    Coherent charge transport through molecular wires: influence of strong Coulomb repulsion

    We derive a master equation for the electron transport through molecular wires in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion. This approach is applied to two typical situations: First, we study transport through an open conduction channel for which we find that the current exhibits an ohmic-like behaviour. Second, we explore the transport properties of a bridged molecular wire, where the current decays exponentially as a function of the wire length.     Carcasses of 115 Holstein steers were divided into lean, bone, internal cavity, hide, and fat tissues for analysis of P, Ca, K, Mg, and S retention. Every 28 days, five steers from each of two treatments, fed Zilmax for 20 days prior to harvest or not fed Zilmax, were harvested. There were no differences due to treatment or days on feed when mineral retention was expressed as g/100 g of protein gain.     Context. Thanks to recent large scale surveys in the near infrared such as 2MASS, the galactic plane that most suffers from extinction is revealed and its overall structure can be studied. Aims. This work aims at constraining the structure of the Milky Way external disc as seen in 2MASS data, and in particular the warp. Methods. We use the Two Micron All Sky Survey (hereafter 2MASS) along with the Stellar Population Synthesis Model of the Galaxy, developed in Besancon, to constrain the external disc parameters such as its scale length, its cutoff radius, and the slope of the warp. In order to properly interpret the observations, the simulated stars are reddened using a three dimensional extinction map. The shape of the stellar warp is then compared with previous results and with similar structures in gas and dust. Results. We find new constraints on the stellar disc, which is shown to be asymmetrical, similar to observations of HI. The positive longitude side is found to be easily modelled with a S shape warp but with a slope significantly smaller than the slope seen in the HI warp. At negative longitudes, the disc presents peculiarities which are not well reproduced by any simple model. Finally, comparing with the warp seen in the dust, it seems to follow a slope intermediate between the gas and the stars.Comment: 9 pages. Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Use of Rollover Protective Structures -- Iowa, Kentucky, New York, and Ohio, 1992-1997

    Agriculture has one of the highest occupational fatality rates of all industries in the United States (1). Tractors and other types of agricultural equipment account for a large proportion of these fatalities, and farm-tractor rollovers account for approximately 130 work-related deaths each year in the United States (2). Although rollover protective structures (ROPS) are effective in protecting tractor operators from fatal injuries during rollovers (3-5), most tractors in the United States are not equipped with ROPS (4-7). Beginning in 1985, tractor manufacturers in the United Sates agreed to sell only tractors with ROPS; however, many older tractors without ROPS remain in use. To determine the prevalence of the use of ROPS, beginning in 1992, the Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance (FFHHS) program * collected state-based data on tractor age and use of ROPS from selected states. As of August 1997, four states had completed collection and analysis of data on farm tractors. This report summarizes the results of that survey, which indicates that 80%-90% of tractors in use in the four states were manufactured before 1985 and that less than 40% are equipped with ROPS

    Assessment of Osteoporosis in Injured Older Women Admitted to a Safety-Net Level One Trauma Center: A Unique Opportunity to Fulfill an Unmet Need

    Background. Older trauma patients often undergo computed tomography (CT) as part of the initial work-up. CT imaging can also be used opportunistically to measure bone density and assess osteoporosis. Methods. In this retrospective cohort study, osteoporosis was ascertained from admission CT scans in women aged ≄65 admitted to the ICU for traumatic injury during a 3-year period at a single, safety-net, level 1 trauma center. Osteoporosis was defined by established CT-based criteria of average L1 vertebral body Hounsfield units <110. Evidence of diagnosis and/or treatment of osteoporosis was the primary outcome. Results. The study cohort consisted of 215 women over a 3-year study period, of which 101 (47%) had evidence of osteoporosis by CT scan criteria. There were no differences in injury severity score, hospital length of stay, cost, or discharge disposition between groups with and without evidence of osteoporosis. Only 55 (59%) of the 94 patients with osteoporosis who survived to discharge had a documented osteoporosis diagnosis and/or corresponding evaluation/treatment plan. Conclusion. Nearly half of older women admitted with traumatic injuries had underlying osteoporosis, but 41% had neither clinical recognition of this finding nor a treatment plan for osteoporosis. Admission for traumatic injury is an opportunity to assess osteoporosis, initiate appropriate intervention, and coordinate follow-up care. Trauma and acute care teams should consider assessment of osteoporosis in women who undergo CT imaging and provide a bridge to outpatient services

