    En el marco del proyecto Design2Learn se presenta el proceso de codiseño docentes e investigadores de escenarios de aprendizaje basados en la indagación con soporte tecnológico. Se detallan los principios de diseño. Los resultados incluyen los retos identificados por profesores de distintas disciplinas, así como la secuencia seguida para el proceso de co-diseño y creación de escenarios de aprendizaje basado en el aprendizaje indagativo y potenciados por tecnología en la formación universitaria

    Determining the constitutive parameters of the human femoral vein in specific patients

    This study suggests a method for computing the constitutive model for veins in vivo from clinically registered ultrasound images. The vein is modelled as a hyperelastic, incompressible, thin-walled cylinder and the membrane stresses are computed using strain energy. The material parameters are determined by tuning the membrane stress to the stress obtained by enforcing global equilibrium. In addition to the mechanical model, the study also suggests a preconditioning of the pressure-radius signal. The preconditioning computes an average pressure-radius cycle from all consecutive cycles in the registration and removes, or reduces undesirable disturbances. In order to overcome this problem, an approach is proposed that allows constitutive equations to be determined from clinical data by means of reasonable assumptions regarding in situ configurations and stress states of vein walls. The approach is based on a two-dimensional Fung-type stored-energy function that captures the characteristic nonlinear and anisotropic responses of veins.Peer Reviewe

    One picture or a thousand words? Influence of question length and illustration support on the success and skip rates on online tests

    The growing popularity of automatically graded online tests, either as an evaluation or self-assessment tool in online or blended education, demands a review of how these questions are designed and delivered to their intended audience. This paper analyzes the results of over 20,000 preuniversity mock online quizzes designed to train the students for the Spanish university admission test (known as “Pruebas de Acceso a la Universidad” or “Selectividad”) in the technical drawing subject, corresponding to the June and September intakes of 2009 and 2015. The influence of two key aspects on the questions success and skip rates is assessed: (a) the presence or absence of illustration support and (b) the length ofthe question as a proxy ofreading comprehension difficulty. The results support that the presence of an accompanying illustration in the questions result in fewer skipped questions and mode successful answers, while the length of the question has the opposite effect. The performance difference in the 6-year span is also discussed, showing a slight decline over time in the pass rates while the skip rates remain stable. When comparing both two intakes, corresponding to different academic profiles of students that passed the June exam and those who did not, the success ratio is unsurprisingly lower for the students in the second intake. These findings should help improving the design of online quizzes, including more visual content and/or rephrasing the questions to be more concise, to fit the requirements of students educated in a more visual environment of multimedia technologies.Postprint (author's final draft

    Demographic, clinical, and functional determinants of antithrombotic treatment in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation

    Altres ajuts: Alliance Bristol-Myers Squibb/Pfizer.Background: This study assessed the sociodemographic, functional, and clinical determinants of antithrombotic treatment in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) attended in the internal medicine setting. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted in NVAF patients who attended internal medicine departments for either a routine visit (outpatients) or hospitalization (inpatients). Results: A total of 961 patients were evaluated. Their antithrombotic management included: no treatment (4.7%), vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) (59.6%), direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) (21.6%), antiplatelets (6.6%), and antiplatelets plus anticoagulants (7.5%). Permanent NVAF and congestive heart failure were associated with preferential use of oral anticoagulation over antiplatelets, while intermediate-to high-mortality risk according to the PROFUND index was associated with a higher likelihood of using antiplatelet therapy instead of oral anticoagulation. Longer disease duration and institutionalization were identified as determinants of VKA use over DOACs. Female gender, higher education, and having suffered a stroke determined a preferential use of DOACs. Conclusions: This real-world study showed that most elderly NVAF patients received oral anticoagulation, mainly VKAs, while DOACs remained underused. Antiplatelets were still offered to a proportion of patients. Longer duration of NVAF and institutionalization were identified as determinants of VKA use over DOACs. A poor prognosis according to the PROFUND index was identified as a factor preventing the use of oral anticoagulation
