    Tungsten Behavior at High Temperature and High Stress

    Re­cent­ly re­port­ed re­sults on the tung­sten life­time/fa­tigue tests under con­di­tions ex­pect­ed in the Neu­tri­no Fac­to­ry tar­get have strength­ened the case of solid tar­get op­tion for a Neu­tri­no Fac­to­ry. This paper gives de­scrip­tion of the de­tailed mea­sure­ments of the tung­sten prop­er­ties at high tem­per­a­ture and high stress. We have per­formed ex­ten­sive set of mea­sure­ments of the sur­face dis­place­ment and ve­loc­i­ty of the tung­sten wires that were stressed by pass­ing a fast, high cur­rent pulse through a thin sam­ple. Ra­di­al and lon­gi­tu­di­nal os­cil­la­tions of the wire were mea­sured by a Laser Doppler Vi­brom­e­ter. The wire was op­er­at­ed at tem­per­a­tures of 300-2500 K by ad­just­ing the pulse rep­e­ti­tion rate. In doing so we have tried to sim­u­late the con­di­tions (high stress and tem­per­a­ture) ex­pect­ed at the Neu­tri­no Fac­to­ry. Most im­por­tant re­sult of this study is an ex­per­i­men­tal con­fir­ma­tion that strength of tung­sten re­mains high at high tem­per­a­ture and high stress. The ex­per­i­men­tal re­sults have been found to agree very well with LS-DY­NA mod­elling re­sults

    Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Genetic Associations: Mostly False? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Objective/BackgroundMany associations between abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and genetic polymorphisms have been reported. It is unclear which are genuine and which may be caused by type 1 errors, biases, and flexible study design. The objectives of the study were to identify associations supported by current evidence and to investigate the effect of study design on reporting associations.MethodsData sources were MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science. Reports were dual-reviewed for relevance and inclusion against predefined criteria (studies of genetic polymorphisms and AAA risk). Study characteristics and data were extracted using an agreed tool and reports assessed for quality. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 and fixed- and random-effects meta-analyses were conducted for variants that were reported at least twice, if any had reported an association. Strength of evidence was assessed using a standard guideline.ResultsSearches identified 467 unique articles, of which 97 were included. Of 97 studies, 63 reported at least one association. Of 92 studies that conducted multiple tests, only 27% corrected their analyses. In total, 263 genes were investigated, and associations were reported in polymorphisms in 87 genes. Associations in CDKN2BAS, SORT1, LRP1, IL6R, MMP3, AGTR1, ACE, and APOA1 were supported by meta-analyses.ConclusionUncorrected multiple testing and flexible study design (particularly testing many inheritance models and subgroups, and failure to check for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium) contributed to apparently false associations being reported. Heterogeneity, possibly due to the case mix, geographical, temporal, and environmental variation between different studies, was evident.     TLD1433 photosensitizer inhibits conjunctival melanoma cells in zebrafish ectopic and orthotopic tumour models

    The ruthenium-based photosensitizer (PS) TLD1433 has completed a phase I clinical trial for photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment of bladder cancer. Here, we investigated a possible repurposing of this drug for treatment of conjunctival melanoma (CM). CM is a rare but often deadly ocular cancer. The efficacy of TLD1433 was tested on several cell lines from CM (CRMM1, CRMM2 and CM2005), uveal melanoma (OMM1, OMM2.5, MEL270), epidermoid carcinoma (A431) and cutaneous melanoma (A375). Using 15 min green light irradiation (21mW/cm(2), 19 J.cm(-2), 520 nm), the highest phototherapeutic index (PI) was reached in CM cells, with cell death occurring via apoptosis and necrosis. The therapeutic potential of TLD1433 was hence further validated in zebrafish ectopic and newly-developed orthotopic CM models. Fluorescent CRMM1 and CRMM2 cells were injected into the circulation of zebrafish (ectopic model) or behind the eye (orthotopic model) and 24 h later, the engrafted embryos were treated with the maximally-tolerated dose of TLD1433. The drug was administrated in three ways, either by (i) incubating the fish in drug-containing water (WA), or (ii) injecting the drug intravenously into the fish (IV), or (iii) injecting the drug retro-orbitally (RO) into the fish. Optimally, four consecutive PDT treatments were performed on engrafted embryos using 60 min drug-to-light intervals and 90 min green light irradiation (21 mW/cm(2), 114 J.cm(-2), 520 nm). This PDT protocol was not toxic to the fish. In the ectopic tumour model, both systemic administration by IV injection and RO injection of TLD1433 significantly inhibited growth of engrafted CRMM1 and CRMM2 cells. However, in the orthotopic model, tumour growth was only attenuated by localized RO injection of TLD1433. These data unequivocally prove that the zebrafish provides a fast vertebrate cancer model that can be used to test the administration regimen, host toxicity and anti-cancer efficacy of PDT drugs against CM. Based on our results, we suggest repurposing of TLD1433 for treatment of incurable CM and further testing in alternative pre-clinical models.Animal science

    Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

    We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let

    Using behavior-analytic implicit tests to assess sexual interests among normal and sex-offender populations

    The development of implicit tests for measuring biases and behavioral predispositions is a recent development within psychology. While such tests are usually researched within a social-cognitive paradigm, behavioral researchers have also begun to view these tests as potential tests of conditioning histories, including in the sexual domain. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the utility of a behavioral approach to implicit testing and means by which implicit tests can be built to the standards of behavioral psychologists. Research findings illustrating the short history of implicit testing within the experimental analysis of behavior are reviewed. Relevant parallel and overlapping research findings from the field of social cognition and on the Implicit Association Test are also outlined. New preliminary data obtained with both normal and sex offender populations are described in order to illustrate how behavior-analytically conceived implicit tests may have potential as investigative tools for assessing histories of sexual arousal conditioning and derived stimulus associations. It is concluded that popular implicit tests are likely sensitive to conditioned and derived stimulus associations in the history of the test-taker rather than 'unconscious cognitions', per se

    The peer-review crisis is posing a risk to the scholarly peer-reviewed journal system. Journals have to ask many potential peer reviewers to obtain a minimum acceptable number of peers accepting reviewing a manuscript. Several solutions have been suggested to overcome this shortage. From reimbursing for the job, to eliminating pre-publication reviews, one cannot predict which is more dangerous for the future of scholarly publishing. And, why not acknowledging their contribution to the final version of the article published? PubMed created two categories of contributors: authors [AU] and collaborators [IR]. Why not a third category for the peer-reviewer?Scopu

    Jadomycins derived from the assimilation and incorporation of norvaline and norleucine

    Streptomyces venezuelae ISP5230 is recognized for the production of chloramphenicol and the jadomycin family of natural products. The jadomycins are angucycline natural products containing a unique oxazolone ring incorporating an amino acid present in the minimal culture media. Substitution of different amino acids results in products of varying biological activity. Analysis of cultures of S. venezuelae ISP5230 incubated with l- and d-norvaline and l- and d-norleucine indicated that only the d-configured amino acids were incorporated into the natural products. Subsequently, jadomycin DNV and jadomycin DNL were isolated and characterized (titers 4 and 9 mg L -1, respectively). The compounds were evaluated in the National Cancer Institute cell line cancer growth inhibition and cytotoxicity screens, for antimicrobial activity against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and as DNA-cleavage agents in vitro. \ua9 Published 2011 by the American Chemical Society.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye
