Background Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) has been associated with cancer aggressiveness, but studies focused on specific tumors are lacking. In this pilot study we investigated whether SDB is associated with breast cancer (BC) aggressiveness. Methods 83 consecutive women <65 years diagnosed with primary BC underwent a home respiratory polygraphy. Markers of SDB severity included the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and the 4% oxygen desaturation index (ODI4). The Ki67 proliferation index, lack of hormone receptors (HR-), Nottingham Histological Grade (NHG), and tumor stage were used as markers of BC aggressiveness. The association between SDB and molecular subtypes of BC was also assessed. Results The mean (SD) age was 48.8 (8.8) years and body mass index was 27.4 (5.4) Kg/m2. 42 women (50.6%) were post-menopausal. The median (IQR) AHI was 5.1 (2–9.4), and ODI4 was 1.5 (0.5–5.8). The median (IQR) AHI did not differ between the groups with Ki67>28% and Ki6728% and Ki67<29% (51.2% vs 52.3%, p = 0.90), HR- and HR+ (58.3% vs 49.1%, p = 0.47), NHG categories (p = 0.89), different tumor stages (p = 0.71), or molecular subtypes (p = 0.73). These results did not change when the ODI4 was used instead of the AHI. Conclusion Our results do not support an association between the presence or severity of SDB and BC aggressiveness.Asociación de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica del Sur (NEUMOSUR) 1/201

Semen changes the gene expression in endometrial and oviductal tissues modulating important processes for reproduction. We tested the hypothesis that mating and/or sperm-free seminal plasma deposition in the reproductive tract affect the expression of genes associated with sperm-lining epithelium interactions, ovulation, and pre-implantation effects (nerve growth factor, NGF; α/β hydrolase domain-containing protein 2, ABHD2; C-terminal tensin-like protein, CTEN or TNS4; and versican, VCAN) in the period 10-72 h post-mating. In Experiment 1, does (n = 9) were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (control), GnRH-stimulated, and vaginally infused with sperm-free seminal plasma (SP-AI), or GnRH-stimulated and naturally mated (NM). In Experiment 2, does (n = 15) were GnRH-stimulated and naturally mated. Samples were retrieved from the internal reproductive tracts (cervix-to-infundibulum) 20 h post-treatment (Experiment 1) or sequentially collected at 10, 24, 36, 68, or 72 h post-mating (Experiment 2, 3 does/period). All samples were processed for gene expression analysis by quantitative PCR. Data showed an upregulation of endometrial CTEN and NGF by NM, but not by SP-AI. The findings suggest that the NGF gene affects the reproductive tract of the doe during ovulation and beyond, influencing the maternal environment during early embryonic development

Improved thermal management in HKUST-1 composites upon graphite flakes incorporation: Hydrogen adsorption properties

    Get PDF
HKUST-1-based composites have been synthesized through the incorporation of synthetic graphite flakes in the MOF synthesis media. The presence of flakes gives rise to high quality HKUST-1 crystals, combining different morphologies (octahedral-shape crystals, cauliflower-shape crystals and truncated pyramids). The incorporation of graphite in the composites improves the structural stability of the embedded nanocrystals upon a conforming step at 377 kg/cm2 (0.5 tons), with limited structural damage (below 10% BET surface area reduction as compared to the 40% observed for pure HKUST-1). Furthermore, composites exhibit a significant improvement in thermal management, associated with the excellent thermal and electrical properties of the graphite microdomains incorporated. The improved stability of the composites is also reflected in the adsorption performance for hydrogen at atmospheric pressure and cryogenic temperatures, with a significant preservation of the adsorption properties (gravimetric capacity, <15% decrease vs powders) in the monoliths containing graphite. The best adsorption performance is achieved with sample HKUST-1@10GF, in monolithic form, with a volumetric excess uptake at 0.1 MPa and −195 °C close to 18.7 g/L. This value is among the best described in the literature for monolithic MOFs under similar adsorption conditions.Authors would like to acknowledge financial support from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Project PID2019-108453GB-C21), Conselleria de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital, Generalitat Valenciana (project CIPROM/2021/022) and European Union: Horizon Europe (project MOST-H2; Grant agreement no. 101058547). Hybrid organometallo-silica catalysts for sustainable visible-light promoted olefin isomerization

The use of visible light as a clean and affordable reagent has turned photocatalysis into a green and powerful tool in synthetic chemistry. However, most of these photocatalytic processes are carried out under homogeneous conditions, which requires expensive catalysts that are difficult to recover and recycle. One way to overcome this problem is to incorporate the visible-active species into porous solid matrices. However, integrating these active species into the matrix to achieve a stable and active heterogeneous photocatalyst is not easy, and has usually been done by post-synthetic strategies. Herein, we describe the use of the highly emissive cyclometalated complex [Ir(dfppy)2(dasipy)]PF6 as a building block for the in-situ synthesis of four different silica-based heterogeneous photocatalysts, and a related post-synthetic grafted material. These highly stable materials have been assessed in the energy transfer photo-isomerization reaction of trans- to cis-stilbene under blue light and mild conditions; showing not only high isomerization yields (ca. 80 %), but also easy recovery and excellent recyclability (up to 100 % after 7 cycles). This work was supported by the Spanish MCIN/AIE/10.13039/501100011033, the ‘‘ERDF A way of making Europe’’, the ‘‘European Union’’ (projects PID2019-109742GB-I00 and PID2021-128761OB-C21), Gobierno de la Rioja (Project FORTALECE 2021/01) and Generalitat Valenciana (Regional Project AICO/2021/037 - Conselleria d’Innovació, Universitats, Ciència i Societat Digital)

¿Ha sido estable el crecimiento en América Latina?

In this paper, we characterize economic growth among a sample of Latin American countries by means of two panel stationarity tests: those of Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005) and Hadri and Rao (2008). The latter has a number of advantages compared to the first, in that it allows us to control (i) non-observed heterogeneity, both in its form and dates of possible structural breaks in the tendency function; (ii) the cross-section dependency among the units with panel bootstrap methods; and (iii) serial correlation in the errors. Our results show that economic growth in most Latin American countries has slowed significantly following structural breaks. The main implication of this finding is the inability of countries to recover from negative impacts and thus return to the original path of balanced growth.
