Gas companies in the electricity sector in Spain and France, between late 19th Century and early 20th Century

    Get PDF
Since late-19th Century, gas companies faced the competition of electricity produced at an industrial scale. It was then necessary to think of different strategies. State governments and municipal administrations were against monopolistic property by gas companies. The latter started lawsuits to avoid the entrance of electricity companies into the energy market. They started technological innovations to improve the quality of the gas produced and to low its cost down. Moreover, advertising campaigns were designed in order to attract new clients and increase gas consume, above all in lighting. At the same time, they carried out a company concentration process, and most of them decided to participate in the electricity sector, too. That is, they tried to stop new electric companies from entering the energy market by devoting themselves to electricity production, a strategy that deserves all the attention of the historiography about the gas industry. In this paper, we aim at studying the issue for the first time in Spain and France, since the 1890s till the 1920s.II Plan Propio de Investigación, Transferencia y Divulgación Científica de la Universidad de Málaga, Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tec

e gas sector has received muchattention by economic Spanish historians, particularly the role of employers and businessmen. However, there has been a lack of attention on workers of this sector. This paper aims to fill this historiographic gap, by examining the contents of an example of labour press, La Turbina, a socialist newsletter published between 1927 and 1933. Specifically, the paper examines the main characteristics of La Turbina alongside the information provided about the Spanish Federation of the Gas, Electricity and Similar Industries Workers and its concerns. Conclusions point, firstly how weakness this socialist Federation was despite the high number of workers employed in the energy sector in Spain at that time. Secondly, its support to the Comités Paritarios and the Jurados Mixtos, and finally, the crisis suffered by the organization as a result of ith anarchists that eventually led to the end of the newsletter.

Protection of Rabbits against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus by Immunization with the VP60 Protein Expressed in Plants with a Potyvirus-Based Vector

AbstractA new plum pox potyvirus (PPV)-based vector has been constructed for the expression of full-length individual foreign proteins. The foreign sequences are cloned between the NIb replicase and capsid protein (CP) cistrons. The heterologous protein is split from the rest of the potyviral polyprotein by cleavage at the site that originally separated the NIb and CP proteins and at an additional NIa protease recognition site engineered at its amino-terminal end. This vector (PPV–NK) has been used to clone different genes, engendering stable chimeras with practical applications. We have constructed a chimera expressing high levels of jellyfish green fluorescent protein, which can be very useful for the study of PPV molecular biology. The VP60 structural protein of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) was also successfully expressed by making use of the PPV–NK vector. Inoculation of extracts from VP60-expressing plants induced a remarkable immune response against RHDV in rabbits, its natural host. Moreover, these animals were protected against a lethal challenge with RHDV

Electrical Impedance of Surface Modified Porous Titanium Implants with Femtosecond Laser

    Get PDF
The chemical composition and surface topography of titanium implants are essential to improve implant osseointegration. The present work studies a non-invasive alternative of electrical impedance spectroscopy for the characterization of the macroporosity inherent to the manufacturing process and the effect of the surface treatment with femtosecond laser of titanium discs. Osteoblasts cell culture growths on the titanium surfaces of the laser-treated discs were also studied with this method. The measurements obtained showed that the femtosecond laser treatment of the samples and cell culture produced a significant increase (around 50%) in the absolute value of the electrical impedance module, which could be characterized in a wide range of frequencies (being more relevant at 500 MHz). Results have revealed the potential of this measurement technique, in terms of advantages, in comparison to tiresome and expensive techniques, allowing semi-quantitatively relating impedance measurements to porosity content, as well as detecting the effect of surface modification, generated by laser treatment and cell culture.Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain grant PID2019-109371GB-I00Junta de Andalucía–FEDER (Spain) Project US-1259771Junta de Andalucía-Proyecto de Excelencia (Spain) P18-FR-203

Are Spanish TTOs Prepared to Innovation in a COVID Context?

The analysis of the characteristics of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) is particularly important as they constitute mediating units in the relationship between the market and university research. They are responsible for the transfer and exploitation of knowledge arising in the university context. Previous studies have been inconclusive as to the importance that the size, professionalisation or age of TTOs might have on the transfer process. However, the need to explore new markets, recognise new opportunities and identify potential customers points to the importance of TTOs having a dual exploitative and exploratory orientation and an extensive relational network. More recent research in the literature, based on ambidexterity and network theory, points to the impact that these variables could have on change management and innovation in uncertain and changing environments, such as those faced by TTOs in the current pandemic context. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyse whether Spanish TTOs, due to their ambidextrous orientation at the organisational and individual level, and their relational network with academic and market actors, are prepared to promote innovation in a COVID-19 context. Based on a cluster analysis of 29 Spanish TTOs, our results show that just a few of the Spanish TTOs surveyed would be prepared, from the perspective of ambidexterity and their relational capital, to promote innovation in a COVID-19 context. In conclusion, Spanish TTOs and their employees should focus more on ambidexterity and building extensive relational capital so that, through mentoring, training, incubation or the provision of various resources, they can help academics take advantage of the innovation opportunities offered by the changing and uncertain environment. This work has been co-financed by the 2014-2020 ERDF Operational Programme and by the Department of Economy, Knowledge, Enterprise and Universities of the Regional Government of Andalusia. Microservices and Machine Learning Algorithms for Adaptive Green Buildings

    Get PDF
In recent years, the use of services for Open Systems development has consolidated and strengthened. Advances in the Service Science and Engineering (SSE) community, promoted by the reinforcement of Web Services and Semantic Web technologies and the presence of new Cloud computing techniques, such as the proliferation of microservices solutions, have allowed software architects to experiment and develop new ways of building open and adaptable computer systems at runtime. Home automation, intelligent buildings, robotics, graphical user interfaces are some of the social atmosphere environments suitable in which to apply certain innovative trends. This paper presents a schema for the adaptation of Dynamic Computer Systems (DCS) using interdisciplinary techniques on model-driven engineering, service engineering and soft computing. The proposal manages an orchestrated microservices schema for adapting component-based software architectural systems at runtime. This schema has been developed as a three-layer adaptive transformation process that is supported on a rule-based decision-making service implemented by means of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. The experimental development was implemented in the Solar Energy Research Center (CIESOL) applying the proposed microservices schema for adapting home architectural atmosphere systems on Green Buildings
