Dynamical Model of Coherent Pion Production in Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering
We study coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the
energy region relevant to neutrino oscillation experiments of current interest.
Our approach is based on a combined use of the Sato-Lee model of electroweak
pion production on a nucleon and the Delta-hole model of pion-nucleus
reactions. Thus we develop a model which describes pion-nucleus scattering and
electroweak coherent pion production in a unified manner. Numerical
calculations are carried out for the case of the 12C target. All the free
parameters in our model are fixed by fitting to both total and elastic
differential cross sections for pi-12C scattering. Then we demonstrate the
reliability of our approach by confronting our prediction for the coherent pion
photo-productions with data. Finally, we calculate total and differential cross
sections for neutrino-induced coherent pion production, and some of the results
are (will be) compared with the recent (forthcoming) data from K2K, SciBooNE
and MiniBooNE. We also study effect of the non-locality of the
Delta-propagation in the nucleus, and compare the elementary amplitudes used in

Systematic Definition of Protein Constituents along the Major Polarization Axis Reveals an Adaptive Reuse of the Polarization Machinery in Pheromone-Treated Budding Yeast
Polarizing cells extensively restructure cellular components in a spatially and temporally coupledmanner along the major axis of cellular extension. Budding yeast are a useful model of polarized growth, helping to define many molecular components of this conserved process. Besides budding, yeast cells also differentiate upon treatment with pheromone from the opposite mating type, forming a mating projection (the ‘shmoo’) by directional restructuring of the cytoskeleton, localized vesicular transport and overall reorganization of the cytosol. To characterize the proteomic localization changes ac-companying polarized growth, we developed and implemented a novel cell microarray-based imaging assay for measuring the spatial redistribution of a large fraction of the yeast proteome, and applied this assay to identify proteins localized along the mating projection following pheromone treatment. We further trained a machine learning algorithm to refine the cell imaging screen, identifying additional shmoo-localized proteins. In all, we identified 74 proteins that specifically localize to the mating projection, including previously uncharacterized proteins (Ycr043c, Ydr348c, Yer071c, Ymr295c, and Yor304c-a) and known polarization complexes such as the exocyst. Defining forgiveness: Christian clergy and general population perspectives.
The lack of any consensual definition of forgiveness is a serious weakness in the research literature (McCullough, Pargament & Thoresen, 2000). As forgiveness is at the core of Christianity, this study returns to the Christian source of the concept to explore the meaning of forgiveness for practicing Christian clergy. Comparisons are made with a general population sample and social science definitions of forgiveness to ensure that a shared meaning of forgiveness is articulated. Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy (N = 209) and a general population sample (N = 159) completed a postal questionnaire about forgiveness. There is agreement on the existence of individual differences in forgiveness. Clergy and the general population perceive reconciliation as necessary for forgiveness while there is no consensus within psychology. The clergy suggests that forgiveness is limitless and that repentance is unnecessary while the general population suggests that there are limits and that repentance is necessary. Psychological definitions do not conceptualize repentance as necessary for forgiveness and the question of limits has not been addressed although within therapy the implicit assumption is that forgiveness is limitless.</p
CD4 Depletion in SIV-Infected Macaques Results in Macrophage and Microglia Infection with Rapid Turnover of Infected Cells
In rhesus macaques (RMs), experimental depletion of CD4+ T-cells prior to SIV infection results in higher viremia and emergence of CD4-independent SIV-envelopes. In this study we used the rhesus recombinant anti-CD4 antibody CD4R1 to deplete RM CD4+ T-cells prior to SIVmac251 infection and investigate the sources of the increased viral burden and the lifespan of productively infected cells. CD4-depleted animals showed (i) set-point viral load two-logs higher than controls; (ii) macrophages constituting 80% of all SIV vRNA+ cells in lymph node and mucosal tissues; (iii) substantial expansion of pro-inflammatory monocytes; (iv) aberrant activation and infection of microglial cells; and (v) lifespan of productively infected cells significantly longer in comparison to controls, but markedly shorter than previously estimated for macrophages. The net effect of CD4+ T-cell depletion is an inability to control SIV replication and a shift in the tropism of infected cells to macrophages, microglia, and, potentially, other CD4-low cells which all appear to have a shortened in vivo lifespan. We believe these findings have important implications for HIV eradication studies
Measurement of inclusive charged current interactions on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam
The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of inclusive charged current
interactions of muon neutrinos on carbon with an average energy of 0.8 GeV
using the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. We compare our measurement with two
neutrino interaction simulations: NEUT and NUANCE. The charged current
interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting
the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3%
for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction
cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the
energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first
measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These
results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio

Dense Gas in Nearby Galaxies: XVII. The Distribution of Ammonia in NGC253, Maffei2 and IC342
The central few 100 pc of galaxies often contain large amounts of molecular
gas. The chemical and physical properties of these extragalactic star formation
regions differ from those in galactic disks, but are poorly constrained. This
study aims to develop a better knowledge of the spatial distribution and
kinetic temperature of the dense neutral gas associated with the nuclear
regions of three prototypical spiral galaxies, NGC253, IC342, and Maffei2. VLA
CnD and D configuration measurements have been made of three ammonia (NH3)
inversion transitions. The (J,K)=(1,1) and (2,2) transitions of NH3 were imaged
toward IC342 and Maffei2. The (3,3) transition was imaged toward NGC253. The
entire flux obtained from single-antenna measurements is recovered for all
three galaxies observed. Derived lower limits to the kinetic temperatures
determined for the giant molecular clouds in the centers of these galaxies are
between 25 and 50K. There is good agreement between the distributions of NH3
and other H2 tracers, such as rare CO isotopologues or HCN, suggesting that NH3
is representative of the distribution of dense gas. The "Western Peak" in IC342
is seen in the (6,6) line but not in lower transitions, suggesting maser

A Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance at the 1 Scale
The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports initial results from a search for
oscillations. A signal-blind analysis was
performed using a data sample corresponding to protons on
target. The data are consistent with background prediction across the full
range of neutrino energy reconstructed assuming quasielastic scattering, MeV: 144 electron-like events have been observed in this
energy range, compared to an expectation of events. No
significant excess of events has been observed, both at low energy, 200-475
MeV, and at high energy, 475-1250 MeV. The data are inconclusive with respect
to antineutrino oscillations suggested by data from the Liquid Scintillator
Neutrino Detector at Los Alamos National Laboratory.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
The Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey IV: 1.1 and 0.35 mm Dust Continuum Emission in the Galactic Center Region
The Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) data for a six square degree region
of the Galactic plane containing the Galactic center is analyzed and compared
to infrared and radio continuum data. The BGPS 1.1 mm emission consists of
clumps interconnected by a network of fainter filaments surrounding cavities, a
few of which are filled with diffuse near-IR emission indicating the presence
of warm dust or with radio continuum characteristic of HII regions or supernova
remnants. New 350 {\mu}m images of the environments of the two brightest
regions, Sgr A and B, are presented. Sgr B2 is the brightest mm-emitting clump
in the Central Molecular Zone and may be forming the closest analog to a super
star cluster in the Galaxy. The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) contains the
highest concentration of mm and sub-mm emitting dense clumps in the Galaxy.
Most 1.1 mm features at positive longitudes are seen in silhouette against the
3.6 to 24 {\mu}m background observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope. However,
only a few clumps at negative longitudes are seen in absorption, confirming the
hypothesis that positive longitude clumps in the CMZ tend to be on the
near-side of the Galactic center, consistent with the suspected orientation of
the central bar in our Galaxy. Some 1.1 mm cloud surfaces are seen in emission
at 8 {\mu}m, presumably due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A
~0.2\degree (~30 pc) diameter cavity and infrared bubble between l \approx
0.0\degree and 0.2\degree surrounds the Arches and Quintuplet clusters and Sgr
A. The bubble contains several clumpy dust filaments that point toward Sgr

Interstellar gas within pc of Sgr A
We seek to obtain a coherent and realistic three-dimensional picture of the
interstellar gas out to about 10 pc of the dynamical center of our Galaxy,
which is supposed to be at Sgr A. We review the existing observational
studies on the different gaseous components that have been identified near Sgr
A, and retain all the information relating to their spatial configuration
and/or physical state. Based on the collected information, we propose a
three-dimensional representation of the interstellar gas, which describes each
component in terms of both its precise location and morphology and its
thermodynamic properties. The interstellar gas near Sgr A can represented
by five basic components, which are, by order of increasing size: (1) a central
cavity with roughly equal amounts of warm ionized and atomic gases, (2) a ring
of mainly molecular gas, (3) a supernova remnant filled with hot ionized gas,
(4) a radio halo of warm ionized gas and relativistic particles, and (5) a belt
of massive molecular clouds. While the halo gas fills of the
studied volume, the molecular components enclose of the

Embryonic exposure to the fungicide vinclozolin causes virilization of females and alteration of progesterone receptor expression in vivo: an experimental study in mice
BACKGROUND: Vinclozolin is a fungicide that has been reported to have anti-androgenic effects in rats. We have found that in utero exposure to natural or synthetic progesterones can induce hypospadias in mice, and that the synthetic progesterone medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) feminizes male and virilizes female genital tubercles. In the current work, we selected a relatively low dose of vinclozolin to examine its in utero effects on the development of the genital tubercle, both at the morphological and molecular levels. METHODS: We gave pregnant dams vinclozolin by oral gavage from gestational days 13 through 17. We assessed the fetal genital tubercles from exposed fetuses at E19 to determine location of the urethral opening. After determination of gonadal sex, either genital tubercles were harvested for mRNA quantitation, or urethras were injected with a plastic resin for casting. We analyzed quantified mRNA levels between treated and untreated animals for mRNA levels of estrogen receptors α and β, progesterone receptor, and androgen receptor using nonparametric tests or ANOVA. To determine effects on urethral length (males have long urethras compared to females), we measured the lengths of the casts and performed ANOVA analysis on these data. RESULTS: Our morphological results indicated that vinclozolin has morphological effects similar to those of MPA, feminizing males (hypospadias) and masculinizing females (longer urethras). Because these results reflected our MPA results, we investigated the effects of in utero vinclozolin exposure on the mRNA expression levels of androgen, estrogen α and β, and progesterone receptors. At the molecular level, vinclozolin down-regulated estrogen receptor α mRNA in females and up-regulated progesterone receptor mRNA. Vinclozolin-exposed males exhibited up-regulated estrogen receptor α and progesterone receptor mRNA, effects we have also seen with exposure to the synthetic estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that vinclozolin virilizes females and directly or indirectly affects progesterone receptor expression. It also affects estrogen receptor expression in a sex-based manner. We found no in vivo effect of vinclozolin on androgen receptor expression. We propose that vinclozolin, which has been designated an anti-androgen, may also exert its effects by involving additional steroid-signaling pathways
