Particular design of turbo machines
PFC del programa Erasmus EPS elaborat a Fachhochschule Kiel: University of Applied ScienciesTreball desenvolupat dins el marc del programa 'European Project Semester'.This paper details the design process of a pump impeller for use in transporting a threephase
product stream. This design is to be provided to EDUR-Pumpenfabrik and will
assist them in creating a new pump for use in a specialized market. Discussed in this paper
are various aspects of design including cover disks, dimension calculations, material of
construction selection, component selection, and motor selection. The anticipated life
cycle costs of this newly designed pump have been estimated and are included. Also
detailed in this report is a view of the pump markets with emphasis on European markets,
information regarding the competition of EDUR-Pumpenfabrik, information about a
potential customer of EDUR, and a web-page design to market the new product

An Analysis on the Efficiency of Philippine Microfinance Institutions: A Stochastic Frontier Approach
Microfinance institutions (MFIs) were created to provide loans and financial services for the poor as commercial banks have requirements that are not accessible to them. The Philippines government soon started using MFIs as a poverty alleviation tool to answer the market failure created by the commercial banking industry since it cannot accommodate the needs of low-income earners due to the high costs attached to it. However, recent studies have shown that MFIs are “mission drifting,” which means that they are deviating from their original social purpose and becoming more financially driven. As a result, this paper estimates the financial and social efficiency of Philippine MFIs using a two-step Stochastic Frontier Approach from 2005 to 2018
Operation Of The NuMi Beam Monitoring System
The NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) facility produces an intense neutrino beam for experiments. The NuMI Beam Monitoring system consists of four arrays of ion chambers that measure the intensity and distribution of the remnant hadron and tertiary muon beams produced in association with the neutrinos. The ion chambers operate in an environment of high particle fluxes and high radiation.Physic

UMass Amherst Campus Master Plan Sustainability Chapter
The UMass Amherst Campus Master Plan Sustainability Chapter articulates the manner in which the Campus Master Plan 2012 principles translate into specific recommendations for campus systems development in support of future smart growth. It summarizes the current physical campus-scale planning projects that Facilities & Campus Services have completed during and after the Master Plan process, and incorporates other operational and educational initiatives that have engaged our campus community as we plan for sustainability.
The CMP Chapter is organized in three major sections: i) sustainability overview; ii) campus master plan systems; iii) current initiatives; and iv) next steps. The first section provides the context for sustainability planning at UMass Amherst and summarizes key drivers, such as the Climate Action Plan of 2012 and our approach to greenhouse gas emissions accounting. The second section articulates the Campus Master Plan 2012 systems approach to sustainability and reviews other completed operational initiatives in infrastructure and facilities planning. The overview of current initiatives describes major efforts to advance sustainability across the campus community and is the basis for outlining the steps that Facilities & Campus Services and Sustainable UMass plan to take to advance the goal for a carbon neutral campus
Diabetes in Panama: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Clinical Management
ObjectivesTo draw evidence-based conclusions about the epidemiology, drivers, and management of diabetes in Panama based on a literature review and original analyses of large databases.MethodsA search about diabetes in Panama was conducted through PubMed. We used the final reports of 2 studies: the first Survey of Health and Life Quality, 2007, and the first Survey of Risk Factors Associated to Cardiovasular Diseases, 2010-2011, conducted in Panama and analyzed the databases. We reviewed the approach adopted by the Panamanian Social Security institution and the diabetes national guidelines published by the Panamanian Ministry of Health.FindingsThe prevalence of diabetes, as estimated in 1 database (ENSCAVI), was 5.4% (4.3% men; 6.0% women; OR = 1.41 [confidence interval 1.26-1.59]; 'P' ConclusionsDiabetes is a serious national public health threat in Panama. To address this problem in a public health modality, information from large databases was analyzed and presented to the Panamanian Ministry of Health to prompt constructive policy change to enhance diabetes prevention
Bacterial rotary export ATPases are allosterically regulated by the nucleotide second messenger cyclic-di-GMP
The widespread second messenger molecule cyclic di-GMP (cdG) regulates the transition from motile and virulent lifestyles to sessile, biofilm-forming ones in a wide range of bacteria. Many pathogenic and commensal bacterial-host interactions are known to be controlled by cdG signaling. Although the biochemistry of cyclic dinucleotide metabolism is well understood, much remains to be discovered about the downstream signaling pathways that induce bacterial responses upon cdG binding. As part of our ongoing research into the role of cdG signaling in plant-associated Pseudomonas species, we carried out an affinity capture screen for cdG binding proteins in the model organism Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25. The flagella export AAA+ ATPase FliI was identified as a result of this screen and subsequently shown to bind specifically to the cdG molecule, with a KD in the low micromolar range. The interaction between FliI and cdG appears to be very widespread. In addition to FliI homologs from diverse bacterial species, high affinity binding was also observed for the type III secretion system homolog HrcN and the type VI ATPase ClpB2. The addition of cdG was shown to inhibit FliI and HrcN ATPase activity in vitro. Finally, a combination of site-specific mutagenesis, mass spectrometry, and in silico analysis was used to predict that cdG binds to FliI in a pocket of highly conserved residues at the interface between two FliI subunits. Our results suggest a novel, fundamental role for cdG in controlling the function of multiple important bacterial export pathways, through direct allosteric control of export ATPase proteins
