned in Google Scholar and www.Dergipark.gov.tr database. As a result of the study, the literature shows that there is a need for model-based studies on optimism. It reveals that the relationship between optimism and pessimism should be revealed in cognitive and behavioral dimensions. It has also been observed in the literature that there is uncertainty about whether optimism is an expectation for the future or an attitude independent of time. A similar situation can be said to be present in treating optimism as an expectation. Although optimism is regarded as a concept that can be learned in the literature, it has been observed that there are not enough studies in this direction and the educational dimension of the concept is not reflected in the articles. Finally, in this study, it is aimed to contribute to the literature by giving the basic outline of a curriculum on optimism
