This article focuses on the analysis of EU mechanisms to control its external borders, in the light of the last great migratory and refugee crisis afflicting the European continent, with special reference to the recent creation of the European Border and Coast Guard, what it could be considered as a common European border police

Educational Ground Station Based on Software Defined Radio

Most of student satellite missions are based on the design, construction and launch of a picosatellite (cubesat) including the design of the ground station (GS). Traditional GS are based on commercial elements and are designed to support only one mission. These stations access the mission data very inefficiently, as only contact the satellite during short visibility periods. In this paper, we present a novel GS concept based on software defined radio technology that can be integrated in a global network for satellite tracking. The station will be implemented by a group of students as a part of a space project under the supervision of a faculty coordinator. The design must fulfil the requirements of low cost, remote operation, and flexibility to operate in different frequency bands. The set-up of this mid-term educational space project to build an operational GS will hopefully motivate Telecommunication Engineering students to participate and gain real hands-on experience in an international space environment

Configuration of geological domains and geodynamic evolution of the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary off SW Iberia revisited based on seismic velocity and density models

European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2015 (EGU2015), 12-17 April 2015, Vienna, Austria.-- 1 pageWe present a new classification of geological (basement) domains at the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary offshore SW Iberia, together with a regional geodynamic reconstruction spanning from the Mesozoic extension to the Neogene-to-present-day convergence. It is based on seismic velocity and density models along two regional wide- angle seismic transects, one running NW-SE from the Tagus to the Seine abyssal plains, and the other running N-S from S Portugal to the Seine Abyssal Plain, combined with previously available information. The seismic velocity and density structure at the Seine Abyssal Plain and the internal Gulf of Cadiz indicates the presence of a highly heterogeneous oceanic crust, similar to that described in ultra-slow spreading centers, whereas in the Horseshoe and Tagus abyssal plains, the basement structure resembles that of exhumed mantle sections identified in the Northern Atlantic margin. The integration of all this new information allows defining the presence of three oceanic domains off SW Iberia: (1) the Seine Abyssal Plain domain, generated during the first stages of slow seafloor spreading in the NE segment of the Central Atlantic (Early Jurassic); (2) the Gulf of Cadiz domain, made of oceanic crust generated in the Alpine-Tethys spreading system between Iberia and Africa, which was coeval with the formation of the Seine Abyssal Plain domain and lasted up to the North Atlantic continental break-up (Late Jurassic); and (3) the Gorringe Bank domain, mainly made of rocks exhumed from the mantle with little synchronous magmatism, which formed during the first stages of North Atlantic opening (Early Cretaceous). Our models suggest that the Seine Abyssal Plain and Gulf of Cadiz domains are separated by the Lineament South strike-slip fault, whereas the Gulf of Cadiz and Gorringe Bank domains appear to be limited by a deep thrust fault located at the center of the Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, which coincides with the seismicity cluster nucleated in the middle of the plain that shows moment tensor solutions of reverse faulting at depths of 40–60 km. The formation and evolution of these three domains during the Mesozoic is key to understand the sequence of events that occurred during the first stages of opening of the Northern Atlantic and its connection and interplay with the Western Mediterranean basinPeer Reviewe

Islamic copper-based metal artefacts from the Garb al-Andalus. A multidisciplinary approach on the Alcáçova of Martulah (Mértola, South of Portugal)

A multidisciplinary approach has been applied to investigate the production technology of a collection of copper-based artefacts found during archaeological excavation campaigns carried out in the Almohad neighbourhood of Martulah, the Islamic name of modern Mértola (South of Portugal). In stark contrast to other Islamic materials found in the same site such as common and finely decorated pottery, glass, and bone artefacts, metal objects have received less attention despite the high number of artefacts recovered. This study focuses on the chemical characterisation of 171 copper-based artefacts dating back to the 12th and the first half of the thirteenth centuries. The artefacts are daily use objects and consist of personal ornaments (earrings, rings, and casket ornaments), tools (spindles, spatulas, and oil lamp sticks) and artefacts with unknown functions. The analytical results by X-ray fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) provided information not only about technological issues but infer as well on the socio-economic implications of metal consumption in Islamic Mértola. Results revealed that metals were produced using a variety of Cu-based alloys, namely unalloyed copper, brasses (Cu + Zn), bronzes (Cu + Sn), and red brasses (Cu + Sn + Zn), with a variable concentration of Pb, without any apparent consistency, as a likely result of recurrent recycling and mixing scrap metals practices or use of mineral raw materials available locally

Three theorical approaches to political discourses: Concept, signifier and argument

The political theory always seems obligated to discuss about its own identity. If political empirical sciences have their own standardized methodology, the political theory, however, does not have clear approaches and methodologies. This absence of method questions both the way of working and the place of political theory inside political sciences. Following this problem, this paper will try to analyse what political theory studies when, instead of focusing in normative or historical studies, it focuses on the analysis of quotidian political discourses. The article will study the methodological works of Ernesto Laclau, Michael Freeden and Kari Palonen, comparing the approaches and their objects of study: concept, signifier and argument. This way, the paper will show that the absence of a clear method is not the same as arbitrariness in the study of political theory, but, at the same time, this discipline must periodically revise its own approaches
