Electromagnetic energy injected into the universe above a few hundred TeV is expected to pile up as γ radiation in a relatively narrow energy interval below 100 TeV due to its interaction with the 2.7°K background radiation. We present an upper limit (90% C.L.) on the ratio of primary γ to charged cosmic rays in the energy interval 65-160 TeV (80- 200 TeV) of 10.3 . 10¯³(7.8 . 10¯³). Data from the HEGRA cosmic-ray detector complex consisting of a wide angle Cerenkov array (AIROBICC) measuring the lateral distribution of air Čerenkov light and a scintillator array, were used with a novel method to discriminate γ-ray and hadron induced air showers. If the presently unmeasured universal far infrared background radiation is not too intense, the result rules out a topological-defect origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays for masses of the X particle released by the defects equal to or larger than about 10_(16) GeV

Killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) are molecules expressed by the most important cells of the immune system for cancer immune vigilance, natural killer (NK) and effector T cells. In this manuscript we study the role that cytotoxic CD8+ T cells expressing KIR receptors could play in cancer immune surveillance. With this objective, frequencies of different KIR+ CD8+ T cell subsets are correlated with the overall survival of patients with melanoma, ovarian and bladder carcinomas. In addition, the gene expression profile of KIR+ CD8+ T cell subsets related to the survival of patients is studied with the aim of discovering new therapeutic targets, so that the outcome of patients with cancer can be improved. Killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) are expressed by natural killer (NK) and effector T cells. Although KIR+ T cells accumulate in oncologic patients, their role in cancer immune response remains elusive. This study explored the role of KIR+CD8+ T cells in cancer immunosurveillance by analyzing their frequency at diagnosis in the blood of 249 patients (80 melanomas, 80 bladder cancers, and 89 ovarian cancers), their relationship with overall survival (OS) of patients, and their gene expression profiles. KIR2DL1+ CD8+ T cells expanded in the presence of HLA-C2-ligands in patients who survived, but it did not in patients who died. In contrast, presence of HLA-C1-ligands was associated with dose-dependent expansions of KIR2DL2/S2+ CD8+ T cells and with shorter OS. KIR interactions with their specific ligands profoundly impacted CD8+ T cell expression profiles, involving multiple signaling pathways, effector functions, the secretome, and consequently, the cellular microenvironment, which could impact their cancer immunosurveillance capacities. KIR2DL1/S1+ CD8+ T cells showed a gene expression signature related to efficient tumor immunosurveillance, whereas KIR2DL2/L3/S2+CD8+ T cells showed transcriptomic profiles related to suppressive anti-tumor responses. These results could be the basis for the discovery of new therapeutic targets so that the outcome of patients with cancer can be improved

[ENG] The short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS) are oligosaccharides that have a great interest as prebiotics. Fructosyltransferase enzymes (FTases) carry out the production of scFOS by enzymatic hydrolysis of sucrose. These products are used as functional food ingredients and also because of their technological properties. As a part of other foods, they can be included in matrices of different pH and be subjected to different heat treatments during processing or preservation. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study the stability of the scFOS produced under different conditions of temperature and pH.Este trabajo forma parte del Proyecto CDTI (ref. emission and encompasses multiple aspects of the patient's life, making it difficult to settle on a definition and to develop reliable assessment criteria. In this consensus process based on a panel of experts in schizophrenia, we aimed to provide useful insights on functional recovery and its involvement in clinical practice and clinical research. Methods: After a literature review of functional recovery in schizophrenia, a scientific committee of 8 members prepared a 75-item questionnaire, including 6 sections: (I) the concept of functional recovery (9 items), (II) assessment of functional recovery (23 items), (III) factors influencing functional recovery (16 items), (IV) psychosocial interventions and functional recovery (8 items), (V) pharmacological treatment and functional recovery (14 items), and (VI) the perspective of patients and their relatives on functional recovery (5 items). The questionnaire was sent to a panel of 53 experts, who rated each item on a 9-point Liken scale. Consensus was achieved in a 2-round Delphi dynamics, using the median (interquartile range) scores to consider consensus in either agreement (scores 7-9) or disagreement (scores 1-3). Items not achieving consensus in the first round were sent back to the experts for a second consideration. Results: After the two recursive rounds, consensus was achieved in 64 items (85.3%): 61 items (81.3%) in agreement and 3 (4.0%) in disagreement all of them from section II (assessment of functional recovery). Items not reaching consensus were related to the concepts of functional recovery (1 item, 13%), functional assessment (5 items, 6.7%), factors influencing functional recovery (3 items, 4.0%), and psychosocial interventions (2 items, 5.6%). Conclusions: Despite the lack of a well-defined concept of functional recovery, we identified a trend towards a common archetype of the definition and factors associated with functional recovery, as well as its applicability in clinical practice and clinical research. This project was funded by Janssen. [EN] Recently, two novel PET devices have been developed with open geometries, namely: breast and prostate-dedicated scanners. The breast-dedicated system comprises two detector rings of twelve modules with a field of view of 170 mm x 170 mm x 94 mm. Each module consists of a continuous trapezoidal LYSO crystal and a PSPMT. The system has the capability to vary the opening of the rings up to 60 mm in order to allow the insertion of a needle to perform a biopsy procedure. The prostate system has an open geometry consisting on two parallel plates separated 28 cm. One panel includes 18 detectors organized in a 6 x 3 matrix while the second one comprises 6 detectors organized in a 3 x 2 matrix. All detectors are formed by continuous LYSO crystals of 50 mm x 50 mm x15 mm, and a SiPM array of 12 x 12 individual photo-detectors. The system geometry is asymmetric maximizing the sensitivity of the system at the prostate location, located at about 2/3 in the abdomen-anus distance. The reconstructed images for PET scanners with open geometries present severe artifacts due to this peculiarity. These artifacts can be minimized using Time Of Flight information (TOF). In this work we present a TOF resolution study for open geometries. With this aim, the dedicated breast and prostate systems have been simulated using GATE (8.1 version) with different TOF resolutions in order to determine the image quality improvements that can be achieved with the existing TOF-dedicated electronics currently present in the market. The images have been reconstructed using the LMOS algorithm including TOF modeling in the calculation of the voxel-Line Of Response emission probabilities. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Government Grants TEC2016-79884-C2 and RTC-2016-5186-1 and by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (Grant Agreement No. 695536).Moliner, L.; Ilisie, V.; González Martínez, AJ.; Oliver-Gil, S.; Gonzalez, A.; Giménez-Alventosa, V.; Cañizares, G.... Distortion-free sensing of neural activity using graphene transistors

