Revisiting Alu of The Swamp Dwellers by Soyinka and Views by Beauvoir in The Second Sex: Unifying Humanity Versus Feminist Separatism

    Get PDF
This paper concentrates on a comparative study between Alu of the drama The Swamp Dwellers by Soyinka and the Feminist views of Beauvoir in The Second Sex while the areas of the drama so far explored and discussed are native narrative, political views, decline through modernization, moral-spiritual standpoint, family bonding and human-nature tie. In the drama, if the vital role played by Alu is construed, she appears as a woman figure of infinite capaciousness with her duties, responsibilities, feelings, commitments, rights and privileges in family and society. Alu succeeds because her human-centric Yoruba tradition gives support to her family-centric biology and psychology. But contrary to Alu, Feminist views disseminated by Beauvoir in The Second Sex embark on the estrangement of women from family and humanity. Thus, the paper seeks to unearth how Alu of Yoruba tradition harmonizes and unifies humanity through her role in family and society while Feminism of Beauvoir opposes them and wishes women to be separated. In this qualitative research of thematic analysis method, Family Systems Theory and Religious Humanism Theory were applied. By recommending for women the re-introduction of traditional human-centric life in family and society, this research may contribute to women’s emancipation from misery.

From home to homelessness: A reflection on Nora’s possible post-departure feminist life in A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

In Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Nora’s departure from home being hurt by her husband’s behavior appears to be the most important event of the drama igniting so far a wide critical parlances of Feminist array that appreciate the departure as Nora’s freedom from male-dominated society. But Nora’s success in having a home of comfort and happiness in her post-departure future life in Feminist world deserves critical attention too. We may posit Nora will shift to a Feminist world considering the departure as the manifestation of her newly imbibed Feminist spirit because the first wave Feminism of her time is either indifferent about or antagonistic to family life by being politics-centric. However, when Nora has within her a woman’s indispensable family-centric female construction to face nonfamilial politics-centric first wave feminism, she is sure to find no home in that Feminist world. Thus, this paper aims at examining how Nora, with her declared departure from home, is going to shift to the world of first wave Feminism which, by being nonfamilial and politics-centric, works against the very family-centric construction of Nora’s female construction and offers homelessness to her.

A light weight stemmer for Bengali and its use in spelling checker

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 6).Stemming is an operation that splits a word into the constituent root part and affix without doing complete morphological analysis. It is used to improve the performance of spelling checkers and information retrieval applications, where morphological analysis would be too computationally expensive. For spelling checkers specifically, using stemming may drastically reduce the dictionary size, often a bottleneck for mobile and embedded devices. This paper presents a computationally inexpensive stemming algorithm for Bengali, which handles suffix removal in a domain independent way. The evaluation of the proposed algorithm in a Bengali spelling checker indicates that it can be effectively used in information retrieval applications in general.Md. Zahurul IslamMd. Reaching Happiness beyond Emancipation: A Study on the Human-Centric Role of Linde in A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

    Get PDF
Henrik Ibsen’s drama A Doll’s House portrays the late 19th century Norway where protagonist Nora and her eventual manifestation of Feminism are almost all the time at the centre of critical attention. But Mrs. Kristina Linde is also a character of magnanimous stature with her enthusiastic sense of belonging and heart-felt services to family and society. In this manner, the human-centric role provides Linde with satisfaction that amounts to happiness, taking her ways ahead of emancipation in a world where women’s emancipation from sufferings is still an unresolved issue. Notably, Linde’s human-centric role gains authenticity as a true means of women’s emancipation by reflecting higher knowledge which is essential for any human affair to be true and real. Thus, this paper aims at exploring how Mrs. Kristina Linde in A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, being in her family and society and playing vital roles accordingly, derives happiness proving the truth that all women can be human-centric in family and society, and can have happiness going far ahead of emancipation changing the global scenario of women’s misery. The methodology of thematic analysis was followed in this research. The research may contribute in propounding human-centric family and social life as the proper means of women’s emancipation

