Incorporating Wheelchair Users in People Detection

A wheelchair users detector is presented to extend people detection, providing a more general solution to detect people in environments such as houses adapted for independent and assisted living, hospitals, healthcare centers and senior residences. A wheelchair user model is incorporated in a detector whose detections are afterwards combined with the ones obtained using traditional people detectors (we define these as standing people detectors). We have trained a model for classical (DPM) and for modern (Faster-RCNN) detection algorithms, to compare their performance. Besides the extensibility proposed with respect to people detection, a dataset of video sequences has been recorded in a real in-door senior residence environment containing wheelchairs users and standing people and it has been released together with the associated groundtruthThis work has been partially supported by the Spanish government under the project TEC2014-53176-R (HAVideo) and by the Spanish Government FPU grant programme (Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte

In the last few decades a new phenomenon has burst intensively and rapidly into Spanish and Andalusian societies, and established itself: economic immigration. Immigration policies have shown a continuous interest in achieving the social integration of foreigners in host societies. The importance of employment has not gone unnoticed by social integration policies, nor by the economic immigrants themselves, since employment is the main source of income and status for individuals in our society. We begin from the hypothesis, more accepted than rejected, that achieving social integration is closely related to entering the labour market and maintaining stable employment. For this reason the present article focuses on analysing the socio-professional inclusion of economic immigrants in the autonomous community of Andalusia, as a fundamental indicator of their possibilities of social integratio

El acceso al empleo a través de la orientación laboral en el contexto español

Full employment is a challenge that we face since the nineteenth century, being this objective by which the governments have gone from practicing a corrective policy to a more interventionist one being created in the case of Spain the Law 56/2003 of Employment based on two pillars, to mitigate the effects of the unemployment, and to face its causes through the orientation, formation and intermediation until reaching the insertion of the active population. However, with the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the ability of the Public Employment Services (Servicios Públicos de Empleo) to fight against unemployment has been questioned and we have questioned the viability of the current system. This article reviews the labor insertion programs in Andalusia in order to analyze their adequacy to the needs of job applicants, reflecting on their efficiency and effectiveness with the final objective of proposing improvements.

A proposed model, built in Matlab®, represents the dynamical evolution in real electrolysers, and anticipates operational variables: level, pressure and all concentrations. Dynamic responses in the concentrations of the electrolytic cell, and variations in both level and pressure at the chamber due to the change in current and diffusivity, are reported. The equations by which the variables can be computed are also presented. The proposed model is ready for the corresponding adjustment of parameters based on experimental measurements taken from an available prototype and through a suitable identification process.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Automatic vacant parking places management system using multicamera vehicle detection

This paper presents a multicamera system for vehicles detection and their corresponding mapping into the parking spots of a parking lot. Approaches from the state-of-the-art, which work properly in controlled scenarios, have been validated using small amount of sequences and without more challenging realistic conditions (illumniation changes, different weather). On the other hand, most of them are not complete systems, but provide only parts of them, usually detectors. The proposed system has been designed for realistic scenarios considering different cases of occlussion, ilumination changes and different climatic conditions; a real scenario (the International Pittsburgh Airport parking lot) has been targeted with the condition that existing parking security cameras can be used, avoiding the deployment of new cameras or other sensors infrastructures. For design and validation, a new multicamera dataset has been recorded. The system is based on existing object detectors (the results of two of them are shown) and different proposed postprocessing stages. The results clearly show that the proposed system works correctly in challenging scenarios including almost total occlusions, illumination changes and different weather conditionsThis work has been partially supported by the Spanish Government FPU grant programme (Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte) and by the Spanish government under the project TEC2014-53176-R (HAVideo

Haemophilus parasuis serovar 5 Nagasaki strain adheres and invades PK-15 cells

7 p.Haemophilus parasuis is the agent responsible for causing Gla¨ sser’s disease, which is characterized by fibrinous polyserositis, polyarthritis and meningitis in pigs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro ability of two H. parasuis serovars of different virulence (serovar 5, Nagasaki strain, highly virulent, belonging to serovar 5, and SW114 strain, nonvirulent, belonging to serovar 3) to adhere to and invade porcine kidney epithelial cells (PK-15 line). Nagasaki strain was able to attach at high levels from 60 to 180 min of incubation irrespective of the concentrations compared (107–1010 CFU), and a substantial increase of surface projections could be seen in PK-15 cells by scanning electron microscopy. This virulent strain was also able to invade effectively these epithelial cells, and the highest invasion capacity was reached at 180 min of infection. On the contrary, nonvirulent SW114 strain hardly adhered to PK-15 cells, and it did not invade these cells, thus suggesting that adherence and invasion of porcine kidney epithelial cells could be a virulence mechanism involved in the lesions caused by H. parasuis Nagasaki strain in this organS