    SPARC is expressed in renal interstitial fibrosis and in renal vascular injury. Tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis are critical determinants for renal function and prognosis in a variety of human nephropathies. Yet, the pathophysiology of the injury remains obscure. We investigated the expression of SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine) by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization in experimental models characterized by tubulointerstitial fibrosis and matrix expansion in rats. SPARC is a secreted glycoprotein that has been demonstrated to affect cellular interaction with matrix proteins, modulate cell proliferation, bind to and/or inhibit growth factors such as PDGF and bFGF, and regulate angiogenesis. Interstitial expression of SPARC was most prominent in passive Heyman nephritis (PHN), chronic cyclosporine A (CsA) nephropathy, and the remnant kidney model and, to a lesser extent, in angiotensin II (Ang II)-infused animals. SPARC protein and mRNA were substantially increased at sites of tubulointerstitial fibrosis/matrix expansion. In the PHN model, SPARC protein was expressed by interstitial fibroblasts that also produced α-smooth muscle actin (“myofibroblasts”) and correlated both temporally (r = 0.97) and spatially with sites of type I collagen deposition. Interstitial cell proliferation preceded the development of interstitial fibrosis, and maximal SPARC expression (d15) coincided with the initial decline in interstitial proliferation. In the Ang II-infusion model, which is characterized by arteriolopathy and tubulointerstitial injury, an increase in SPARC protein and mRNA was also seen in injured blood vessels. SPARC was shown to be expressed by vascular smooth muscle cells and also by cells in the adventitia of hypertrophied arteries. In summary, SPARC was transiently expressed by interstitial fibroblasts at sites of tubulointerstitial injury and fibrosis, and by smooth muscle cells and cells in the adventitia of injured arteries in the Ang II-model. In addition to its proposed role in extracellular matrix deposition, the antiproliferative properties of SPARC might contribute to the resolution of interstitial fibroblast proliferation in the PHN model

    Uncovering treatment burden as a key concept for stroke care: a systematic review of qualitative research

    &lt;b&gt;Background&lt;/b&gt; Patients with chronic disease may experience complicated management plans requiring significant personal investment. This has been termed ‘treatment burden’ and has been associated with unfavourable outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the qualitative literature on treatment burden in stroke from the patient perspective.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;b&gt;Methods and findings&lt;/b&gt; The search strategy centred on: stroke, treatment burden, patient experience, and qualitative methods. We searched: Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO. We tracked references, footnotes, and citations. Restrictions included: English language, date of publication January 2000 until February 2013. Two reviewers independently carried out the following: paper screening, data extraction, and data analysis. Data were analysed using framework synthesis, as informed by Normalization Process Theory. Sixty-nine papers were included. Treatment burden includes: (1) making sense of stroke management and planning care, (2) interacting with others, (3) enacting management strategies, and (4) reflecting on management. Health care is fragmented, with poor communication between patient and health care providers. Patients report inadequate information provision. Inpatient care is unsatisfactory, with a perceived lack of empathy from professionals and a shortage of stimulating activities on the ward. Discharge services are poorly coordinated, and accessing health and social care in the community is difficult. The study has potential limitations because it was restricted to studies published in English only and data from low-income countries were scarce.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;b&gt;Conclusions&lt;/b&gt; Stroke management is extremely demanding for patients, and treatment burden is influenced by micro and macro organisation of health services. Knowledge deficits mean patients are ill equipped to organise their care and develop coping strategies, making adherence less likely. There is a need to transform the approach to care provision so that services are configured to prioritise patient needs rather than those of health care systems

    Low-frequency noise and tunnelling magnetoresistance in Fe(110)/MgO(111)/Fe(110) epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions

    We report on tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR), current-voltage (IV) characteristics and low frequency noise in epitaxially grown Fe(110)/MgO(111)/Fe(110) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with dimensions from 2x2 to 20x20 um2. The evaluated MgO energy barrier (0.50+/-0.08 eV), the barrier width (13.1+/-0.5 angstrom) as well as the resistance times area product (7+/-1 Mohmsum2) show relatively small variation, confirming a high quality epitaxy and uniformity of all MTJs studied. The noise power, though exhibiting large variation, was observed to be roughly anticorrelated with the TMR. Surprisingly, for the largest junctions we observed a strong enhancement of the normalized low-frequency noise in the antiparallel magnetic configuration.     Spatial Guilds in the Serengeti Food Web Revealed by a Bayesian Group Model

    Food webs, networks of feeding relationships among organisms, provide fundamental insights into mechanisms that determine ecosystem stability and persistence. Despite long-standing interest in the compartmental structure of food webs, past network analyses of food webs have been constrained by a standard definition of compartments, or modules, that requires many links within compartments and few links between them. Empirical analyses have been further limited by low-resolution data for primary producers. In this paper, we present a Bayesian computational method for identifying group structure in food webs using a flexible definition of a group that can describe both functional roles and standard compartments. The Serengeti ecosystem provides an opportunity to examine structure in a newly compiled food web that includes species-level resolution among plants, allowing us to address whether groups in the food web correspond to tightly-connected compartments or functional groups, and whether network structure reflects spatial or trophic organization, or a combination of the two. We have compiled the major mammalian and plant components of the Serengeti food web from published literature, and we infer its group structure using our method. We find that network structure corresponds to spatially distinct plant groups coupled at higher trophic levels by groups of herbivores, which are in turn coupled by carnivore groups. Thus the group structure of the Serengeti web represents a mixture of trophic guild structure and spatial patterns, in contrast to the standard compartments typically identified in ecological networks.
