Online failure prevention from connected heating systems

Many water boiler manufacturers are not able to detect theoccurrence of failures in the machines they produce before they can poseinconvenience and sometimes danger for costumers and workers. Moreover,the number of boilers that have to be monitored, are many times inthe range of the thousands or even millions, proportionaly to the numberof costumers a company possesses. The detection of these failuresin real time, would provide a significant improvement to the perceptionthat consumers have of a certain company, since, if these failures occur,maintenance services can be deployed almost as soon as a failure happens.In this paper, an application prototype capable of monitoring andpreventing failures in domestic water boilers, on the fly, is presented.This application evaluates measurements which are performed by sensorswithin the boilers, and identifies the ones that greatly differ fromthose received previously, as new data arrives, detecting tendencies whichmight illustrate the occurrence of a failure. On an integrated DSM package associated to a solar thermal obligation. The ProSTO EU project and the Portuguese experience

Based on the work that it is running within the ProSTO EU project (http://www.solarordinances.eu/), this paper presents a tentative approach to an integrated demand side measures (DSM) package that must be associated to a solar thermal obligation (STO) in a community. All the complete set of measures that must be taken to succeed will be presented. The experience shows that it is necessary to get an integrated “policy package” in the way of “zero building emissions”, around the kernel key point of clear requirements, aiming energy savings, namely for energy demand limitation, and energy efficiency of thermal installations. A parent kernel key point of this “policy package” is quality: certification of thermal solar system and components; planner, designer and installer certification; technical mandatory requirements in the regulations; mandatory guarantee (maintenance contract). All relevant documents of these quality items must be integrated in the Building Use Manual for easy management. On the Best Practice Implementation of Solar Thermal Obligations. The ProSTO EU Project and the Portuguese experience

Based on the work that it is running within the ProSTO EU project (http://www.solarordinances.eu/), this paper presents a tentative approach to the best way for a successful implementation of a solar thermal obligation (STO) in a community. The EU framework, and base line assessment – including success factors and performance indicators were presented by the ProSTO coordinator elsewhere [1]. The Portuguese case was presented elsewhere too [2]. Here, all the complete set of measures that must be taken to succeed, will be presented. The experience shows that it is necessary to get an integrated “policy package” in the way of “zero building emissions”, around the kernel key point of clear requirements, aiming energy savings, namely for energy demand limitation, and energy efficiency of thermal installations. Underwater autonomous event-driven profiler and data retrieval system

Understanding Ocean variability, particularly in the productive upper water column, requires understanding ocean processes. Numerous physical and bio-geochemical processes in the water column must be studied at different spatial and temporal scales that still need to be fully understood. Current fixed-point observatory structures are one of the principal methods to collect data from the Oceans due to their endurance and capability to observe oceanic phenomena at a high rate. In this work, we present a new conceptual approach and design for an oceanic profiler which intends to overcome the most common logistical hurdle when deploying those kinds of platforms at sea.Peer Reviewe

Humans in an otherwise perfect environment: the Natural Park of Ria Formosa

Our first three weeks of ethnographical research in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa were spent at the interpretive centre. Visitors to this centre may walk along the pedestrian trail. While in the trail, that leads through one of the rare forests in Ria Formosa, they have the opportunity to appreciate some living examples – properly marked by interpretive signage – of the natural and cultural heritage of Park’s territory: the salines, the dunes, the beach, the marshes, the archaeological remains of Roman salting tanks, and the tide mill restored by the Park. Sometimes, a few natives may be seen catching shellfish. The interpretive centre offers a resumed visual experience of “Ria Formosa” to its visitors, in which nature coexists harmoniously with human presence

Um inquérito à paisagem e às suas diferentes noções constituído em fenómeno conceptual e artístico que desafia a medição objectiva, que é de natureza qualitativa e ideográfica; de sentido específico, subjectivo e contingente. Através da concretização de um livro de fotografia denota-se o potencial que a fotografia apresenta não só para a reivindicação da memória, mas também para erigir a identidade dum lugar, em simultâneo possibilitando a construção de um discurso crítico que convoca o espectador para uma interrogação sobre o território, o modo de o ver, e a própria fotografia

A especialização metabólica em jovens futebolistas do escalão de iniciados e infantis

