    Multiplicative local linear hazard estimation and best one-sided cross-validation

    This paper develops detailed mathematical statistical theory of a new class of cross-validation techniques of local linear kernel hazards and their multiplicative bias corrections. The new class of cross-validation combines principles of local information and recent advances in indirect cross-validation. A few applications of cross-validating multiplicative kernel hazard estimation do exist in the literature. However, detailed mathematical statistical theory and small sample performance are introduced via this paper and further upgraded to our new class of best one-sided cross-validation. Best one-sided cross-validation turns out to have excellent performance in its practical illustrations, in its small sample performance and in its mathematical statistical theoretical performance

    Temporal analysis of natural radionuclides deposition at Málaga(2005-2016)

    Atmospheric deposition of radionuclides has been investigated in many studies from the aspects of both radiation protection and geochemistry. The present study, carried out in the city of Málaga, in the southeast of Spain, focuses on the assessment of the bulk depositional fluxes of three natural radionuclides: 7Be (cosmogenic origin), and 210Pb and 40K (crustal origin). These three radionuclides are useful markers of particles arising from their respective sources. To obtain fundamental information of atmospheric transportation, sedimentation and geological process of particulate matter, a long-term monitoring of atmospheric deposition has been carried out in Málaga from January 2005-December 2016. Samples of bulk deposition were collected on a monthly basis on a stainless steel tray from January 2005 to December 2016. Afterwards, a volume of 6 L of the bulk deposition was reduced via evaporation to 1 L approximately and transferred to a Marinelli geometry container for gamma counting. Additionally, aerosols samples were collected weekly in cellulose membrane filters of 0.8μm pore size and 47mm diameter with an air sampler lodged in an all-weather sampling station, situated on the roof near the bulk rain collector. Gamma counting of the aerosols and bulk deposition samples was performed using an intrinsic germanium coaxial detector, Re-Ge-type (CANBERRA). This study describes the results and then discusses characteristics of atmospheric deposition of mentioned radionuclides with respect to seasonal variations and dependency on controlling factors. The depositional fluxes of all radionuclides showed a clear seasonal trend with summer minimum and high values in wintertime

    Constraints on unparticle physics from the gttˉgt\bar t anomalous coupling

    We study the impact of unparticle physics to the chromomagnetic dipole moment (CMDM) of the top quark. We compute the effect induced by unparticle operators of scalar and vector nature coupled to fermions on the CMDM. We find that this dipole moment is sensitive to the scale dimensions dud_u of the unparticle and the new couplings of the respective effective operators. Using the bounds imposed on the CMDM by low-energy precision and Tevatron measurements we derive indirect limits on the unparticle parameter space. In particular, we find that the scalar-unparticle operator contribution fulfills both constraints for most of the unparticle parameter space, while the low-energy precision bound on the CMDM excludes a vector-unparticle contribution for low values of respective scale dimension dud_u.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Impact of an intermittent and localized cooling intervention on skin temperature, sleep quality and energy expenditure in free-living, young, healthy adults

    Where people live and work together it is not always possible to modify the ambient temperature; ways must therefore be found that allow individuals to feel thermally comfortable in such settings. The Embr Wave (R) is a wrist-worn device marketed as a 'personal thermostat' that can apply a local cooling stimulus to the skin. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of an intermittent mild cold stimulus of 25 degrees C for 15-20 s every 5 min over 3.5 days under free-living conditions on 1) skin temperature, 2) perception of skin temperature, 3) sleep quality and 4) resting energy expenditure (REE) in young, healthy adults. Ten subjects wore the device for 3.5 consecutive days. This intervention reduced distal skin temperature after correcting for personal ambient temperature (P = 0.051).     The Evolutionary Success of the Marine Bacterium SAR11 Analyzed through a Metagenomic Perspective

    The SAR11 clade of Alphaproteobacteria is the most abundant group of planktonic cells in the near-surface epipelagic waters of the ocean, but the mechanisms underlying its exceptional success have not been fully elucidated. Here, we applied a metagenomic approach to explore microdiversity patterns by measuring the accumulation of synonymous and nonsynonymous mutations as well as homologous recombination in populations of SAR11 from different aquatic habitats (marine epipelagic, bathypelagic, and surface freshwater). The patterns of mutation accumulation and recombination were compared to those of other groups of representative marine microbes with multiple ecological strategies that share the same marine habitat, namely, Cyanobacteria (Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus), Archaea (“Candidatus Nitrosopelagicus” and Marine Group II Thalassoarchaea), and some heterotrophic marine bacteria (Alteromonas and Erythrobacter). SAR11 populations showed widespread recombination among distantly related members, preventing divergence leading to a genetically stable population. Moreover, their high intrapopulation sequence diversity with an enrichment in synonymous replacements supports the idea of a very ancient divergence and the coexistence of multiple different clones. However, other microbes analyzed seem to follow different evolutionary dynamics where processes of diversification driven by geographic and ecological instability produce a higher number of nonsynonymous replacements and lower intrapopulation sequence diversity. Together, these data shed light on some of the evolutionary and ecological processes that lead to the large genomic diversity in SAR11.     Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR

