    Get PDF

The way organizational models shape human resource management practices and the perceptions of workers

The main aim of this study was to analyse the way organizational models shape human resource management practices in firms linked to technology-intensive sectors. We used multiple-case study methodology. Four firms we chosen for the case study. The methodology included the use of a series of data collecting techniques, namely: interviews with HRM directors, questionnaires to workers, documental analysis and observation. Our main findings were, first, that the sector of activity, understood in societal terms, emerges as an important factor of isomorphism between the firms. This isomorphism is due to the necessity of firms to comply with the Quality Management requirements and the demands of clients. Second, the firms that have adopted the “lean” model have similar HRM systems and similar conceptualizations of human capital. Both firms have codifying HRM models and both conceptualize their human capital as having low value and singularity. Third, the perception of access to information and the perception of job enrichment are the two factors that differentiate employees' perceptions about work. These factors are, however, shaped by team-work. Team work seems to be responsible for a higher perception of access to information and to supportive leadership. The perception of job enrichment is correlated to the perception of an innovative culture

    Aflatoxinas: Um Problema Mundial

    Get PDF

The Colour of the Other in the Modern Portuguese Youth Novel: A Reading of the Books 'Uma Questão de Cor', by Ana Saldanha and 'Baunilha e Chocolate', by Ana Meireles

The word 'cor' (colour), applied in the Portuguese language to globally designate all the various components of the colour spectrum, and also the terms referred to by each of these components, today presents metaphorical or metonymical extensions of its original meanings, having acquired different semantic contents that are to a great extent culturally constructed and determined. In this paper, I limit myself to the Portuguese case since, although the same phenomenon undoubtedly takes place in other languages, the present metaphorical or metonymical meanings certainly vary from culture to culture. One of the most paradigmatic cases relates to the meanings acquired by the words 'cor' (colour), 'preto/negro' (black/negro), and, in opposition, the word 'branco' (white) within the framework of Portuguese colonial and postcolonial discourses. Based on the analysis of two Portuguese youth novels, 'Uma Questão de Cor', 2010, by Ana Saldanha and 'Baunilha e Chocolate', 2001, by Ana Meireles, I reflect here on how these terms—and the concepts they relate to—, represent and simultaneously contribute towards the construction of an otherness, based on the matter of (skin) colour

ERASMUS+ IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE EXPERIENCE OF INCOMING STUDENTS AT A BUSINESS AND ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL IN PORTUGAL

Erasmus+ is the most widespread student short-term mobility programme in the EU and it has become mandatory in some of the business degrees. The main aim of this study was to analyse Erasmus incoming students ‘expectations and competences developed. The students were enrolled in a course in the field of Organisational Behaviour at a Business School and Administration School of a University of Applied Sciences. Methodologically it consisted of a qualitative study carried out in two stages: a first questionnaire was applied to the 30 students present in the opening class and a second questionnaire was applied to the 35 that wrote the final test of the course. At the beginning of the semester students were asked about their motivations and expectations for Erasmus and the course, at the end of the semester students were asked the competences they perceived they developed and their experience. Students were from the bachelor and master’s degrees and all of them were from western and eastern European higher education institutions. Our main findings were that Erasmus students’ motivations for the course, and the Erasmus experience, were related to “vacational”/leisure reasons and the opportunity to develop competences associated with culture awareness and working in multicultural groups, followed by the motivation to improve their proficiency in English. Personal development and independence were also mentioned but less salient. As to the competences they perceived they developed, culture awareness and the ability to work in multicultural groups are the most salient but it was followed by independence, sense of initiative and autonomy. The perception of competences to work in international assignments is also mentioned but it is not very salient.  Article visualizations

Borders of Ecclesiastical Power in the Medieval City: The Perception of Coimbra’s Parochial Network through the Case of the Parish of the Monastery of Santa Cruz (Eleventh to Fourteenth Centuries): Las fronteras del poder eclesiástico en la ciudad medieval: la percepción de la red parroquial de Coímbra a través del caso de la parroquia del monasterio de Santa Cruz (siglos XI-XIV)

The twelfth century was an important period in the political and territorial definition of the Portuguese Kingdom. Coimbra was chosen by Afonso Henriques – the prince who would become the first Portuguese king – as his seat at that time and saw the foundation of the Augustinian monastery of Santa Cruz outside the city walls. During the establishment of this monastery, multiple documents were written that allow us to demarcate the parish of São João, under the monastery’s jurisdiction. Drawing on the study of this and other documents produced in Coimbra during the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, this paper will examine the process of territorialisation of the parish of São João and the contemporary definition of a parochial network in Coimbra. Besides studying the boundaries of the city’s nine parishes, as far as the sources allow, an examination of the feeling of ‘belonging’ shown by lay parishioners will be undertaken.

The Apiaceae family is well represented in the Azores, with 13 genera and 18 species (6 of them endemic). Among them are two subspecies of Daucus: D. carota L. ssp. azoricus Franco, an endemic subspecies described in 1971 and D. carota L. ssp. maritimus (Lam.) Batt. Daucus carota, the only cultivated species of the genus, exists in both domesticated and wild forms and interbreeding between these forms is very common. The described subspecies are phenotypically diverse and there is little consensus on their number, diagnostic characters and distribution. The purpose of this study was to characterize morphologically and genetically the populations of D. carota occurring in São Miguel island (Azores). Specimens were collected from ten populations, distributed throughout the island. The statistical analysis of the data collected from the morphometric characterization did not help to resolve the relationships between the different sampling sites. The overlapping character states and the great phenotypic diversity we found within each of the sampled areas seem to indicate that there are no major morphological differences between all the sites. We sequenced one nuclear conserved ortholog region (COS) and the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) to test for genetic differences. Our ITS sequences revealed little variation among them, with only two different haplotypes emerging from the 20 sequences produced. The COS sequences obtained were more variable, with five haplotypes in the seven sequences analyzed. Maximum Likelihood, Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses of both alignments including Genbank sequences of other Daucus accessions indicated a close relationship between our samples and other D. carota subspecies, although a conclusive inference of the infraspecific classification of D. carota in general, and of our S. Miguel specimens in particular, remains problematic