Tomato is a crop with the greatest economic importance in the world and salinity stress causes are reduction in the quantity and quality of crop production. Today the main challenge in world agriculture is to sustain the continuously growing global population, and this becomes more difficult due to climatic change, as this imposes further abiotic stress. The aim of this study was to find out the salinity effect on tomato production. The study was initiated at the Irrigation and Water Management (IWM) research field of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh during October 2007 to April 2008 cropping season. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The treatments were: T1= Irrigation with fresh water, T2= Irrigation with saline water containing 4 dS m−1 of Electrical conductivity (Seawater cannot hold as much dissolved oxygen as freshwater due to its high salinity. Conductivity and salinity have a strong correlation.), T3= Irrigation with saline water containing 6 dS m−1 of Electrical conductivity, T4= Irrigation with saline water containing 8 dS m−1 of Electrical conductivity and T5= Irrigation with saline water containing 10 dS m−1 of Electrical conductivity. We found that the plants irrigated with the T1 treatment (Irrigation with fresh water) was the highest fruit yield plant-1 (1.52 kg) whereas the lowest yield (0.667 kg) was obtained from the higher level of saline water treatment T5 (10 dS m−1). When the fruit yield was considered the effective treatment for the highest total fruit yield (36.57 t ha-1) was produced by the T1 treatment (Irrigation with fresh water) and the lowest fruit yield (21.87 t ha-1) was found from the treatment T5 (10 dS m−1). The effect of different salinity levels of irrigation such as fresh water, 4 dS m−1, 6 dS m−1, 8 dS m−1 and 10 dS m−1 on total soluble solid was significantly influenced. The highest total soluble solid (2.53) was shown in T5 treatment (10 dS m−1) whereas the lowest (2.00) in Irrigation with fresh water treatment

An Alternative Proposed Method for Solution of Assignment Problem

    Get PDF
The assignment problem is a particular type of linear programming problem. In this paper, we analyzed the standard and existing proposed methods.  After studying these methods, we proposed a new alternative method for solving the assignment problem. We examined the newly proposed method by a couple of numerical examples and compare this result with the standard method. The main characteristic of this newly proposed method is that it constructed a very easy logical and arithmetical algorithm. Here we point out some advantages and limitations of the new proposed method. Programming code for the newly proposed method has been added in this paper

Background: The best mouth function, the absence of disease, and oral health are achieved by maintaining the highest self-esteem possible. When someone has good dental health, they can communicate and connect with people without getting sick, feeling uncomfortable, or feeling embarrassed. This study aimed to evaluate the Oral health-related disorder specifically to assess dental caries and gingivitis among children with behavioral problems. Methods: This study was a prospective cross-sectional investigation carried out at Kalachandpur Government Primary School and Jashim Uddin Institute, Dhaka. The study was carried out between October 2021 and December 2022 and included 650 pediatric patients who were aged between 6 to 15 years. Results: Most 290 (44.62%) children were aged 6-9 years, 250 (38.46%) were 10-12 years, and the rest 110 (16.92%) were 13-15 years old. Patients with 11-15 years had lower dental caries. 310 (48%) were female, and 340 (52%) were male. Dental caries is associated with elevated risk. Children in the elevated caries risk group had a significantly higher mean value of conduct problems and Hyperactivity/inattention based on the SDQ compared to those with low caries risk. No statistically significant differences were found between the low caries risk group and the elevated caries group for the other subscales. Conclusions: There were statistically more children in the study group who had a high risk of getting caries. Behavior problems were observed while externalizing children who had a high risk of getting caries. Children with externalizing behavior also have more conduct problems and hyperactivity compared to children with reduced caries risk

Muscle Fatigue in the Three Heads of the Triceps Brachii During a Controlled Forceful Hand Grip Task with Full Elbow Extension Using Surface Electromyography

    Get PDF
The objective of the present study was to investigate the time to fatigue and compare the fatiguing condition among the three heads of the triceps brachii muscle using surface electromyography during an isometric contraction of a controlled forceful hand grip task with full elbow extension. Eighteen healthy subjects concurrently performed a single 90 s isometric contraction of a controlled forceful hand grip task and full elbow extension. Surface electromyographic signals from the lateral, long and medial heads of the triceps brachii muscle were recorded during the task for each subject. The changes in muscle activity among the three heads of triceps brachii were measured by the root mean square values for every 5 s period throughout the total contraction period. The root mean square values were then analysed to determine the fatiguing condition for the heads of triceps brachii muscle. Muscle fatigue in the long, lateral, and medial heads of the triceps brachii started at 40 s, 50 s, and 65 s during the prolonged contraction, respectively. The highest fatiguing rate was observed in the long head (slope = -2.863), followed by the medial head (slope = -2.412) and the lateral head (slope = -1.877) of the triceps brachii muscle. The results of the present study concurs with previous findings that the three heads of the triceps brachii muscle do not work as a single unit, and the fiber type/composition is different among the three heads
