    The recently proposed species Aeromonas sharmana sp. nov., isolate GPTSA-6T, is not a member of the genus Aeromonas

    A new species of the genus Aeromonas, Aeromonas sharmana sp. nov., was recently described on the basis of a single isolate, strain GPTSA-6T, obtained from a warm spring in India. The description of this new species included biochemical characterization, antibiotic susceptibility, cellular fatty-acid profiles, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, but not DNADNA hybridization data. In the present article, phylogenetic analysis (branch distances in the tree and nucleotide signatures) of the 16S rRNA of isolate GPTSA-6T, together with certain phenotypic characteristics of the isolate reported in the earlier description, clearly indicate that this microorganism does not belong to the genus Aeromonas as known to date, although it falls within the radiation of the family Aeromonadaceae. Emendation from the List of Prokaryotic Names with Standing in Nomenclature is consequently proposed. [Int Microbiol 2007; 10(1):61-64

    Consumo de tabaco y pseudoartrosis en cirugía lumbar instrumentada: Estudio comparativo

    El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar si en los pacientes fumadores de más de 20 cigarrillos al día había una incidencia más alta de pseudoartrosis que en los pacientes no fumadores. El estudio retrospectivo se efectuó en un grupo de 100 pacientes (50 fumadores y 50 no fumadores), intervenidos por problemas degenerativos del caquis mediante artrodesis instrumentada y posterolateral a nivel lumbosacro. Cincuenta y tres pacientes eran varones y 47 mujeres, con una edad media de 49+-10 años. Para determinar la incidencia de pseudoartrosis se valoraron las masas de fusión a los 6 y 24 meses de la intervención y la situación clínica del paciente. A siete de los 100 pacientes se les diagnosticó pseudoartrosis (2 no fumadores y 5 fumadores); los 93 restantes que no presentaron pseudoartrosis, 48 correspondían a pacientes no fumadores y 45 eran fumadores (p=0,24). No hemos podido demostrar la asociación entre consumo de tabaco y mayor índice de pseudoartrosis en pacientes intervenidos de artrodesis lumbosacra.The aim of this study was to determine whether smokers (more than 20 cigarettes per day) had higher rate of pseudoarthrosis than the non-smokers after lumbar fusion. A retrospective study was designed with 100 patients (50 smokers and 50 non-smokers). All the patients were operated on, by doing a posterolateral fusion with instrumentation (transpedicular fixation), due to degenerative pathology of the lumbar spine. Fifty-three patients were males and 47 were females, with an average age of 49+-10 years. To determinate pseudoarthrosis two types of evaluation were performed: Radiographic evaluation in plain radiographs at 6 and 24 months after surgery and clinical assessment. Seven out of 100 patients were diagnosed as pseudoarthrosis (2 non-smokers and 5 smokers) and, of the remaining 93 patients, 48 were non-smokers and 28 smokers (p=0.24). No evidence was found of correlation between cigarette smoking and a higher rate of pseudoarthrosis in patients with an instrumental arthrodesis of the lumbar spine

    Phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic discrepancies to differentiate Aeromonas salmonicida from Aeromonas bestiarum

    The taxonomy of the “Aeromonas hydrophila” complex (comprising the species A. hydrophila, A. bestiarum, A. salmonicida, and A. popoffii) has been controversial, particularly the relationship between the two relevant fish pathogens A. salmonicidaand A. bestiarum. In fact, none of the biochemical tests evaluated in the present study were able to separate these two species. One hundred and sixteen strains belonging to the four species of this complex were identified by 16S rDNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Sequencing of the 16S rDNA and cluster analysis of the 16S–23S intergenic spacer region (ISR)-RFLP in selected strains of A. salmonicida and A. bestiarum indicated that the two species may share extremely conserved ribosomal operons and demonstrated that, due to an extremely high degree of sequence conservation, 16S rDNA cannot be used to differentiate these two closely related species. Moreover, DNA–DNA hybridization similarity between the type strains of A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and A. bestiarum was 75.6 %, suggesting that they may represent a single taxon. However, a clear phylogenetic divergence between A. salmonicida and A. bestiarum was ascertained from an analysis based on gyrB and rpoD gene sequences, which provided evidence of a lack of congruence of the results obtained from 16S rDNA, 16S–23S ISR-RFLP, DNA–DNA pairing, and biochemical profiles.[Int Microbiol 2005; 8(4):259-269

