Five-loop \sqrt\epsilon-expansions for random Ising model and marginal spin dimensionality for cubic systems
The \sqrt\epsilon-expansions for critical exponents of the weakly-disordered
Ising model are calculated up to the five-loop order and found to possess
coefficients with irregular signs and values. The estimate n_c = 2.855 for the
marginal spin dimensionality of the cubic model is obtained by the Pade-Borel

QuaSI: Quantile Sparse Image Prior for Spatio-Temporal Denoising of Retinal OCT Data
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution and non-invasive
3D imaging of the human retina but is inherently impaired by speckle noise.
This paper introduces a spatio-temporal denoising algorithm for OCT data on a
B-scan level using a novel quantile sparse image (QuaSI) prior. To remove
speckle noise while preserving image structures of diagnostic relevance, we
implement our QuaSI prior via median filter regularization coupled with a Huber
data fidelity model in a variational approach. For efficient energy
minimization, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)
scheme using a linearization of median filtering. Our spatio-temporal method
can handle both, denoising of single B-scans and temporally consecutive
B-scans, to gain volumetric OCT data with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio. Our
algorithm based on 4 B-scans only achieved comparable performance to averaging
13 B-scans and outperformed other current denoising methods.Comment: submitted to MICCAI'1
Amnion cells engineering: A new perspective in fetal membrane healing after intrauterine surgery?
In this study we aimed to set up an in vitro culture of the rabbit amnion in order to support in vivo fetal membrane healing capacity following fetoscopy. Fetal membranes were collected from a mid- gestational rabbit, and cultured on collagen support material for 14 days. 34 rabbits at 22 - 23 days gestational age ( GA) underwent fetoscopy. The entry site was randomly allocated to 4 closure technique study groups: group I, human amnion membrane ( n = 23); group II, collagen foil ( n = 16); group III, collagen plug ( n = 19), and group IV, collagen plug with cultured amnion cells ( n = 19). In all groups membrane access sites were additionally sealed with fibrin sealant, and the myometrium was closed with sutures. Fetal survival, amnion membrane integrity, and the presence of amniotic fluid were evaluated at 30 days GA. Cultures showed good survival in the collagen support material. Increased cellularity, survival and proliferations were observed. The amnion at the access site resealed in 58 - 64% of cases in groups II - IV, but none of the tested techniques was significantly better than the other. Histological examination indirectly revealed the anatomic repair of the membranes, since no entrapment of the membranes could be demonstrated in the myometrial wound. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Chaos and Quantum Chaos in Cosmological Models
Spatially homogeneous cosmological models reduce to Hamiltonian systems in a
low dimensional Minkowskian space moving on the total energy shell . Close
to the initial singularity some models (those of Bianchi type VIII and IX) can
be reduced further, in a certain approximation, to a non-compact triangular
billiard on a 2-dimensional space of constant negative curvature with a
separately conserved positive kinetic energy. This type of billiard has long
been known as a prototype chaotic dynamical system. These facts are reviewed
here together with some recent results on the energy level statistics of the
quantized billiard and with direct explicit semi-classical solutions of the
Hamiltonian cosmological model to which the billiard is an approximation. In
the case of Bianchi type IX models the latter solutions correspond to the
special boundary conditions of a `no-boundary state' as proposed by Hartle and
Hawking and of a `wormhole' state.Comment: 23 pages, Late
Numerical estimation of entropy loss on dimerization: improved prediction of the quaternary structure of the GCN4 leucine zipper
A lattice based model of a protein is used to study the dimerization
equilibrium of the GCN4 leucine zipper. Replica exchange Monte Carlo is used to
determine the free energy of both the monomeric and dimeric forms as a function
of temperature. The method of coincidences is then introduced to explicitly
calculate the entropy loss associated with dimerization, and from it the free
energy difference between monomer and dimer, as well as the corresponding
equilibrium reaction constant. We find that the entropy loss of dimerization is
a strong function of energy (or temperature), and that it is much larger than
previously estimated, especially for high energy states. The results confirm
that it is possible to study the dimerization equilibrium of GCN4 at
physiological concentrations within the reduced representation of the protein
employed
Direct Formation of Supermassive Black Holes via Multi-Scale Gas Inflows in Galaxy Mergers
Observations of distant bright quasars suggest that billion solar mass
supermassive black holes (SMBHs) were already in place less than a billion
years after the Big Bang. Models in which light black hole seeds form by the
collapse of primordial metal-free stars cannot explain their rapid appearance
due to inefficient gas accretion. Alternatively, these black holes may form by
direct collapse of gas at the center of protogalaxies. However, this requires
metal-free gas that does not cool efficiently and thus is not turned into
stars, in contrast with the rapid metal enrichment of protogalaxies. Here we
use a numerical simulation to show that mergers between massive protogalaxies
naturally produce the required central gas accumulation with no need to
suppress star formation. Merger-driven gas inflows produce an unstable, massive
nuclear gas disk. Within the disk a second gas inflow accumulates more than 100
million solar masses of gas in a sub-parsec scale cloud in one hundred thousand
years. The cloud undergoes gravitational collapse, which eventually leads to
the formation of a massive black hole. The black hole can grow to a billion
solar masses in less than a billion years by accreting gas from the surrounding