    The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes

    Crossover in the nature of the metallic phases in the perovskite-type RNiO_3

    We have measured the photoemission spectra of Nd1x_{1-x}Smx_{x}NiO3_{3}, where the metal-insulator transition and the N\'{e}el ordering occur at the same temperature for x0.4x \lesssim 0.4 and the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMIT_{MI}) is higher than the N\'{e}el temperature for x0.4x \gtrsim 0.4. For x0.4x \le 0.4, the spectral intensity at the Fermi level is high in the metallic phase above TMIT_{MI} and gradually decreases with cooling in the insulating phase below TMIT_{MI} while for x>0.4x > 0.4 it shows a pseudogap-like behavior above TMIT_{MI} and further diminishes below TMIT_{MI}. The results clearly establish that there is a sharp change in the nature of the electronic correlations in the middle (x0.4x \sim 0.4) of the metallic phase of the RRNiO3_3 system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure, submitted to Phys.     Atmospheric deposition fluxes of aluminium, iron and trace metals in a coastal station on the NW-Alboran Sea, (W-Mediterranean)

    El estudio se ha realizado en el marco del Proyecto del Plan Nacional con ref. CTM12-37598-C02The atmospheric deposition over the whole Mediterranean is poorly constrained and hinders a clear assessment of the extent to which atmospheric elements of various anthropogenic and natural origins affect its biogeochemistry. Available data show poor spatial representation, as most of the deposition data refer to the northwestern zone. The Alboran Sea, in particular, is a very interesting case study as regards the atmospheric input because the atmospheric chemistry is dominated by antagonistic influences of natural (mainly from the Sahara) and human activity due to the relative proximity of land-based sources and densely populated shores. The biogeochemical impact of desert dust also remains a matter of discussion regarding its contribution for different major and minor elements to terrestrial and marine systems and especially its potential fertilizing role by supplying micronutrients as iron. Atmospheric fluxes of various trace metals were measured in order to evaluate the presence of these elements in their differently bio-available forms, contents in the soluble and non-soluble fractions were determined. Sampling presented for this study was performed in Malaga (southeast of Spain, 36° 43′ 40″ N; 4° 28′ 8″ W) in an open bulk deposition collector placed 10 m above the ground. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model was used to calculate the backward trajectories of air masses reaching the study region.Universidad de Málaga.     Crecimiento de las tilapias oreochromis niloticus en cultivo monosexual y ambos sexos, en sistemas de producción semi – intensivos

    Target. To compare the population parameters of Oreochromis niloticus tilapias grown in Monosexual and Both-sex cultures in semi-intensive production systems. Materials and methods. To determine which treatment obtained the highest growth, physical-chemical factors (Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature) and population parameters (Accumulated Growth, Survival and Feed Conversion Factor) were taken. Collecting these data for 25 days where the Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus had an initial weight of 77.43gr in both treatments. Results. According to the results obtained in the experiment, the monosexual treatment acquired a final growth of 135.42gr, obtaining an average of 57.99 gr, while the treatment of both sexes reached a final growth of 112.73gr, achieving an average of 35.3 gr. Conclution. The monosexual treatment gained greater size and biomass in less time since they only dedicated themselves to feeding, on the other hand in the treatment of both sexes they gained little biomass since the ingested food was used for the preparation of sexual maturation and thus enter the reproductive stage, which decreased its growth rate, when applying the statistical analysis it was found that p>0.05 alleging that the growth of Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus is greater when only males are cultivated.  Objetivo. Comparar los parámetros poblacionales de las tilapias Oreochromis niloticus que crecen en cultivos Monosexuales y Ambos sexos en sistemas de producción semi-intensivos. Materiales y Métodos. Para determinar que tratamiento obtuvo mayor crecimiento se realizó la toma de factores físico-químicos (Oxígeno Disuelto, Temperatura) y parámetros poblacionales (Crecimiento Acumulado, Sobrevivencia y Factor de Conversión Alimenticia). Recolectando estos datos durante 25 días donde las Tilapias Oreochromis niloticus tuvieron un peso inicial de 77.43gr en ambos tratamientos. Resultados. Según los resultados obtenidos en el experimento, el tratamiento monosexual adquirió un crecimiento final de 135.42gr obteniendo como promedio 57.99 gr en cambio el tratamiento de ambos sexos alcanzó un crecimiento final de 112.73gr logrando un promedio de 35.3 gr. Conclusión. El tratamiento monosexual gano mayor tamaño y biomasa en menor tiempo dado que estos solamente se dedicaron  a alimentarse, en cambio en el tratamiento de ambos sexos gano poca biomasa ya que el alimento ingerido lo ocuparon para la preparación de la maduración sexual y así entrar a la etapa de reproducción, lo que disminuyo su velocidad de crecimiento, al aplicar los análisis estadísticos se encontró que p>0.05 alegando que el crecimiento de las Tilapias Oreochromis niloticus es mayor cuando solo se cultivan machos
