The avalanche of la Tartera de la Pica (Andorra)

The great extension of the avalanche path of "la tartera de la Pica" was identified during a systematic avalanche cartography in Andorra (Pyrenees). There are witnesses who, around 1930, saw the avalanche going down around 1200 m (vertical drop) and reaching a zone that, at present, is included in the city of Andorra la Vella and have a dense settlement. The altitude (2295 m at the top of the path), the aspect (SE) and the information about the meteorological characteristics of this zone suggest that, while the long return period extreme avalanches can reach the inhabited area, in general there are not avalanches in this path or they are very small. As a consequence, the population do not have a sense of danger and there is not any prevention or protection measure or control against this avalanche. In this paper we present the study of this avalanche path. The aim of this work is to characterise the extreme avalanches in order to protect this area of high vulnerability. The results of the present study come from the comparison and combination of different techniques and methods: expert criteria, photointerpretation, application of a statistic model and a dynamic model and use of ancient photographs from historical archives

Several researches with different methodologies about sportman's psychological characteristics have been realized around the years by sport psychologists. But only some sport psychologists have pointed out information of persons who are training sportsmen. This study shows qualitative methodology (based in content analysis) about psychological variables that are considered relevant by coaches to obtain sports performance in basketball players

Updated approaches for management of uterine fibroids.

Uterine anatomy and uterine fibroids (UFs) characteristics have been classically considered as almost a unique issue in gynecology and reproductive medicine. Nowadays, the management of UF pathology is undergoing an important evolution, with the patient’s quality of life being the most important aspect to consider. Accordingly, surgical techniques and aggressive treatments are reserved for only those cases with heavy symptomatology, while the clinical diagnostic based on size and number of UFs remains in a second plane in these situations. Moreover, the development of several noninvasive surgical techniques, especially the appearance of ulipristal acetate as a medical etiological treatment, has substantially changed the clinical indications. As a consequence, after almost 2 decades without relevant updates, it has been necessary to update the protocols for the management of UFs in the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics twice. Accordingly, we believe that it is necessary to translate our experience to protocolize the medical care for patients with UFs, incorporating these new therapeutic options, and selecting the best treatment for them. We highlight the importance of achieving the patient’s goals and decisions by improving the clinical diagnosis for these type of pathologies, allowing enhanced personalized treatments, as well as the reduction of potential risks and unnecessary surgeries.post-print366 K

Improving Distributed Decision Making in Inventory Management: A Combined ABC-AHP Approach Supported by Teamwork

[EN] The need of organizations to ensure service levels that impact on customer satisfaction has required the design of collaborative processes among stakeholders involved in inventory decision making. The increase of quantity and variety of items, on the one hand, and demand and customer expectations, on the other hand, are transformed into a greater complexity in inventory management, requiring effective communication and agreements between the leaders of the logistics processes. Traditionally, decision making in inventory management was based on approaches conditioned only by cost or sales volume. These approaches must be overcome by others that consider multiple criteria, involving several areas of the companies and taking into account the opinions of the stakeholders involved in these decisions. Inventory management becomes part of a complex system that involves stakeholders from different areas of the company, where each agent has limited information and where the cooperation between such agents is key for the system's performance. In this paper, a distributed inventory control approach was used with the decisions allowing communication between the stakeholders and with a multicriteria group decision-making perspective. This work proposes a methodology that combines the analysis of the value chain and the AHP technique, in order to improve communication and the performance of the areas related to inventory management decision making. This methodology uses the areas of the value chain as a theoretical framework to identify the criteria necessary for the application of the AHP multicriteria group decision-making technique. These criteria were defined as indicators that measure the performance of the areas of the value chain related to inventory management and were used to classify ABC inventory of the products according to these selected criteria. Therefore, the methodology allows us to solve inventory management DDM based on multicriteria ABC classification and was validated in a Colombian company belonging to the graphic arts sector.Pérez Vergara, IG.; Arias Sánchez, JA.; Poveda Bautista, R.; Diego-Mas, JA. Consistencia y fluctuación de los estados de ánimo en un equipo de fútbol profesional durante una competición de play off

The purpose of this paper is to describe a football team's mood processes during competitions through the administration of specific measures. A second division (level B) Spanish football team (Rayo Vallecano SAD, Madrid, Spain) was evaluated by means of the short Spanish version (15 items, Fuentes, García-Merita, Meliá and Balaguer, 1995) of the Profile of Mood State (POMS, MacNair, Lorr and Droppelmann, 1971), four times during the play-off phase (after the end of the regular season) to move on to a higher level during the 2006-07 Spanish Professional Soccer League season (level 2A). The results showed the absence of significant differences in the scores on the POMS' five scales (Depression, Vigour, Anger, Fatigue and Tension) recorded before the four play-off matches, meaning the existence of a consistency in the team's mood states during the whole phase of the play-off and the absence of significant fluctuations in mood mediumlasting processes. Despite that, the POMS' graphic averages displayed several patterns related to different scales. We suggest that the proposed method is useful in studying athletes' and teams' cognitive-emotional processes during specific types of ongoing competitions, as they ensure high ecological validity and provide information for more effective interventions tailor-made for teams

Developing a Framework for the Study of Performing Arts Programs for Other-than-artistic Purposes in Conflict Settings

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the process of developing a new framework combining ideas from Community Music (Howell, 2018), Social Psychology (Pettigrew, 1998; Odena, 2018) and Peace Studies (Cabedo-Mas, 2015), aimed at providing a tool for researchers wishing to systematically examine Performing Arts programs for other-than-artistic purposes in conflict settings. The framework could also be a tool for organizers and practitioners wishing to reflect on their work and to position it within the wider conflict recovery context. The process of framework development is ongoing, and is part of the activities of a new network including members from Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and the UK, supported by the AHRC and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2019-2021) and informed by an international Advisory group. The second part of the paper shares the network’s planned activities and selected aspects of a recent doctorate by one of its members (Rodríguez-Sánchez, 2019). Once the framework is developed, we will consider its illuminating potential within the intercultural, political and socioeconomic complexity of conflict settings
