No podía creerlo.

    Get PDF

Development and Implementation of an Assessment Model in a Sophomore Electromechanical Systems Design Laboratory for the ETAC-ABET Accreditation

In the field of assessment in higher education, practitioners regularly mention two features as key for success at implementing a sustainable assessment model, i) it has to be faculty-driven, and ii) it has to become part of the curriculum. This paper describes an assessment model incorporating these features. The model was developed and implemented for assessing both the ETAC-ABET Program Criteria for an associate degree in Electromechanical Engineering Technology program and the new ETAC-ABET (2019-2020) student outcome (2), which regards students\u27 ability to design systems, components, or processes for well-defined engineering technology problems appropriate to the discipline. This paper describes the implementation of our assessment model, including a description of the performance indicators used for assessment of criteria mentioned above, the structure of course selected for the assessment, the details of the laboratory experiments and final design project used as assessment tools, a summary of the collected data and a discussion of the assessment results, and the arrangements we made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that our method of incorporating assessment as regular course activities helps achieve the ultimate objective of education, i.e., continuous and constant improvement of students\u27 competencies and learning experiences

Analysis of action oriented effects on perceptual process of object recognition using physiological responses

    Get PDF
Action on any objects provides perceptual information about the environment. There is a significant evidence that human visual system responds to action possibilities in an image as perceiving any ones action stimulates human motor system. However very limited studies have been done to analyze the effect of object affordance during action perception and execution. To study the effect of object affordance on human perception, in this paper we have analyzed the human brain signals using EEG based oscillatory activity of brain. EEG responses corresponding to images of objects shown with correct, incorrect and without grips are examined. Exploration of different gripping effects has been done by extracting Alpha and Beta frequency bands using Discrete Wavelet Transform based band extraction method, then baseline normalized power of Alpha and Beta frequency bands at 24 positions of motor area of left and right side of brain are examined. The result shows that 12 pooled electrodes at central and central parietal region provides a clear discrimination among the three gripping cases in terms of calculated power. The presented research explores new applicabilities of object affordance to develop a variety of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) based devices and to improve motor imagery ability among motor disorder related patients

International nosocomial infection control consortium (INICC) report, data summary of 36 countries, for 2004-2009

The results of a surveillance study conducted by the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) from January 2004 through December 2009 in 422 intensive care units (ICUs) of 36 countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe are reported. During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN; formerly the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance system [NNIS]) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infections, we gathered prospective data from 313,008 patients hospitalized in the consortium's ICUs for an aggregate of 2,194,897 ICU bed-days. Despite the fact that the use of devices in the developing countries' ICUs was remarkably similar to that reported in US ICUs in the CDC's NHSN, rates of device-associated nosocomial infection were significantly higher in the ICUs of the INICC hospitals; the pooled rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection in the INICC ICUs of 6.8 per 1,000 central line-days was more than 3-fold higher than the 2.0 per 1,000 central line-days reported in comparable US ICUs. The overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia also was far higher (15.8 vs 3.3 per 1,000 ventilator-days), as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (6.3 vs. 3.3 per 1,000 catheter-days). Notably, the frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to imipenem (47.2% vs 23.0%), Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (76.3% vs 27.1%), Escherichia coli isolates to ceftazidime (66.7% vs 8.1%), Staphylococcus aureus isolates to methicillin (84.4% vs 56.8%), were also higher in the consortium's ICUs, and the crude unadjusted excess mortalities of device-related infections ranged from 7.3% (for catheter-associated urinary tract infection) to 15.2% (for ventilator-associated pneumonia).
