The measurement of oil film thickness versus time under impact loading conditions.

    Get PDF
The thickness of lubricant films under impact loading conditions has been measured as a function of time by passing a collimated beam of light through the film, detecting the emerging rays with a photomultiplier tube, and displaying the transient waveform on a cathode ray oscilloscope. It is shown that rotative speed is the dominant variable in the determination of film thickness in the contact area of rolling cylinders. Plateau Time is defined as the time period during which minimum film thickness is maintained at the contact area and is interpreted as a measure of the "oiliness" of a lubricant.Commander Naval Ship Systems Commandhttp://www.archive.org/details/measurementofoil00hydiU.S. Navy (U.S.N.) author.Lieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Get PDF
This report is a review of the sediment beneficial use project coordinated by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), which became known as the "Mud to Parks" project. This document focuses on published and unpublished results and insights that researchers developed between the late 1990s and 2017. It is not intended to be a comprehensive technical review of sediment beneficial use, and therefore, includes references to a limited number of publications by other researchers. Although it mainly involves Illinois watersheds, potential applications of results and insights will likely be useful in other areas. Although much of the effort was centered on fine-grained sediment, a large part of the project involved placing sediment on sandy agricultural soil. The Sand Farm Project is reviewed in detail in Appendix B. ISTC was previously housed in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and is now a division of the Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (U of I). The name Mud to Parks originated when the first large project took fine-grained dredged material from Lower Peoria Lake to Chicago to provide soil for a lake-front park. In reality, the project dealt with many aspects of potential beneficial uses of dredged materials from a number of sources. This document is organized into sections dealing with various aspects of the project. The motivation for the project is covered first, followed by a description of early work to determine the ability of the dredged material to be readily transported, and whether it would develop an acceptable soil structure. This section also describes equipment demonstrations. Specific beneficial use projects are covered in the next section. Soil fertility and physical characteristics are then covered along with a discussion of greenhouse and field studies of sediment from the Peoria Lakes and Illinois water supply reservoirs. Information and data from the soil studies are provided in the appendices, which are largely excerpted from published material. The final section contains some of the authors’ thoughts and speculations on potential uses of material dredged to restore depth in navigation channels, wildlife habitats, and reservoirs. This report was supported by contract W912HZ-17-2-0016 from the U. Adaptation of a Filter Assembly to Assess Microbial Bioburden of Pressurant Within a Propulsion System

    Get PDF
A report describes an adaptation of a filter assembly to enable it to be used to filter out microorganisms from a propulsion system. The filter assembly has previously been used for particulates greater than 2 micrometers. Projects that utilize large volumes of nonmetallic materials of planetary protection concern pose a challenge to their bioburden budget, as a conservative specification value of 30 spores per cubic centimeter is typically used. Helium was collected utilizing an adapted filtration approach employing an existing Millipore filter assembly apparatus used by the propulsion team for particulate analysis. The filter holder on the assembly has a 47-mm diameter, and typically a 1.2-5 micrometer pore-size filter is used for particulate analysis making it compatible with commercially available sterilization filters (0.22 micrometers) that are necessary for biological sampling. This adaptation to an existing technology provides a proof-of-concept and a demonstration of successful use in a ground equipment system. This adaptation has demonstrated that the Millipore filter assembly can be utilized to filter out microorganisms from a propulsion system, whereas in previous uses the filter assembly was utilized for particulates greater than 2 micrometers

A problem solving approach to visceral learning

Abstract only. Permission to include in repository granted by Sally Byers, Permissions Assistant, Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd.An earlier paper in this series depicted visceral learning as a problem in concept identification in which subjects seek information about the visceral target (Roberts, Williams, Farrell, & Marlin. 1979). Concepts pertaining to this target are based initially upon procedural details of training and are modified as feedback identifies instances of the desired response. Evidence for this view was sought by examining verbal reports for the information about target responding that is presumably the product of a concept identification process. Accurate self-report was observed when subjects were successfully trained to produce either: 1) an increase and decrease in heart rate, or 2) lateralized changes (L > R and R> L) in skin conductance. Control of the response in the absence of accurate self-report was not observed in either training condition. The present paper describes an extended framework for the study of learning mechanisms. In this approach, a task statement is assumed to establish a problem space within which visceral learning proceeds. Major components of this space include: 1) a representation of task objectives. 2) initial concepts concerning effective strategies derived from the task statement and the subject's personal history, and 3) a processing system which is organized to acquire information about the response from feedback events. The processing system is seen as a construction which is determined uniquely for each learning procedure by processing requirements that are implicit in problem structure. The system organizes memory to receive information about the response and codes this information in a manner appropriate for production of the target in accordance with performance requirements of the task. This analysis suggested that within-subject training for two visceral targets with a transfer requirement (as in Roberts et al., 1979) might have favored identification of differences rather than similarities between the targets and encoding in a manner appropriate for recall without feedback as a retrieval cue. Consequently accurate self-report was assessed as a function of forewarning of transfer when subjects were trained to produce a single target alone. The purpose was to determine whether a problem-solving approach might identify processing conditions that favor veridical self-report following training on a feedback task. Get PDF
In recent years, the ability to continuously monitor activities, health, and lifestyles of individuals using sensor technologies has reached unprecedented levels. Such ubiquitous physiological sensing has the potential to profoundly improve our understanding of human behavior, leading to more targeted treatments for a variety of disorders. The long terms goal of this work is development of novel computational tools to support the study of addiction in the context of cocaine use. The current paper takes the first step in this important direction by posing a simple, but crucial question: Can cocaine use be reliably detected using wearable on-body sensors and current machine learning algorithms? We select wireless ECG as the most promising sensing modality for cocaine use detection. The main contributions in this paper include the presentation of a novel clinical study of cocaine use in which a unique set of wireless ECG data were collected, the description of a computational pipeline for inferring morphological features from noisy wireless ECG waveforms, and the evaluation of cocaine use detection algorithms based on data-driven and knowledge-based feature representations. Our results show that cocaine use can be detected with AUC levels above 0.9 in both the within-subjects and between-subjects cases at the 32mg/70kg dosage level
