Successive minima of toric height functions
Given a toric metrized R-divisor on a toric variety over a global field, we
give a formula for the essential minimum of the associated height function.
Under suitable positivity conditions, we also give formulae for all the
successive minima. We apply these results to the study, in the toric setting,
of the relation between the successive minima and other arithmetic invariants
like the height and the arithmetic volume. We also apply our formulae to
compute the successive minima for several families of examples, including
weighted projective spaces, toric bundles and translates of subtori.Comment: To appear in Annales de l'Institut Fourier (Grenoble), 40 pages, 5

Selective and efficient quantum process tomography in arbitrary finite dimension
The characterization of quantum processes is a key tool in quantum information processing tasks for several reasons: on one hand, it allows one to acknowledge errors in the implementations of quantum algorithms; on the other, it allows one to characterize unknown processes occurring in nature. Bendersky, Pastawski, and Paz [A. Bendersky, F. Pastawski, and J. P. Paz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 190403 (2008)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.100.190403; Phys. Rev. A 80, 032116 (2009)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.80.032116] introduced a method to selectively and efficiently measure any given coefficient from the matrix description of a quantum channel. However, this method heavily relies on the construction of maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), which are known to exist only when the dimension of the Hilbert space is the power of a prime number. In this article, we lift the requirement on the dimension by presenting two variations of the method that work on arbitrary finite dimensions: one uses tensor products of maximal sets of MUBs, and the other uses a dimensional cutoff of a higher prime power dimension.Fil: Perito, Ignacio. A security analysis of email communications
The objective of this report is to analyse the security and privacy risks of email communications and identify
technical countermeasures capable of mitigating them effectively. In order to do so, the report analyses from a
technical point of view the core set of communication protocols and standards that support email
communications in order to identify and understand the existing security and privacy vulnerabilities. On the basis
of this analysis, the report identifies and analyses technical countermeasures, in the form of newer standards,
protocols and tools, aimed at ensuring a better protection of the security and privacy of email communications.
The practical implementation of each countermeasure is evaluated in order to understand its limitations and
identify potential technical and organisational constrains that could limit its effectiveness in practice. The outcome
of the above mentioned analysis is a set of recommendations regarding technical and organisational measures that
when combined properly have the potential of more effectively mitigating the privacy and security risks of today's
email communications.JRC.G.6-Digital Citizen Securit
Robustness and Explainability of Artificial Intelligence
In the light of the recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the serious negative consequences of its use for EU citizens and organisations have led to multiple initiatives from the European Commission to set up the principles of a trustworthy and secure AI. Among the identified requirements, the concepts of robustness and explainability of AI systems have emerged as key elements for a future regulation of this technology.
This Technical Report by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) aims to contribute to this movement for the establishment of a sound regulatory framework for AI, by making the connection between the principles embodied in current regulations regarding to the cybersecurity of digital systems and the protection of data, the policy activities concerning AI, and the technical discussions within the scientific community of AI, in particular in the field of machine learning, that is largely at the origin of the recent advancements of this technology.
The individual objectives of this report are to provide a policy-oriented description of the current perspectives of AI and its implications in society, an objective view on the current landscape of AI, focusing of the aspects of robustness and explainability. This also include a technical discussion of the current risks associated with AI in terms of security, safety, and data protection, and a presentation of the scientific solutions that are currently under active development in the AI community to mitigate these risks.
This report puts forward several policy-related considerations for the attention of policy makers to establish a set of standardisation and certification tools for AI. First, the development of methodologies to evaluate the impacts of AI on society, built on the model of the Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) introduced in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is discussed. Secondly, a focus is made on the establishment of methodologies to assess the robustness of systems that would be adapted to the context of use. This would come along with the identification of known vulnerabilities of AI systems, and the technical solutions that have been proposed in the scientific community to address them. Finally, the promotion of transparency systems in sensitive systems is discussed, through the implementation of explainability-by-design approaches in AI components that would provide guarantee of the respect of the fundamental rights.JRC.E.3-Cyber and Digital Citizens' Securit
Reproductive traits and floral visitors of Aechmea distichantha plants growing in different habitats of a South American xerophytic forest
Aechmea distichantha, a widely-distributed facultative epiphytic bromeliad species, is present from rainforests
to xerophytic forests. At its southernmost distribution (Humid Chaco) it grows in the understory and forest
edges. This animal-pollinated bromeliad shows high phenotypic plasticity on its vegetative traits, but there
is no information about plasticity on its reproductive traits. Infructescences from shade plants were heavier,
had longer rachis, more spikelets, higher number of fruits/spikelet and higher number of seeds/fruit than those
from sun plants, but they presented similar number of open flowers. The number of visitation events was
similar in both habitats, but more flowers were visited in the sun than in the shade. Flowers were visited by
seven species (six insects and one hummingbird). In the sun, the carpenter bee was the most frequent visitor
and visited almost all flowers, whereas in the shade different species of visitors attained similar proportion of
visits and number of visited flowers. Despite visitation events were similar in both habitats, plants growing
in the shade set more seeds/fruit than plants growing in the sun. The higher proportion of visits accomplished
by carpenter bees compared to hummingbirds is probably a consequence of the climatic conditions in the
austral location of these populations.
3D reconstruction of magnetization from dichroic soft X-ray transmission tomography
The development of magnetic nanostructures for applications in spintronics requires methods capable of visualizing their magnetization. Soft X‐ray magnetic imaging combined with circular magnetic dichroism allows nanostructures up to 100–300 nm in thickness to be probed with resolutions of 20–40 nm. Here a new iterative tomographic reconstruction method to extract the three‐dimensional magnetization configuration from tomographic projections is presented. The vector field is reconstructed by using a modified algebraic reconstruction approach based on solving a set of linear equations in an iterative manner. The application of this method is illustrated with two examples (magnetic nano‐disc and micro‐square heterostructure) along with comparison of error in reconstructions, and convergence of the algorithm
