Sarcopenia as a risk factor of morbimortality in colorectal cancer surgery

    Get PDF
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery is associated with high rates of postoperative morbimortality. Sarcopenia has been identified as an independent predictor of these surgical outcomes. Methods: A sample of 272 patients who underwent CRC surgery between January 2005 and May 2010 at Braga Hospital, was selected. Sarcopenia was defined by the skeletal muscle mass index, measured by preoperative computed tomography (CT), at L3 level, using ImageJ® software. Associations between sarcopenia and qualitative variables were analyzed by Chi-Square Test (χ2) or Fisher’s Exact Test and, for quantitative variables, by Mann-Whitney Test. A multivariate logistic regression was performed to assess if sarcopenia was an independent predictor of major morbidity. The overall and recurrence-free survivals were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate Cox regression was performed for recurrence-free survival. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 19.1%. Sarcopenia was associated with male gender, no CRC family history and colon tumour (p p = 0.029 and p = 0.017, respectively). The presence of sarcopenia was associated with postoperative morbidity Clavien–Dindo classification (p = 0.003), and sarcopenia was an independent predictor for major complications (grade ≥ III) (p = 0.003). Conclusions: The evaluation of sarcopenia in patients undergoing CRC surgical resection allows to predict a higher probability of major postoperative morbimortality. This research received no external funding

As Imunidades Dos Entes De Direito Público Internacional Nas Questões Trabalhistas The Immunities Of International Public Law Entities On Labor Issues

    Get PDF

How different are girls and boys as bullies and victims? Comparative perspectives on gender and age in the bullying dynamics

    Get PDF
Bullying involves aggressive behaviors with the intention to harm others, including manifestations of systematic abuse of power. Two types of bullying can be considered: physical and psychological. Students may get involved in bullying dynamics as bullies, victims, or both-aggressive victims. The literature defines bullying as a global phenomenon, affecting both girls and boys. Therefore, Portuguese schools are no exception, with several studies from North to South of the country demonstrating the presence of bullying in schools, both in elementary and middle schools. The aim of this study is to elaborate the differences and experiences by both genders, boys and girls, in the current dynamics of school bullying. Thus, answering the question-how different are girls and boys as bullies and victims? In addition, it intends to impart the acquired knowledge and raise awareness of the implications of this social context in which Portuguese children are currently involved. The results obtained from a sample of 1147 students attending the 1st cycle of Portuguese education (elementary schools) were in line with previous studies. In order to enrich the literature, bullies, victims, and aggressive victims were characterized in detail. Finally, the importance of the adults’ intervention, especially teachers, was highlighted.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Objective: The present study analyzed the effects of the use and perceived usefulness of bereavement rituals and marital satisfaction on perinatal bereavement.Method: 74 Portuguese women who attended a public hospital in Porto - Portugal, after experiencing one or more abortions in 2019, responded to a self-report survey. The effects of ritual utility and marital satisfaction on bereavement experience, as well as interaction effects, were analyzed. Results: With adjustment to bereavement after pregnancy loss as the dependent variable, a negative effect of marital satisfaction (b=.33) and a positive effect of ritual utility (b =.46) were observed. No significant moderation effect was observed. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of addressing bereavement rituals and conjugality in providing emotional support for the loss, with the figure of the nurse being paramount in the contexts of abortion and neonatal loss

Opportunistic fungal infections, namely involving Candida species, constitute a hot topic for scientific researchers. The present work aims to access antifungal potential of plant-derived phenolic extracts against planktonic cells and biofilms of Candida species. Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (blue gum), Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (licorice), Juglans regia L. (walnut) and Salvia officinalis L. (sage) evidenced to be the most effective Candida growth inhibitors, using disc diffusion assay. Minimal inhibitory (MIC) and minimal fungicidal (MFC) concentrations, and chemical composition of extracts by using HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS were also determined. Blue gum and walnut mainly exerted fungistatic potential, while sage exerted an interesting anti-Candida potential. However, the most prominent candidacidal potential was observed to licorice extract, being achieved the lowest MIC and MFC values. The candidacidal potential of these phenolic extracts was mainly attributed to their high abundance in flavonoids, mainly flavones: luteolin (sage) and apigenin derivatives (licorice), and flavanones: liquiritin derivatives (licorice). In order to deepen the knowledge on the most effective extract, its ability to inhibit biofilm formation was evaluated. Overall, a double concentration of MFC value was necessary to achieve similar results in biofilms. Flow cytometry assays were also carried out, and the obtained results revealed that primary lesion of cellular membrane appear to be most relevant mode of action. Thus, plant derived phenolic compounds evidence a promising potential to combat Candida species biofilms, both individually or combined with conventional therapy

Mesotelioma pericárdico em um canino - relato de caso / Pericardial mesothelioma in a canine - case report

    Get PDF

Bullying’s Negative Effect on Academic Achievement

Bullying's a phenomenon that carries great harm for those involved (bully or victim alike) in which academic achievement is harmed as well. However, the strength of such impact is yet to be clarified, existing many possibilities to explore. Or in other words, many variables that can justify such connection - classroom behavior being one example. The goal of the present investigation is to study the impact that bullying (while mediated by the classroom behavior) has on the academic achievement. The sample consisted of 288 children (from 1st year to 4th year’s students); and their teachers (whom reported their classroom behavior). Results showed that the bullying situation itself, didn’t significantly explain the academic achievement of those involved. However, from classroom behavior it was found an indirect effect between bullying and academic achievement. Within classroom behavior, the main contributive dimensions were - victim related, the excessive motor activity; and bully related, oppositional behaviors, excessive motor activity and ADHD index. This results alert to the importance of the educational agents’ attention given to the existing behavior in their classrooms. Not only because of the disruption created in each classroom’s environment, but also as a possible sign of an involvement in the existing bullying dynamics
