    Propagation of high-energy neutrinos in a background of ultralight scalar dark matter

    If high-energy neutrinos propagate in a background of ultralight scalar field particles of dark matter (mφ1023m_\varphi \sim 10^{-23}eV), neutrino-dark matter interactions can play a role and affect the neutrino flux. In this work we analyse this effect using transport equations that account for the neutrino regeneration as well as absorption, and we consider the neutrino flux propagation in the extragalactic medium and also through the galactic halo of dark matter. We show the results for the final flux to arrive on Earth for different cases of point and diffuse neutrino fluxes. {We conclude that this type of neutrino interactions with ultralight scalar particles as dark matter can yield very different results in the neutrino flux and in the flavor ratios that can be measured in neutrino detectors such as IceCube.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

    Direct transition to high-dimensional chaos through a global bifurcation

    In the present work we report on a genuine route by which a high-dimensional (with d>4) chaotic attractor is created directly, i.e., without a low-dimensional chaotic attractor as an intermediate step. The high-dimensional chaotic set is created in a heteroclinic global bifurcation that yields an infinite number of unstable tori.The mechanism is illustrated using a system constructed by coupling three Lorenz oscillators. So, the route presented here can be considered a prototype for high-dimensional chaotic behavior just as the Lorenz model is for low-dimensional chaos.Comment: 7 page

    Predicting diurnal variability of fine inorganic aerosols and their gas-phase precursors near downtown Mexico City

    International audiencePartitioning of semi-volatile nitrate and ammonium between the gas and particulate phases is studied combining two thermodynamic models that explicitly include crustal elements and simulate both branches (deliquescence, efflorescence) of aerosol behavior and measurements taken near downtown Mexico City during a field campaign conducted in February?March, 2005. Overall, no significant differences between model predictions (within 30% of error) are observed for particulate ammonium (PM2.5, PM1). In cases of moderate to high RH (40?70%), mostly occurring during the 1st and 2nd daily sampling periods (06:00?10:00 h, 10:00?14:00 h, LST), 4 h PM2.5 nitrate measurements are predicted within 30%. When RH drops below 30%, characteristic of the afternoon sampling periods (14:00-18:00 h), the efflorescence branch is most consistent with observed PM nitrate. Residual error analysis of these low RH cases suggest that aerosol nitrate loading or sulfate-to-nitrate molar ratio control phase behavior, hence the partitioning of semi-volatile PM2.5 nitrate in gas and particulate phases. Finally, inclusion of crustal elements in the modeling framework reduces the error in predicted PM2.5 ammonium by 25%. These findings, if generally applicable, can help improve air quality modeling in nitrate deficient environments

    Effect of a variable delay in delayed dynamical systems

    We report numerical evidence of the effects of a periodic modulation in the delay time of a delayed dynamical system. By referring to a Mackey-Glass equation and by adding a modula- tion in the delay time, we describe how the solution of the system passes from being chaotic to shadow periodic states. We analyze this transition for both sinusoidal and sawtooth wave mod- ulations, and we give, in the latter case, the relationship between the period of the shadowed orbit and the amplitude of the modulation. Future goals and open questions are highlighted

    El mercado laboral argentino en la posconvertibilidad (2003 - 2015): entre la crisis neoliberal y los límites estructurales de la economía

    The article proposes to study the evolution of the Argentine labor market in the post-convertibility period, as well as its main transformations. To do this, different variables are analyzed (employment, salary, employment relationship quality, and urban informal sector evolution), based on considering land rent and the productivity lag of the Argentine economy as the structural determinants of the accumulation process of Argentine capital. The results show a significant reversal of the trends that operated since the mid -1970s, particularly toward the 1990s, so that the latter period ended with substantially better levels. However, this recovery was stagnated in 2011-2012. From a long-term perspective, this shows a working population affected by a differentiation in their reproductive conditions, much deeper than those in the past.O artigo propõe estudar a evolução do mercado de trabalho argentino na pós-conversibilidade, bem como suas principais transformações. Para isso, analisam-se diferentes variáveis (emprego, salário, qualidade do vínculo empregatício, evolução do setor informal urbano), considerando a renda da terra e a defasagem de produtividade da economia argentina como determinantes estruturais do processo de acumulação de capital argentino. Os resultados mostram uma reversão significativa das tendências que operaram desde meados da década de 1970, particularmente até a década de 1990, de modo que o período fechou com níveis substancialmente melhores. No entanto, esta recuperação estagnou no período 2011-2012, que, a partir de uma perspetiva de longo prazo, mostra uma população trabalhadora atravessada por uma diferenciação nas suas condições de reprodução, muito mais profunda do que as que existiam no passado.El artículo se propone estudiar la evolución del mercado laboral argentino en la posconvertibilidad, así como sus principales transformaciones.     The Crystal Structure of Nitrosomonas Europaea Sucrose Synthase Reveals Critical Conformational Changes and Insights into the Sucrose Metabolism in Prokaryotes

