    The impact of government income transfers on the Brazilian job market

    This paper intends to analyze the impact of transferences over the formal and informal labor supply from the family heads. For the analyze of the effects in scope of the entrance decisions in job market it was estimated a multinomial logit, while in the scope of the working time it was used a variation of the method of Durbin and McFadden (1984)for selection bias correction. It has verified that transferences have positive effect over the probabilities that the individual doesn’t work and does informally work. However,this last one seems to be related to a substitution effect, once it has been observed a parallel negative effect over the probability to work on the formal sector. It has been obtained yet that the benefits negatively impacts on the offered hours by the family heads whether in the formal or non-formal sector, effect that has happened to be verified on the hours offering in formal sector of all individuals. On the other hand, as we consider the hours of working of those who are engaged in informal sector, it has obtained that income transferences perform not as a discourage issue but as a magnifier factor of worked hours.Este artigo se propõe a analisar o impacto das transferências de renda governamentais sobre a oferta de trabalho formal e informal dos chefes de família no Brasil. Adicionalmente analisam-se os seus efeitos sobre as decisões dos indivíduos de entrar no mercado de trabalho. Para o primeiro objetivo estimou-se um logit multinomial, enquanto no âmbito da oferta de trabalho utilizou-se uma variação do método de Durbin e Mc Fadden (1984), que corrige o problema de viés de seleção. Dentre outros resultados obtidos, as transferências de renda contribuíram para o aumento da probabilidade de um chefe de família estar desempregado ou trabalhar no mercado informal. Por outro lado, diminui a sua chance de ficar empregado no setor formal caracterizando assim um efeito substituição. Com relação à oferta no mercado de trabalho, as transferências de renda governamentais parecem estar desincentivando o aumento de horas de trabalho tanto no setor formal quanto informal

    Project “We Propose!” Territorial citizenship and curricular innovation in portuguese geographical education

    This paper considers the strengths of the project methodology for the construction of a more innovative, active and problematizing geographical education among Portuguese secondary students, through the critical reflection on the applicability of the Project “We Propose! / Nós Propomos!”, in the last five years. The methodological approach is based on a review of the national and international literature, a simplified content analysis of the last three curricular reforms in Portugal since the beginning of this century, and recourse to the explanation and interpretation of descriptive memories of the project. The scholarly significance of this study resides in the demonstration of how students are placed in contact with real-life geographers from the municipalities and local associations beyond the institutional and economic fabric of their surroundings and learn to value geographic knowledge and how geography can help in solving land use problems.Este documento considera los puntos fuertes de la metodología del proyecto para la construcción de una educación geográfica más innovadora, activa y problemática entre los estudiantes de secundaria portugueses, a través de la reflexión crítica sobre la aplicabilidad del Proyecto ¡Nosostros Proponemos! / Nós Propomos!, en los últimos cinco años. El enfoque metodológico se basa en una revisión de la literatura nacional e internacional, un análisis de contenido simplificado de las últimas tres reformas curriculares en Portugal desde el comienzo de este siglo, y el recurso a la explicación e interpretación de memorias descriptivas del proyecto. La importancia académica de este estudio reside en la demostración de cómo los estudiantes se ponen en contacto con geógrafos de la vida real de las municipalidades y asociaciones locales más allá del tejido institucional y económico de su entorno y aprenden a valorar el conocimiento geográfico y cómo la geografía puede ayudar a resolver problemas de uso del suelo.Cet article examine les points forts de la méthodologie du projet pour la construction d’une éducation géographique plus innovante, active et problématique parmi les élèves portugais du secondaire, à travers la réflexion critique sur l’applicabilité du projet “Nous proposons! / Nós Propomos!”, au cours des cinq dernières années. L’approche méthodologique est basée sur une revue de la littérature nationale et internationale, une analyse simplifiée du contenu des trois dernières réformes curriculaires au Portugal depuis le début de ce siècle, et le recours à l’explication et l’interprétation des mémoires descriptives du projet.     Quaternionic numerical range of complex matrices

    The paper explores further the computation of the quaternionic numerical range of a complex matrix. We prove a modified version of a conjecture by So and Tompson. Specifically, we show that the shape of the quaternionic numerical range for a complex matrix depends on the complex numerical range and two real values. We establish under which conditions the bild of a complex matrix coincides with its complex numerical range and when the quaternionic numerical range is convex

    The impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty on the real exchange rate: Evidence from the UK

    The world economy has been punctuated by uncertainty as a result of the 2008 subprime crisis, the European sovereign debt crisis, Brexit, and the 2016 US presidential elections, to mention but a few of the reasons. This study explores how the UK real exchange rate reacts to economic policy uncertainty (EPU) shocks using monthly data for the period 1998 to 2020. We contribute to the literature by identifying the long-run and short-run impacts of EPU using a cointegrated ARDL model, and by studying a country that has been through periods of both relatively low and high uncertainty. Results confirm that EPU has an important effect in the long run by depreciating the exchange rate. In addition to urging policymakers and regulators to concentrate on the sometimes difficult task of keeping policy uncertainty to a minimum as a way of sustaining exchange rate stability and thus promoting long-term economic growth, further evidence is provided on exchange rate fundamentals