    Probabilistic combination of eigenlungs-based classifiers for COVID-19 diagnosis in chest CT images

    The outbreak of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has changed the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been more than 100 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, including more than 2.4 million deaths. It is extremely important the early detection of the disease, and the use of medical imaging such as chest X-ray (CXR) and chest Computed Tomography (CCT) have proved to be an excellent solution. However, this process requires clinicians to do it within a manual and time-consuming task, which is not ideal when trying to speed up the diagnosis. In this work, we propose an ensemble classifier based on probabilistic Support Vector Machine (SVM) in order to identify pneumonia patterns while providing information about the reliability of the classification. Specifically, each CCT scan is divided into cubic patches and features contained in each one of them are extracted by applying kernel PCA. The use of base classifiers within an ensemble allows our system to identify the pneumonia patterns regardless of their size or location. Decisions of each individual patch are then combined into a global one according to the reliability of each individual classification: the lower the uncertainty, the higher the contribution. Performance is evaluated in a real scenario, yielding an accuracy of 97.86%. The large performance obtained and the simplicity of the system (use of deep learning in CCT images would result in a huge computational cost) evidence the applicability of our proposal in a real-world environment.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Artificial intelligence within the interplay between natural and artificial computation:Advances in data science, trends and applications

    Artificial intelligence and all its supporting tools, e.g. machine and deep learning in computational intelligence-based systems, are rebuilding our society (economy, education, life-style, etc.) and promising a new era for the social welfare state. In this paper we summarize recent advances in data science and artificial intelligence within the interplay between natural and artificial computation. A review of recent works published in the latter field and the state the art are summarized in a comprehensive and self-contained way to provide a baseline framework for the international community in artificial intelligence.     Analysis of 16S rRNA gene mutations in a subset of Aeromonas strains and their impact in species delineation

    Characterization of 999 Aeromonas strains using a published 16S rDNA RFLP identification method showed that 8.1% of the strains produced unexpected (hereafter called "atypical") restriction patterns, making their identification uncertain. Atypical patterns were due to the presence of nucleotide polymorphisms among the rrn operons of the 16S rRNA gene (so-called microheterogeneities). Double sequencing signals at certain positions revealed the nucleotide composition was responsible for the microheterogeneities. Although the number of microheterogeneities was relatively low (0.06-0.66%), trees inferred from the 16S rRNA gene led either to a misidentification or to an inconclusive result for the majority of these strains. Strains with atypical patterns were, however, correctly identified using the rpoD gene sequences, as belonging to Aeromonas caviae, A. veronii, and A. media. All of them, but particularly the two former species, are associated with human disease. Microheterogeneities in 16S rRNA gene sequence were significantly (P 0.01) more prevalent in clinical than in environmental strains. This work also analyzed the effects of these microheterogeneities on the taxonomic position of the investigated strains.     Study of the E. coli elimination from urban wastewater over photocatalysts based on metallized TiO2

    In this study, a series of photocatalysts based on TiO2 was tested in the elimination of Escherichia coli (E. coli) from urban wastewater. Firstly, TiO2 obtained by sol-gel method was modified by sulfation, and then gold or platinum nanoparticles were photodeposited on sulfated titania surface. Platinized samples were also prepared with different Pt content of 0.5 and 2 wt.%. The samples thus obtained were extensively characterized and it was found that sulfation considerably increases the SBET value of TiO2 and promotes the anatase phase formation; it was also found that 0.5 wt.% Pt-TiO2 sample presents the lowest noble metal particle size and the best particle dispersion. All the photocatalysts synthesized have shown bactericidal effect and the results obtained by using bare and metalized TiO2 were considerably better than the results obtained with the commercial TiO2 P25 Evonic. Different light intensities were also evaluated in the photocatalytic tests and it was found that 120 W/m2 leads to obtain the highest E. coli elimination from wastewater samples; however no total elimination of E. coli or other species of bacteria was achieved even after 5 h of photocatalytic treatment without catalyst. Total elimination of the E. coli was achieved after 3 h of photocatalytic reaction by using 120 W/m2 of light intensity and 2 wt.% Pt-TiO2 as photocatalyst; no bacterial regrowth was observed even after 72 h.Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia is acknowledged for the financial support of this research.