O trabalho com jovens futebolistas deverá ser escudado em elevados níveis de conhecimento sobre as capacidades físicas e a forma como estas se desenvolvem nas crianças. O objetivo do presente trabalho é de perceber se se observa a existência de especialização metabólica em jovens futebolistas pertencentes ao escalão de iniciados (idade: 13 a 15 anos) e infantis (idade: 10 a 12 anos). Para responder ao objetivo definido, avaliou-se a potência aeróbia (PA) e a potência anaeróbia (PAN) de uma amostra constituída por 64 participantes. Destes, 11 eram praticantes federados infantis de futebol (idade: 11,7 ± 0,5 anos; peso: 44,1 ± 6,9 Kg; IMC: 20,6 ± 2,7 kg/m2), e 21 participantes federados iniciados de futebol (Idade: 13,9 ± 0,7 anos; Peso: 54,9 ± 10,6 Kg; IMC: 20,5 ± 3,0 kg/m2). O grupo de controlo era constituído por 11 participantes do escalão etário de infantis (Idade 10,9 ± 0,3 anos; Peso 40,1 Kg ± 7,3; IMC: 19,2 ± 2,4 kg/m2) e 21 participantes do escalão etário de iniciados (Idade: 13,9 ± 0,8 anos; Peso: 58,9 ± 11,7 Kg; IMC: 22,1 ± 4,4 kg/m2), mas sem prática desportiva federada. A PA (protocolo de Balke modificado com análise direta de gases) e a PAN (protocolo Wingate para o trem inferior) foram avaliadas e comparadas entre grupos, assim como o nível de correlação entre as variáveis aeróbias e as variáveis anaeróbias (SPSS 20.0). Os resultados verificados indicam que para o escalão de infantis o treino não é um factor conducente a uma superior PA e PAN entre os grupos mas que para o escalão dos iniciados a prática regular da modalidade produz efeitos sobre estas componentes. No entanto, no que concerne há especialização metabólica, esta não se verifica em nenhum escalão embora se possa admitir que há indicadores de que esta se comece a manifestar no escalão de iniciados

O papel do diretor de segurança na segurança privada em Portugal

The Portuguese private security legal framework created the regulated profession of Security Director, set forth the respective job description and its mandatory training. In order to better understand the evolution potential of this profession, it was searched what novelty it brings, what is it for and what are its advantages. Through bibliographic review, it was summarized the current knowledge state about this function. Data were collected from the immersion of this author in the academic and professional reality of Security Director, and from a survey questionnaire of a representative sample of those trained for it. It was concluded that: The role of Security Director brings greater ethics to the private security system, better legal compliance, better communication between Public Security Forces and private security; by requiring a minimum qualification and training in a higher education institution to access the profession, it is possible to provide an improved security service and also to develop this sector of activity; if this function is exercised with a holistic view, it allows a greater level of global safety and security (not just against intentionally caused risks). The following legislative and formative evolutions of the profession are envisaged: a more holistic view (safety and security); requirement of a higher academic degree and specific training in security, to access the profession.O regime jurídico português da segurança privada criou a profissão regulada de Diretor de Segurança, descriminou as suas funções e a sua formação obrigatória. Para conhecer o potencial de evolução desta profissão, pesquisou-se o que traz de novo, para que serve e qual a vantagem. Resumiu-se o estado do conhecimento desta função, por revisão bibliográfica. Recolheram-se dados da imersão deste autor na realidade académica e profissional de Diretor de Segurança, e de inquérito por questionário a amostra representativa dos formados para a profissão. Concluiu-se que: A função de Diretor de Segurança traz maior ética ao sistema de segurança privada, melhor cumprimento da legalidade, melhor comunicação entre Forças e Serviços de Segurança Pública e a segurança privada; Ao ser exigida uma habilitação mínima de acesso à profissão e uma formação habilitante em instituição de ensino superior, pode propiciar um melhor serviço de segurança e o desenvolvimento deste setor de atividade; Se esta função for exercida com uma visão holística permite um maior nível de segurança global (não apenas contra riscos intencionalmente causados). Perspetivam-se como evoluções legislativas e formativas da profissão: visão mais holística da segurança; exigência de um grau académico superior e formação específica em segurança, para acesso à profissão

A ESPIRITUALIDADE: UMA DIMENSÃO OCULTA NOS CUIDADOS

Comunicação oral resultante de um trabalho de investigação realizado com enfermeiros num hospital local onde foi identificada a participação destes no diagnóstico e planeamento de cuidados de enfermagem que se relacionam com a dimensão espiritual do ser humano. Foram também identificados os indicadores que estão presentes no processo de construção do diagnóstico de ”angústia espiritual” e as intervenções de enfermagem que poderão ser implementadas num processo de cuidados de saúde
