    Oils and fats on food: is it possible to have a healthy diet?

    Oils and fats are an important part of our diet as components of many food formulations. Thus, they are retailed for domestic or hostelry uses and broadly used by food industry for the elaboration of margarines, ice cream, canned food, pre-cooked dishes, bakery, confectionary, chocolates, etc. Chemically, the main component of oils and fats are triacylglycerols (TAGs), which account for up to 95% of their total weight. They consisted of a molecule of glycerol esterified with three fatty acids, usually the saturated, palmitic and stearic, the monounsatu�rated oleic, and the polyunsaturated, linoleic or linolenic, all with 18 carbons excepting the palmitic which has 16 carbons. Out of those most common fatty acids, we can found other fatty acids present only in certain oils such as saturated medium chained fatty acids like lauric and myristic, which contain 12 and 14 carbons respectively

    Towards an Energy Assessment on an Urban Scale for Retrofitting the Housing Stock in Mediterranean Cities

    According to European Directive 2012/27/EU energy retrofitting of the current housing stock is being promoted. However, few studies have been carried out characterizing housing stock energy performance in order to incorporate energy retrofitting in cities in the southern Mediterranean area. The aim of this paper is to propose an energy assessment methodology on urban scale and to apply it to the southern Spanish province of Cadiz. This is followed by the generation of a predictive model for energy assessment in Mediterranean cities which could be further developed and used in the future to estimate overall energy efficiency on an urban scale

    A new HLA-based distributed control architecture for agricultural teams of robots in hybrid applications with real and simulated devices or environments

    The control architecture is one of the most important part of agricultural robotics and other robotic systems. Furthermore its importance increases when the system involves a group of heterogeneous robots that should cooperate to achieve a global goal. A new control architecture is introduced in this paper for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. Some important features such as scalability, code reuse, hardware abstraction and data distribution have been considered in the design of the new architecture. Furthermore, coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system is allowed in the proposed control system. By integrating a network oriented device server Player, Java Agent Development Framework (JADE) and High Level Architecture (HLA), the previous concepts have been considered in the new architecture presented in this paper. HLA can be considered the most important part because it not only allows the data distribution and implicit communication among the parts of the system but also allows to simultaneously operate with simulated and real entities, thus allowing the use of hybrid systems in the development of applications

    Temperature Sensor Based on Colloidal Quantum Dots PMMA Nanocomposite Waveguides

    In this paper, integrated temperature sensors based on active nanocomposite planar waveguides are presented. The nanocomposites consist of cadmium selenide (CdSe) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. When the samples are heated in a temperature range from 25circrmC^{circ}{rm C} to 50 circrmC^{circ}{rm C}, the waveguided photoluminescence of QDs suffers from a strong intensity decrease, which is approximately quadratic dependent on temperature. Moreover, the wavelength peak of the waveguided emission spectrum of CdTe-PMMA shows a blue shift of 0.25 rmnm/circrmC{rm nm}/^{circ}{rm C}, whereas it remains constant in the case of CdSe-PMMA. A temperature resolution of 0.1circrmC^{circ}{rm C} is obtained. QD waveguides have great potential for the development of photonic sensors because of their integration, multiplexing, and roll-to-roll fabrication capabilities.Manuscript received February 21, 2012; revised May 8, 2012; accepted July 18, 2012. The basis for this study has been the three dimensional (3D) finite elements method with hyperbolic material response. The analytical procedure used is presented and the study concludes with a comparative study of the results obtained from the calculation programme used and monitoring system\u27s measurements

    Modelling and simulation of several interacting cellular automata

    Cellular Automata are used for modelling and simulation of many systems. In some applications, the system is formed by a set of subsystems that can be modelled separately, but, in such cases, the existence of interactions between these subsystems requires additional modelling and computer programming. In this paper we propose a modelling methodology for the simulation of a set of Cellular Automata models that interact with each other. The modelling methodology is described, together with an insight on implementation details. Also, it is applied to a particular Cellular Automata model, the Sanpile Model, to illustrate its use and to obtain some example simulations
