    Digital Inclusion for Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

    The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a syndrome characterized by distraction, impulsivity, forgetfulness and disorganization. The diagnosis requires considerable care and experience. There are multiples approaches to treatments available, which can be used in combination to meet specific needs. In the academic field, virtual learning environment emerges as a watershed in the life and destiny of students who suffer from the disorder. The objective of this study is to promote digital inclusion for students with ADHD, through a virtual learning environment, in web platform, which will provide tools able to attract attention and stimulate interest in academic activities, aiming to generate significant changes in the process of student development

    Arrangement and prevalence of branches in the external carotid artery in humans

    The external carotid artery originates branches to face structures. The superior thyroid, lingual and facial arteries are originated from this vessel as artery trunks or separately. The aim of this study was to determinate the arrangement frequency of these artery branches. For this, thirty six (36) hemi-heads of adult cadavers from both genders were studied. The anatomic parts were fixed in 10% of formalin and dissected. The superior thyroid, lingual and facial arteries were analyzed in terms of their origins. The superior thyroid, lingual and facial arteries originated separately from the external or common carotid artery in 77.8% of the cases. A linguofacial trunk was observed in 19.9% of the cases and a thyrolingual trunk in 2.8%. A thyrolinguofacial trunk was not observed. In 51.2% cases the superior thyroid artery originated directly from the external carotid artery, in 45.3% from the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, and in 3.5% from the common carotid artery. Thus, the superior thyroid, lingual and facial arteries more frequently showed a separate origin from the external or common carotid artery. Among the combined artery trunks, the linguofacial trunk was most frequently observed, followed by the thyrolingual trunk. The superior thyroid artery originated more frequently from the external or common carotid artery; however, it also could emerge from the bifurcation of the common carotid artery

    Influence of seasonality on the quality of oysters from the Sado and Mira rivers

    There is a lack of knowledge about the influence of seasonality on the microbial and physicochemical quality of oysters in Sado and Mira rivers. Water, sediment, and oysters (Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas) were collected for microbiological, nutritional, and sensory analyses. The microbiological water quality and the oyster shell contamination were better during the warmer months. No seasonal effect was observed on sediments and on oyster meat. A good physicochemical and nutritional quality was also observed, with high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3 fatty acids, resulting in good lipid quality indices. From the sensory evaluation, both oysters' species were well scored and presented the highest scores (4) in parameters such as cream-ivory colour, sea smell, firmness and juiciness. These attributes denote the freshness degree at the time of the tasting, reflecting the quality of the bivalve

    Impacts of innovation, productivity and specialization on tourism competitiveness - a spatial econometric analysis on European regions

    Tourism is clearly a place-based activity, while in many advanced economies it is increasingly becoming a knowledge-based activity, with a high potential for the development of practice- and place-based innovation strategies. This study analyses whether and how regional systems of innovation influence the competiveness of tourism destinations in Europe. Impacts of both traditional production factors (physical and human capital), productivity, specialization and other contextual variables - related to the territorial capital of each region - on regional tourism performance of 237 European regions (NUTS 2) are analysed over a period of 8 years, using advanced techniques for spatial econometric analysis. The results reveal lower levels of productivity in those regions where tourism services are more labour intensive, while regions where education, innovation and productivity demonstrate higher levels are those where gross value added in tourism is less important for the regional economy. Policy implications are discussed, taking into consideration the principles for smart specialisation strategies in European regions and the possibility for cross-border regional cooperation.     A Rapid FACS-Based Strategy to Isolate Human Gene Knockin and Knockout Clones

    Gene targeting protocols for mammalian cells remain inefficient and labor intensive. Here we describe FASTarget, a rapid, fluorescent cell sorting based strategy to isolate rare gene targeting events in human somatic cells. A fluorescent protein is used as a means for direct selection of targeted clones obviating the need for selection and outgrowth of drug resistant clones. Importantly, the use of a promoter-less, ATG-less construct greatly facilitates the recovery of correctly targeted cells. Using this method we report successful gene targeting in up to 94% of recovered human somatic cell clones. We create functional EYFP-tagged knockin clones in both transformed and non-transformed human somatic cell lines providing a valuable tool for mammalian cell biology. We further demonstrate the use of this technology to create gene knockouts. Using this generally applicable strategy we can recover gene targeted clones within approximately one month from DNA construct delivery to obtaining targeted monoclonal cell lines

    Patterns and universals of mate poaching across 53 nations : the effects of sex, culture, and personality on romantically attracting another person’s partner

    As part of the International Sexuality Description Project, 16,954 participants from 53 nations were administered an anonymous survey about experiences with romantic attraction. Mate poaching--romantically attracting someone who is already in a relationship--was most common in Southern Europe, South America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and was relatively infrequent in Africa, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Evolutionary and social-role hypotheses received empirical support. Men were more likely than women to report having made and succumbed to short-term poaching across all regions, but differences between men and women were often smaller in more gender-egalitarian regions. People who try to steal another's mate possess similar personality traits across all regions, as do those who frequently receive and succumb to the poaching attempts by others. The authors conclude that human mate-poaching experiences are universally linked to sex, culture, and the robust influence of personal dispositions.peer-reviewe
