    Seawater intrusion and coastal groundwater resources management. Examples from two Mediterranean regions: Catalonia and Sardinia

    Seawater intrusion is a natural phenomenon that allows the encroachment of saline water into aquifers. Nevertheless, many human actions along the coastline, in particular groundwater withdrawal, enhance this process and finally cause the salinization of groundwater resources. Here we review the hydrogeological basis of seawater intrusion and describe specific cases in Catalonia and Sardinia, as examples of environmental problems and water management actions. We emphasize the origin of salinization and the hydrogeological details of each case, as well as the solutions that have been implemented to prevent groundwater salinization

    El efecto del cambio climático en los recursos de agua subterránea es complejo y modifica cada uno de los componentes del ciclo hidrológico. Por esta razón, la variabilidad del balance hídrico debida al cambio climático debe incluirse en la planificación futura de los recursos hídricos. Sin embargo, esta tarea no es simple dado que se debe considerar 1) las fuentes de incertidumbre de las proyecciones climáticas, 2) determinados problemas de escala para adaptar los resultados de estas proyecciones a las necesidades precisas de los estudios hidrogeológicos, y 3) los requerimientos metodológicos para representar las variaciones de los componentes del ciclo hidrológico en los modelos de flujo subterráneo. En esta ponencia se abordan estos tres aspectos concretos con el objetivo de ilustrar la complejidad de las simulaciones de disponibilidad futura de recursos hidrogeológicos.Climate change effects on water resources are complex as they modify each of the hydrological cycle components. Given its occurrence, the variability of the water balance due to climate change must be included in all future efforts of water resources planning. However, this task must consider: 1) the sources of uncertainty of climate projections, 2) specific scale problems to adapt climate projections to the needs of the hydrogeological studies, and 3) some methodological requirements for groundwater flow models to deal with climate change effects. This contribution explores all this three aspects with the aim to point out the complexity of future groundwater availability assessment.Universidad Nacional de La Plat
