A probabilistic seismic hazard model based on cellular automata and information theory

    No full text
International audienceWe try to obtain a spatio-temporal model of earthquakes occurrence based on Information Theory and Cellular Automata (CA). The CA supply useful models for many investigations in natural sciences; here, it have been used to establish temporal relations between the seismic events occurring in neighbouring parts of the crust. The catalogue used is divided into time intervals and the region into cells, which are declared active or inactive by means of a certain energy release criterion (four criteria have been tested). A pattern of active and inactive cells which evolves over time is given. A stochastic CA is constructed with the patterns to simulate their spatio-temporal evolution. The interaction between the cells is represented by the neighbourhood (2-D and 3-D models have been tried). The best model is chosen by maximizing the mutual information between the past and the future states. Finally, a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Map is drawn up for the different energy releases. The method has been applied to the Iberian Peninsula catalogue from 1970 to 2001. For 2-D, the best neighbourhood has been the Moore's one of radius 1; the von Neumann's 3-D also gives hazard maps and takes into account the depth of the events. Gutenberg-Richter's law and Hurst's analysis have been obtained for the data as a test of the catalogue. Our results are consistent with previous studies both of seismic hazard and stress conditions in the zone, and with the seismicity occurred after 2001

This study was conducted in line with the University of Nueva Caceres’ (UNC) Research Agenda which provided foundation in improving new knowledge and conceptualizing new strategies to enhance the education process of students. This study was conducted to investigate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the tertiary science education curriculum in UNC as perceived by science teachers and students. The research used interview and direct observation to gather pertinent data. The data were then analyzed using a conceptual framework. Through answers from interviews which are primarily from the observation of the participants then it categorized into strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The analyzed data from students and observations of the researchers shows an evident weakness in the construction of the tertiary science education curriculum of the UNC. The following conclusions were made: the science education curriculum of UNC is not aligned to what is required by the K-12 curriculum in terms of teacher preparation, the science education curriculum of UNC affects the general performance of teachers to effectively instruct the students due to the failure of the curriculum to integrate related disciplines connected to Physical Science such as Mathematics, the science education curriculum also imposes a limitation of probable learning due to the lack of materials needed for some activities, there exist problems that affect the productivity of the students which are performance and skills-related, and there are ways to improve the current level of effectiveness of tertiary science curriculum through the integration of partnership possibilities with other universities and maintenance of current innovation

Origen de la alunita y la natroalunita del depósito de caolín de Mina Equivocada (Prov. de Río Negro, Argentina)

The origin of alunite and natroalunite from a kaolin deposit (Equivocada Mine, Rio Negro Province) has been studied. Chemical analysis showed that alunite is K0.89 and natroalunite Na0.97, in agreement with X ray diffraction data. The high contents of minor elements in alunite, especially Ba and Sr are compatible with a hydrothermal origin in contrast to natroalunite whose very low values suggest a secondary origin. Alunite has a δ34S = +15.9‰ and a δ18O = +12.9‰, while in natroalunite these values are -5.8‰ and +19.0‰ respectively. δ34S values suggest that alunite formed from a hypogenic process of hydrothermal origin whereas natroalunite is probably related to a supergen origin. The occurrence of alunite in veins crosscutting the other minerals, indicates that it was the last mineral to crystallize

The nature of VX Sagitarii - Is it a TŻO, a RSG, or a high-mass AGB star?

Aims. We present a spectroscopic analysis of the extremely luminous red star VX Sgr based on high-resolution observations combined with AAVSO light curve data. Given the puzzling characteristics of VX Sgr, we explore three scenarios for its nature: a massive red supergiant (RSG) or red hypergiant (RHG), a Thorne Żytkow object, and an extreme asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. Methods. Sampling more than one whole cycle of photometric variability, we derive stellar atmospheric parameters by using state-of-the-art PHOENIX atmospheric models. We compare them to optical and near-infrared spectral types. We report on some key features due to neutral elemental atomic species such as Li I, Ca I, and Rb I. Results. We provide new insights into its luminosity, its evolutionary stage, and its pulsation period. Based on all the data, there are two strong reasons to believe that VX Sgr is some sort of extreme AGB star. Firstly, it has Mira-like behaviour during active phases. VX Sgr shows light variation with amplitude that is much larger than any known RSG and clearly larger than all RHGs. In addition, it displays Balmer line emission and, as shown here for the first time, line doubling of its metallic spectrum at maximum light, both characteristics typical of Miras. Secondly, unlike any known RSG or RHG, VX Sgr displays strong Rb I lines. In addition to the photospheric lines that are sometimes seen, it always shows circumstellar components whose expansion velocity is compatible with that of the OH masers in the envelope, demonstrating a continuous enrichment of the outer atmosphere with s-process elements, a behaviour that can only be explained by a third dredge-up during the thermal pulse phase. This research is partially supported by the Spanish Government Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICI) under grants FJCI-2014-23001, AYA2015-68012-C2-2-P, PGC2018-093741-B-C21/C22 (MICI/AEI/FEDER, UE). Assessment of Emotional Experience and Emotional Recognition in Complicated Grief

There is substantial evidence of bias in the processing of emotion in people with complicated grief (CG). Previous studies have tended to assess the expression of emotion in CG, but other aspects of emotion (mainly emotion recognition, and the subjective aspects of emotion) have not been addressed, despite their importance for practicing clinicians. A quasi-experimental design with two matched groups (Complicated Grief, N D 24 and Non-Complicated Grief, N D 20) was carried out. The Facial Expression of Emotion Test (emotion recognition), a set of pictures from the International Affective Picture System (subjective experience of emotion) and the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (psychopathology) were employed. The CG group showed lower scores on the dimension of valence for specific conditions on the IAPS, related to the subjective experience of emotion. In addition, they presented higher values of psychopathology. In contrast, statistically significant results were not found for the recognition of emotion. In conclusion, from a neuropsychological point of view, the subjective aspects of emotion and psychopathology seem central in explaining the experience of those with CG. These results are clinically significant for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts working in the field of grief and loss

Multi-phase generators viability for offshore wind farms with HVDC transmission

    Get PDF
Política de Open Access indicada en la web del editor. No aparece la revista en Sherpa/RomeoThe interest in offshore wind farms has experienced a significant growth in recent years. Technical knowledge allow the design of wind farms at higher distances, making the high voltage dc (HVDC) transmission a real alternative to current high voltage ac (HVAC) transmission. When the network is decoupled from the wind farm by a dc link, there is no need for a mandatory use of three-phase generator. To the contrary, multi-phase generators can be used and the wind farm can benefit from inherent advantages and recent developments of multi-phase drives. This preliminary study shows some of the potential advantages of the dual three-phase generators in wind energy conversion systems (WECS)
