    Electric solar wind sail applications overview

    We analyse the potential of the electric solar wind sail for solar system space missions. Applications studied include fly-by missions to terrestrial planets (Venus, Mars and Phobos, Mercury) and asteroids, missions based on non-Keplerian orbits (orbits that can be maintained only by applying continuous propulsive force), one-way boosting to outer solar system, off-Lagrange point space weather forecasting and low-cost impactor probes for added science value to other missions. We also discuss the generic idea of data clippers (returning large volumes of high resolution scientific data from distant targets packed in memory chips) and possible exploitation of asteroid resources. Possible orbits were estimated by orbit calculations assuming circular and coplanar orbits for planets. Some particular challenge areas requiring further research work and related to some more ambitious mission scenarios are also identified and discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ESTCube-1 special issue of Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Science

    CDNF rescues motor neurons in models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by targeting endoplasmic reticulum stress.

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons (MNs) in the spinal cord, brainstem, and motor cortex, leading to paralysis and eventually to death within 3 to 5 years of symptom onset. To date, no cure or effective therapy is available. The role of chronic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as a potential drug target, has received increasing attention. Here, we investigated the mode of action and therapeutic effect of the ER-resident protein cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) in three preclinical models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, exhibiting different disease development and etiology: (i) the conditional choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-tTA/TRE-hTDP43-M337V rat model previously described, (ii) the widely used SOD1-G93A mouse model, and (iii) a novel slow-progressive TDP43-M337V mouse model. To specifically analyse the ER stress response in MNs, we used three main methods: (i) primary culture of MNs derived from E13 days embryos, (ii) immunohistochemical analyses of spinal cord sections with ChAT as spinal MNs marker, and (iii) qPCR analyses of lumbar MNs isolated via laser microdissection. We show that intracerebroventricular administration of CDNF significantly halts the progression of the disease and improves motor behavior in TDP43-M337V and SOD1-G93A rodent models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. CDNF rescues motor neurons in vitro and in vivo from ER stress-associated cell death and its beneficial effect is independent of genetic disease etiology. Notably, CDNF regulates the unfolded protein response (UPR) initiated by transducers IRE1α, PERK, and ATF6, thereby enhancing MN survival. Thus, CDNF holds great promise for the design of new rational treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Coulomb drag propulsion experiments of ESTCube-2 and FORESAIL-1

    This paper presents two technology experiments – the plasma brake for deorbiting and the electric solar wind sail for interplanetary propulsion – on board the ESTCube-2 and FORESAIL-1 satellites. Since both technologies employ the Coulomb interaction between a charged tether and a plasma flow, they are commonly referred to as Coulomb drag propulsion. The plasma brake operates in the ionosphere, where a negatively charged tether deorbits a satellite. The electric sail operates in the solar wind, where a positively charged tether propels a spacecraft, while an electron emitter removes trapped electrons. Both satellites will be launched in low Earth orbit carrying nearly identical Coulomb drag propulsion experiments, with the main difference being that ESTCube-2 has an electron emitter and it can operate in the positive mode. While solar-wind sailing is not possible in low Earth orbit, ESTCube-2 will space-qualify the components necessary for future electric sail experiments in its authentic environment. The plasma brake can be used on a range of satellite mass classes and orbits. On nanosatellites, the plasma brake is an enabler of deorbiting – a 300-m-long tether fits within half a cubesat unit, and, when charged with -1 kV, can deorbit a 4.5-kg satellite from between a 700- and 500-km altitude in approximately 9–13 months.     Wear resistance of HVOF sprayed coatings from mechanically activated thermally synthesized Cr3C2–Ni spray powder

    In the current study a Cr3C2–Ni spray powder was produced by mechanically activated thermal synthesis. The following aspects were studied: (a) production and characteristics of spray powders, (b) spraying and characteristics of coatings by HVOF, and (c) abrasive wear resistance. A HVOF spray system Diamond Jet Hybrid 2700 (propane hybrid gun from Sulzer Metco) was used for deposition. Coating thickness was approximately 350–400 μm. The structure and composition of the coatings were determined by SEM and the phase composition by XRD methods. Coating surface hardness and microhardness in the cross-section were measured. Abrasive rubber-wheel wear (ARWW) and abrasive erosive wear (AEW) were tested. The wear resistance of the coatings produced from an experimental powder was comparable to that of a similar commercial one.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Interplanetary Student Nanospacecraft: Development of the LEO Demonstrator ESTCube-2

    Nanosatellites have established their importance in low-Earth orbit (LEO), and it is common for student teams to build them for educational and technology demonstration purposes. The next challenge is the technology maturity for deep-space missions. The LEO serves as a relevant environment for maturing the spacecraft design. Here we present the ESTCube-2 mission, which will be launched onboard VEGA-C VV23. The satellite was developed as a technology demonstrator for the future deep-space mission by the Estonian Student Satellite Program. The ultimate vision of the program is to use the electric solar wind sail (E-sail) technology in an interplanetary environment to traverse the solar system using lightweight propulsion means. Additional experiments were added to demonstrate all necessary technologies to use the E-sail payload onboard ESTCube-3, the next nanospacecraft targeting the lunar orbit. The E-sail demonstration requires a high-angular velocity spin-up to deploy a tether, resulting in a need for a custom satellite bus. In addition, the satellite includes deep-space prototypes: deployable structures; compact avionics stack electronics (including side panels); star tracker; reaction wheels; and cold–gas propulsion. During the development, two additional payloads were added to the design of ESTCube-2, one for Earth observation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the other for corrosion testing in the space of thin-film materials. The ESTCube-2 satellite has been finished and tested in time for delivery to the launcher. Eventually, the project proved highly complex, making the team lower its ambitions and optimize the development of electronics, software, and mechanical structure. The ESTCube-2 team dealt with budgetary constraints, student management problems during a pandemic, and issues in the documentation approach. Beyond management techniques, the project required leadership that kept the team aware of the big picture and willing to finish a complex satellite platform. The paper discusses the ESTCube-2 design and its development, highlights the team’s main technical, management, and leadership issues, and presents suggestions for nanosatellite and nanospacecraft developers

    Entamoeba histolytica cell movement: A central role for self-generated chemokines and chemorepellents

    Entamoeba histolytica cells, the cause of amoebic dysentery, are highly motile, and this motility is an essential feature of the pathogenesis and morbidity of amoebiasis. However, the control of E. histolytica motility within the gut and during invasion is poorly understood. We have used an improved chemotaxis assay to identify the key extracellular signals mediating Entamoeba chemotaxis. The dominant responses we observe are caused by factors generated by E. histolytica cells themselves. Medium that has been conditioned by E. histolytica growth causes both chemokinesis and negative chemotaxis. The speed of random movement is more than doubled in conditioned compared with fresh medium, and cells move efficiently away from conditioned medium by negative chemotaxis. Ethanol, the product of Entamoeba glucose metabolism, is the principal component of the chemokinetic response. The closely related but nonpathogenic Entamoeba dispar shows no change in motility in response to conditioned medium implying that these responses are central to E. histolytica pathogenesis
