The problem of finding a maximin Latin hypercube design in two dimensions can be described as positioning n non-attacking rooks on an n x n chessboard such that the minimal distance between pairs of rooks is maximized.Maximin Latin hypercube designs are important for the approximation and optimization of black box functions. In this paper general formulas are derived for maximin Latin hypercube designs for general n, when the distance measure is l8 or l1. Furthermore, for the distance measure l2 we obtain maximin Latin hypercube designs for n = 70 and approximate maximin Latin hypercube designs for the values of n.We show the reduction in the maximin distance caused by imposing the Latin hypercube design structure is small. This justifies the use of maximin Latin hypercube designs instead of unrestricted designs.Branch-and-bound;circle packing;Latin hypercube design;mixed integer programming;non-collapsing;space-filling

Going global or going nowhere? Chinese media in a time of flux

This article focuses on how Chinese media industries have sought to expand into new territories, identifying several mechanisms by which Chinese cultural and media products are traded and consumed: namely finished content, co-productions, formats and online platforms. The article also considers the value of overseas location shooting for domestic programmes and acquisition of international media assets. The key idea that is discussed in regards to China's outward-bound trade mission is know-how. In respect to media production, producers tend to opt for risk avoidance rather than creative exploration. Consequently, Chinese producers, investors and practitioners are deficient in knowledge of international markets and audience perceptions because the government has chosen to intervene, select and guide Chinese products. The article suggests this is gradually changing

Revisiting the relevance of economic theory to hotel revenue management education and practice in the era of Big Data

Abstract This paper explores the role of economics in hospitality education and industry practice, with a particular focus on revenue management, and puts forward an argument for a return to the inclusion of economic theory in UK hospitality education, not seen since the 1990s. Given the increasing amounts of pricing data available to both managers and customers and the consequent market complexities now seen, developing economic literacy is demonstrated to be a crucial skill required for future hospitality graduates, allowing them to make successful revenue decisions and sense-check with confidence the decisions made by automated revenue systems. Economic literacy is defined as a balanced understanding of economic theory that can be applied in real-life business scenarios, extending beyond simple consideration of supply and demand to a mixture of neoclassical and behavioural approaches to economics

New linear plasma devices in the trilateral euregio cluster for an integrated approach to plasma surface interactions in fusion reactors

    Get PDF
New linear plasma devices are currently being constructed or planned in the Trilateral Euregio Cluster (TEC) to meet the challenges with respect to plasma surface interactions in DEMO and ITER: i) MAGNUM-PSI (FOM), a high particle and power flux device with super-conducting magnetic field coils which will reach ITER-like divertor conditions at high magnetic field, ii) the newly proposed linear plasma device JULE-PSI (FZJ), which will allow to expose toxic and neutron activated target samples to ITER-like fluences and ion energies including in vacuo analysis of neutron activated samples, and iii) the plasmatron VISION I. a compact plasma device which will be operated inside the tritium lab at SCK-CEN Mol, capable to investigate tritium plasmas and moderately activated wall materials. This contribution shows the capabilities of the new devices and their forerunner experiments (Pilot-PSI at FOM and PSI-2 Julich at FZJ) in view of the main objectives of the new TEC program on plasma surface interactions. Denying bogus skepticism in climate change and tourism research

    No full text
This final response to the two climate change denial papers by Shani and Arad further highlights the inaccuracies, misinformation and errors in their commentaries. The obfuscation of scientific research and the consensus on anthropogenic climate change may have significant long-term negative consequences for better understanding the implications of climate change and climate policy for tourism and create confusion and delay in developing and implementing tourism sector responses
