Diagnosis and numerical simulations of a heavy rain event in the Western Mediterranean Basin
International audienceThe heavy rain event of November 2001 in the western Mediterranean area was synoptically characterized by the presence of a long-lived Omega blocking geopotential pattern. A set of mesoscale numerical simulations using MM5 is performed to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the convection development through several output diagnosis. A potential vorticity evolution showed how dry air masses were extruded from the stratospheric levels promoting strong cyclonic circulation at all levels. Moreover, a deep vertical column of high relative humidity over the Algerian coastline maintained the few and geographically confined convective cells responsible for the heavy precipitation. Mesoscale environment parameters indicated enhanced conditional instability through a deep troposphere layer. Also, strong vertical wind shear values, higher than 50 ms?1 over the troposphere, were derived, indicating enough strength to promote necessary conditions to organize and keep mesoscale convective structures

Radiologic Evaluation of Small Renal Masses (II): Posttreatment Management
The increase in the detection of small renal masses (SRMs) and their best knowledge leads to a change in the therapeutic management of these lesions. The use of a less aggressive surgical technique or even an expectant attitude is the current tendency, in order to preserve as much renal function as possible. Imaging techniques are essential in the followup of these lesions. It allows us to know the postsurgical changes and possible complications due to treatment and the presence of local recurrence and metastases. Furthermore, a close radiological followup of SRM related to ablative treatments is mandatory. A conjugate for the Bargmann representation
In the Bargmann representation of quantum mechanics, physical states are
mapped into entire functions of a complex variable z*, whereas the creation and
annihilation operators and play the role of
multiplication and differentiation with respect to z*, respectively. In this
paper we propose an alternative representation of quantum states, conjugate to
the Bargmann representation, where the roles of and
are reversed, much like the roles of the position and momentum operators in
their respective representations. We derive expressions for the inner product
that maintain the usual notion of distance between states in the Hilbert space.
Applications to simple systems and to the calculation of semiclassical

The nuclear and extended infrared emission of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992 and the interacting system Arp 245
We present subarcsecond resolution infrared (IR) imaging and mid-IR
spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 2992, obtained with
the Gemini North Telescope and the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The N-band
image reveals faint extended emission out to ~3 kpc, and the PAH features
detected in the GTC/CanariCam 7.5-13 micron spectrum indicate that the bulk of
this extended emission is dust heated by star formation. We also report
arcsecond resolution MIR and far-IR imaging of the interacting system Arp 245,
taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory.
Using these data, we obtain nuclear fluxes using different methods and find
that we can only recover the nuclear fluxes obtained from the subarcsecond data
at 20-25 micron, where the AGN emission dominates. We fitted the nuclear IR
spectral energy distribution of NGC 2992, including the GTC/CanariCam nuclear
spectrum (~50 pc), with clumpy torus models. We then used the best-fitting
torus model to decompose the Spitzer/IRS 5-30 spectrum (~630 pc) in AGN and
starburst components, using different starburst templates. We find that,
whereas at shorter mid-IR wavelengths the starburst component dominates (64% at
6 micron), the AGN component reaches 90% at 20 micron. We finally obtained dust
masses, temperatures and star formation rates for the different components of
the Arp 245 system and find similar values for NGC 2992 and NGC 2993. These
measurements are within those reported for other interacting systems in the

The nuclear and extended mid-infrared emission of Seyfert galaxies
We present subarcsecond resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images obtained with
8-10 m-class ground-based telescopes of a complete volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc)
sample of 24 Seyfert galaxies selected from the Swift/BAT nine month catalog.
We use those MIR images to study the nuclear and circumnuclear emission of the
galaxies. Using different methods to classify the MIR morphologies on scales of
~400 pc, we find that the majority of the galaxies (75-83%) are extended or
possibly extended and 17-25% are point-like. This extended emission is compact
and it has low surface brightness compared with the nuclear emission, and it
represents, on average, ~30% of the total MIR emission of the galaxies in the
sample. We find that the galaxies whose circumnuclear MIR emission is dominated
by star formation show more extended emission (650+-700 pc) than AGN-dominated
systems (300+-100 pc). In general, the galaxies with point-like MIR
morphologies are face-on or moderately inclined (b/a~0.4-1.0), and we do not
find significant differences between the morphologies of Sy1 and Sy2. We used
the nuclear and circumnuclear fluxes to investigate their correlation with
different AGN and SF activity indicators. We find that the nuclear MIR emission
(the inner ~70 pc) is strongly correlated with the X-ray emission (the harder
the X-rays the better the correlation) and with the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron
emission line, indicating that it is AGN-dominated. We find the same results,
although with more scatter, for the circumnuclear emission, which indicates
that the AGN dominates the MIR emission in the inner ~400 pc of the galaxies,

Generation, establishment and characterization of a pluripotent stem cell line (CVTTHi001-A) from primary fibroblasts isolated from a patient with activated PI3 kinase delta syndrome (APDS2)
APDS2 is caused by mutations in PIK3R1 gene resulting in constitutive PI3Kδ activation. PI3Kδ is predominantly expressed in leukocytes and plays critical roles in regulating immune responses. Here we first derived fibroblast primary cells from a skin biopsy of a patient carrying a heterozygous single T deletion in intron 11 of the PIK3R1 gene. We next present the derivation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) line using a non-integrative reprogramming technology. Pluripotent-related hallmarks are further shown, including: iPSCs self-renewal and expression of pluripotent and differentiation markers after in vitro differentiation towards embryonic germ layers, assessed by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence
La competencia científica en la comunidad autónoma del país vasco : del currículo al aula
A partir del Currículo Vasco para las Ciencias de la Naturaleza y la Salud en la etapa Secundaria Obligatoria, cuya novedad radica en su formulación en clave de competencias, se analizan los posteriores desarrollos del mismo ligados tanto a la evaluación diagnóstica como a los procesos de innovación en el aula. Se analiza la necesidad de un cambio metodológico en el aula y se presentan algunas de las actividades llevadas a cabo desde los Servicios de apoyo para proporcionar al profesorado claves para el desarrollo de la competencia científica en el aula. Se analizan las líneas generales y los materiales del proyecto de Educación Científica que se esta desarrollando en 30 centros de la CAPV. Asimismo, se presentan modelos de secuencias didácticas que refuerzan sobre todo las actividades de indagación y las de integración
