School Failure and Intergenerational Human Capital Transmission… ABSTRACT A new education reform is about to be passed into Law, in Portugal, the extension of compulsory education until the 12th grade being one of the main goals. Given huge value school failure indicators (e.g., illiteracy rates, drop-outs, retention rates) still exhibit for Portuguese education system, we keep large doubts on the effectiveness of such an aim. Moreover, education outcomes inertia between generations appears to be strong, in the light of some indirect indicators, although no recent specific research has been addressing such an issue. In this paper we therefore try to shed some light on the potential impact intergenerational school achievement would exert upon actual school failing and also control for possible endogeneity both with students' own previous trajectory indicators and school effect. For that purpose, we rely on 2003 data relative to Lisbon Metropolitan Area four schools as case studies (author abstract)School failure; father’s, mother’s education; students’ previous school trajectories; school effect; Portugal

Genetic Testing in Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Is It for Everyone?

ReviewPurpose of Review: Lipid measurements and genetic testing are the main diagnostic tools for FH screening that are available in many countries. A lipid profile is widely accessible, and genetic testing, although available worldwide, in some countries is only performed in a research context. Still FH is diagnosed late, showing lack of early screening programs worldwide. Recent Findings: Pediatric screening of FH was recently recognized by the European Commission Public Health Best Practice Portal as one on the best practices in non-communicable disease prevention. The early diagnosis of FH and the lowering of LDL-C values over lifespan can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and offer health and socioeconomic gains. Summary: Current knowledge about FH shows that early detection through appropriate screening needs to become a priority in healthcare systems worldwide. Governmental programs for FH identification should be implemented to unify the diagnosis and increase patient identification.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Active brain 4 all : a social brain gym online platform

Ageing has been increasing. Not only in Portugal but also across Europe, demographic involution has been the trend. Imagina® is involved in a project to design and build a social online platform with cognitive games for brain gym, promoting active ageing and rehabilitation. In this paper we will present how we came to a first design solution using two complementary techniques: a benchmarking study, trying to identify what is relevant and how we can propose a better and smarter solution, and a survey by questionnaire to refine our assumptions taking into account the opinion of specialists in the field. Another challenge is how to design and develop a solution that is easily accessible anytime, everywhere, consistent and transparent to the user from any operating system and any device, with particular awareness to tablets and smart phones

A dissertação compreende três secções. The thesis comprehends tree sections. The first comprehends the characterization of the Vouga basin (in biophysical, climatological, socio–economic and hydrological terms) and it’s flooding regime, concerning rainfall, hydraulic levels and flows. The second section discusses hydrological modelling, seeking to obtain, trough real monitored data, and using commercial available models, contributes to evaluate and/or predict the flood regime. Bearing in mind the Vouga basin dimension, and the inherent difficulty to obtain and work hydroclimatological data from such a complex system the modelling was restricted to Águeda subbasin, which presents some characteristics that make it especially indicated to this kind of approach: it’s a small basin, with an hydrological regime and geographical disposition that make it especially prone to sudden flooding, which affect seriously the local community. Third and last section presents the conclusions of this research, discussing the gaps of information and possible future work to be developed. It is intended to enhance the importance and potential of hydrological modelling as a tool to decision support for the civil protection services, in the establishment of flood alerts, evacuation planning and deployment of relief operations