    In this paper we report the first crystal structure of a prokaryotic sucrose synthase from the non-photosynthetic bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea. The obtained structure was in an open form, whereas the only other available structure from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana was in a closed conformation. Comparative structural analysis revealed a “hinge-latch” combination, which is critical to transition between the open and closed forms of the enzyme. The N. europaea sucrose synthase shares the same fold as the GT-B family of the retaining glycosyltransferases. In addition, a triad of conserved homologous catalytic residues in the family showed to be functionally critical in the N. europaea sucrose synthase (Arg567, Lys572, Glu663). This implies that sucrose synthase shares not only a common origin with the GT-B family, but also a similar catalytic mechanism. The enzyme preferred transferring glucose from ADP-glucose rather than UDP-glucose like the eukaryotic counterparts. This predicts that these prokaryotic organisms have a different sucrose metabolic scenario from plants.     Development of a critical structure state alarm system based on the instrumentation of the Botafoc breakwater nº 8 caisson

    Balearic Port Authority has developed an instrumentation system for the #8 caisson of the Botafoc breakwater that integrates 12 pressure sensors located at three surfaces, two in contact with the sea water and another with the bottom. This design was completed with an inertial system that measures the angular velocities and the accelerations over the three Cartesian axes. Consequently, the system measures actions (pressures) and reactions (movements and accelerations) experimented by the caisson, due to sea waves and/or other service loads. R+D department of the Port Authority and Polytechnic University of Madrid are working on two directions, the development of new theories on vertical breakwater design that go beyond Goda and Sainflou, and on the creation of a real-time critical structure alarm system, based on the instrumentation installed. This alarm system has two main parts: the instrumentation itself that collects data and processes it on real-time (the data processing compares the pressure law suffered by the caisson in every step process with the design critical state of the caisson, in this case the Goda pressure law for a 6.5 m wave), giving a security coefficient that points out the risk level on real-time; and the alarm system consisting of a monitoring panel located in the Port Control Center that shows the risk level and advises in case of an incidental evacuation of this critical portuary installation

    Phosphorylation of ADP-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase During Wheat Seeds Development

    Starch is the dominant reserve polysaccharide accumulated in the seed of grasses (like wheat). It is the most common carbohydrate in the human diet and a material applied to the bioplastics and biofuels industry. Hence, the complete understanding of starch metabolism is critical to design rational strategies to improve its allocation in plant reserve tissues. ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) catalyzes the key (regulated) step in the synthetic starch pathway. The enzyme comprises a small (S) and a large (L) subunit forming an S2L2 heterotetramer, which is allosterically regulated by orthophosphate, fructose-6P, and 3P-glycerate. ADP-Glc PPase was found in a phosphorylated state in extracts from wheat seeds. The amount of the phosphorylated protein increased along with the development of the seed and correlated with relative increases of the enzyme activity and starch content. Conversely, this post-translational modification was absent in seeds from Ricinus communis. In vitro, the recombinant ADP-Glc PPase from wheat endosperm was phosphorylated by wheat seed extracts as well as by recombinant Ca2+-dependent plant protein kinases. Further analysis showed that the preferential phosphorylation takes place on the L subunit. Results suggest that the ADP-Glc PPase is a phosphorylation target in seeds from grasses but not from oleaginous plants. Accompanying seed maturation and starch accumulation, a combined regulation of ADP-Glc PPase by metabolites and phosphorylation may provide an enzyme with stable levels of activity. Such concerted modulation would drive carbon skeletons to the synthesis of starch for its long-term storage, which later support seed germination.Fil: Ferrero, Danisa María Luján.     Rare Events and Scale--Invariant Dynamics of Perturbations in Delayed Dynamical Systems

    We study the dynamics of perturbations in time delayed dynamical systems. Using a suitable space-time coordinate transformation, we find that the time evolution of the linearized perturbations (Lyapunov vector) can be mapped to the linear Zhang surface growth model [Y.-C. Zhang, J. Phys. France {\bf 51}, 2129 (1990)], which is known to describe surface roughening driven by power-law distributed noise. As a consequence, Lyapunov vector dynamics is dominated by rare random events that lead to non-Gaussian fluctuations and multiscaling properties.Comment: Final version to appear in Phys. Rev.