Does lending behaviour of banks in emerging economies vary by ownership? Evidence from the Indian banking sector
While much has been discussed about the relationship between ownership and financial performance of banks in emerging markets, literature about cross-ownership differences in credit market behaviour of banks in emerging economies is sparse. Using bank-level data from India, and a portfolio-choice model, for nine years (1995-96 to 2003-04), we examine banks’ behaviour in the context of emerging credit markets. Our results indicate that, in India, the data for the domestic banks fit well the aforementioned portfolio-choice model, especially for private banks, but the model cannot explain the behaviour of foreign banks. In general, allocation of assets between risk-free government securities and risky credit is affected by past allocation patterns, stock exchange listing (for private banks), risk averseness of banks, regulations regarding treatment of NPA, and ability of banks to recover doubtful credit. It is also evident that banks deal with changing levels of systematic risk by altering the ratio of securitized to non-securitized credit. These results have implications for disbursal of credit to small and medium enterprises in India
Forecasting in the light of Big Data
Predicting the future state of a system has always been a natural motivation
for science and practical applications. Such a topic, beyond its obvious
technical and societal relevance, is also interesting from a conceptual point
of view. This owes to the fact that forecasting lends itself to two equally
radical, yet opposite methodologies. A reductionist one, based on the first
principles, and the naive inductivist one, based only on data. This latter view
has recently gained some attention in response to the availability of
unprecedented amounts of data and increasingly sophisticated algorithmic
analytic techniques. The purpose of this note is to assess critically the role
of big data in reshaping the key aspects of forecasting and in particular the
claim that bigger data leads to better predictions. Drawing on the
representative example of weather forecasts we argue that this is not generally
the case. We conclude by suggesting that a clever and context-dependent
compromise between modelling and quantitative analysis stands out as the best
forecasting strategy, as anticipated nearly a century ago by Richardson and von
Neumann
The oral selective estrogen receptor degrader GDC-0810 (ARN-810) in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive HER2-negative (HR + /HER2 −) advanced/metastatic breast cancer

GDC-0810 (ARN-810) is a novel, non-steroidal, orally bioavailable, selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) that potentially inhibits ligand-dependent and ligand-independent estrogen receptor (ER)-mediated signaling.
Methods
A phase Ia/Ib/IIa dose escalation, combination treatment with palbociclib or a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, and expansion study determined the safety, pharmacokinetics, and recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D) of GDC-0810 in postmenopausal women with ER + (HER2 −) locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Baseline plasma ctDNA samples were analyzed to determine the ESR1 mutation status.
Results
Patients (N = 152) received GDC-0810 100–800 mg once daily (QD) or 300–400 mg twice daily, in dose escalation, expansion, as single agent or combination treatment. Common adverse events regardless of attribution to study drug were diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and constipation. There was one dose-limiting toxicity during dose escalation. The maximum tolerated dose was not reached. GDC-0810 600 mg QD taken with food was the RP2D. Pharmacokinetics were predictable. FES reduction (> 90%) highlighting pharmacodynamic engagement of ER was observed. Outcomes for the overall population and for patients with tumors harboring ESR1 mutations included partial responses (4% overall; 4% ESR1), stable disease (39% overall; 42% ESR1), non-complete response/non-progressive disease (13% overall; 12% ESR1), progressive disease (40% overall; 38% ESR1), and missing/unevaluable (5% overall; 5% ESR1). Clinical benefit (responses or SD, lasting ≥ 24 weeks) was observed in patients in dose escalation (n = 16, 39%) and expansion (n = 24, 22%).
Conclusion
GDC-0810 was safe and tolerable with preliminary anti-tumor activity in heavily pretreated patients with ER + advanced/MBC, with/without ESR1 mutations, highlighting the potential for oral SERDs.This work was supported by Genentech, Inc., South San Francisco, CA. and K.J. would like to acknowledge a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Support Grant (P30 CA008748)