    Get PDF
Graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (g-SGFETs) are promising sensing devices to transduce electrochemical potential signals in an electrolyte bath. However, distortion mechanisms in g-SGFET, which can affect signals of large amplitude or high frequency, have not been evaluated. Here, a detailed characterization and modeling of the harmonic distortion and non-ideal frequency response in g-SGFETs is presented. This accurate description of the input-output relation of the g-SGFETs allows to define the voltage- and frequency-dependent transfer functions, which can be used to correct distortions in the transduced signals. The effect of signal distortion and its subsequent calibration are shown for different types of electrophysiological signals, spanning from large amplitude and low frequency cortical spreading depression events to low amplitude and high frequency action potentials. The thorough description of the distortion mechanisms presented in this article demonstrates that g-SGFETs can be used as distortion-free signal transducers not only for neural sensing, but also for a broader range of applications in which g-SGFET sensors are used

Supernucleation Dominates Lignin/Poly(ethylene oxide) Crystallization Kinetics

The effect of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) on the crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is examined. Lignin from spruce and ionic isolation was used to prepare LNPs with a number-averaged diameter of 85 nm (with a relatively large polydispersity) by an ultrasonication method. PEO-based nanocomposites with four different LNP contents (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt %) were prepared and subject to isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization protocols in a series of experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed well-dispersed LNPs in the crystallized PEO matrix. The incorporation of LNPs exponentially increases nucleation density at moderate loadings, with this trend apparently saturating at higher loadings. However, the spherulitic growth rate decreases monotonically with LNP loading. This is attributed to the substantial PEO/LNP affinity, which impacts chain diffusion and induces supernucleation effect (with efficiencies in the order of 200%), but leads to slower growth rates. The overall crystallization kinetics, measured by the DSC, shows faster nanocomposite crystallization rates relative to the neat PEO at all LNP contents examined. This indicates that the supernucleation effect of LNPs dominates over the decrease in the growth rates, although its influence slightly decreases as the LNP content increases. The strong hydrogen-bonded interactions between the LNPs and the PEO are thus reminiscent of confinement effects found in polymer-grafted NP nanocomposites (e.g., PEO-g-SiO2/PEO) in the brush-controlled regime. This work received funding from the Basque Government through grant IT1503 - 22. The ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus block is a simple technique and, complemented with adequate sedation, may provide adequate conditions for performing the exeresis of the parathyroid gland without the need for general anesthesia. This anesthetic technique favors the early discharge of patients undergoing this type of surgery, who can thus be more easily included in a Major Ambulatory Surgery regimen. It is a technique indicated for short-term, lesscomplex surgeries in collaborating patients; although it would also be indicated in high-riskpatients avoiding the need for general anesthesia and ensuring greater hemodynamic stability.
