The advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed and our conclusions are presented

Inflammatory potential of diet and bone mineral density in a senior Mediterranean population : a cross-sectional analysis of PREDIMED-Plus study

    Get PDF
Inflammation could play a key role in tissue damage and bone metabolism. The modified dietary inflammatory score (M-DIS) is a validated tool to estimate the inflammatory potential of the diet. In the present study, we evaluate the associations between the M-DIS and bone mineral density (BMD) in a senior Mediterranean population with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. Baseline cross-sectional association between the M-DIS and bone mineral density was assessed in 1134 participants of the multicenter PREDIMED-Plus trial (aged 55-75 with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome). BMD was measured using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry scans and participants answered a food frequency questionnaire to determine the M-DIS. BMD was categorized as low BMD when T score was equal or lower than -1 and normal BMD in another case. Associations between BMD and M-DIS were evaluated by using linear and logistic regressions adjusted by other co-variates. Participants in the top tertile of the M-DIS had a lower BMD at total femur [β (95% CI) − 0.02 (− 0.04, − 0.01)], trochanter areas [β (95% CI) − 0.03 (− 0.05, − 0.01)] and lumbar spine area [β (95% CI) − 0.03 (− 0.07, 0.01)] (but in the last case, measures were less precise and hence not statistically significant) compared to those in the lower M-DIS tertile. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that the odds of the total femur and femoral trochanter osteopenia/osteoporosis were higher in participants in the top tertile compared to those in the lowest tertile of M-DIS [OR (95% CI) 1.71 (1.12, 2.64), P for trend 0.015; 2.02 (1.29, 3.21), P for trend 0.002, respectively]. A high pro-inflammatory diet, measured by the M-DIS, is associated with lower BMD in a senior Mediterranean population with metabolic syndrome. Antioxidant supplementation modulates neutrophil inflammatory response to exercise-induced stress

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe aim of the present report was to evaluate the inflammatory response to a 2000-m running test considering neutrophil myeloperoxidase as an inflammatory marker, and to verify if supplements rich in antioxidants could modulate Post-test antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses. To this end, a 21-day homogenization period was carried out with three groups: a control group, a supplemented group taking an almond beverage enriched with vitamins C and E and a third group consuming the same beverage but enriched with Lippia citriodora extract. At the end of this period, participants performed a 2000-m run, and blood samples were obtained the day before and immediately after the running test. Plasma and neutrophils were isolated. As a result, plasma creatine kinase and myoglobin increased, indicating Post-test muscle damage. Plasma oxidative markers were increased in all groups, except in the group supplemented with the almond beverage. Neutrophil antioxidant enzymes were significantly increased only in the control group, suggesting an antioxidant effect of the supplements provided in the other groups. Myeloperoxidase activity was significantly increased after the test in the control group, while increased enzyme levels were detected in plasma of the supplement groups. Therefore, antioxidant consumption seems to favour myeloperoxidase release. The connection of this observation with post-exercise recovery will require further investigation.Instituto de Salud Carlos III - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (CB12/03/30038)Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Proyecto RTI2018-096724-B-C21)Generalitat Valenciana (proyecto PROMETEO/2016/006

Ventricular Fibrillation detection using time-frequency and the KNN classifier without parameter extraction

[EN] This work describes new techniques to improve VF detection and its separation from Ventricular Tachycarida (VT) and other rhythms. It is based on time-frequency representation of the ECG and its use as input in an automatic classifier (K-nearest neighbours - KNN) without any further signal parameter extraction or additional characteristics. For comparison purposes, three time-frequency variants are analysed: pseudo Wigner-Ville representation (RTF), grey-scale image obtained from RTF (IRTF), and reduced image from IRTF (reduced IRTF). Four types of rhythms (classes) are defined: ’Normal’ for sinus rhythm, ’VT’ for ventricular tachycardia, ’VF’ for ventricular fibrillation and ’Others’ for the rest of rhythms. Classification results for VF detection in case of reduced IRTF are 88.27% sensitivity and 98.22% specificity. In case of VT, 88.31% sensitivity and 98.80% specificity is obtained, 98.14% sensitivity and 96.82% specificity for normal rhythms, and 96.91% sensitivity and 99.06% specificity for other rhythms. Finally, results are compared with other authors.Mjahad, A.; Rosado Muñoz, A.; Bataller Mompeán, M.; Francés Víllora, JV.; Guerrero Martínez, JF. (2017).
