Theoretical impact of insecticide-impregnated school uniforms on dengue incidence in Thai children.

BACKGROUND: Children carry the main burden of morbidity and mortality caused by dengue. Children spend a considerable amount of their day at school; hence strategies that reduce human-mosquito contact to protect against the day-biting habits of Aedes mosquitoes at schools, such as insecticide-impregnated uniforms, could be an effective prevention strategy. METHODOLOGY: We used mathematical models to calculate the risk of dengue infection based on force of infection taking into account the estimated proportion of mosquito bites that occur in school and the proportion of school time that children wear the impregnated uniforms. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The use of insecticide-impregnated uniforms has efficacy varying from around 6% in the most pessimistic estimations, to 55% in the most optimistic scenarios simulated. CONCLUSIONS: Reducing contact between mosquito bites and human hosts via insecticide-treated uniforms during school time is theoretically effective in reducing dengue incidence and may be a valuable additional tool for dengue control in school-aged children. The efficacy of this strategy, however, is dependent on the compliance of the target population in terms of proper and consistent wearing of uniforms and, perhaps more importantly, the proportion of bites inflicted by the Aedes population during school time

O Código Florestal Atual (Lei Federal nº 12.651/2012) e suas implicações na prevenção de desastres naturais

We have analyzed the changes in the Brazilian law 12.651/2012 in comparison with the formerone (Forest Code, 1965) and presented the implications for civil defense institutions and society. We have used scientific articles and passages from the law and other regulation documents as astarting point to discuss the importance of areas of permanent preservation (APPs) to reducenatural disasters and to promote an appropriate process of urban occupation. When discussingdisasters prevention, it is mandatory to obey the APPs regulation, both in irregular settlementsand in areas used for urban occupation. The regulation of these areas must consider theecosystem services provided by the municipalities’ green areas, further than reducing massmovimens and floods. This regulation must provide healthy coexistence, leisure, education andbetter quality of life for its population.

A Note on the Risk of Infections Invading Unaffected Regions.

We present two probabilistic models to estimate the risk of introducing infectious diseases into previously unaffected countries/regions by infective travellers. We analyse two distinct situations, one dealing with a directly transmitted infection (measles in Italy in 2017) and one dealing with a vector-borne infection (Zika virus in Rio de Janeiro, which may happen in the future). To calculate the risk in the first scenario, we used a simple, nonhomogeneous birth process. The second model proposed in this paper provides a way to calculate the probability that local mosquitoes become infected by the arrival of a single infective traveller during his/her infectiousness period. The result of the risk of measles invasion of Italy was of 93% and the result of the risk of Zika virus invasion of Rio de Janeiro was of 22%

Neutralization of Fuel Tankering Emissions for Environmental Sustainability

The strategy adopted had verified the impacts of Fuel Tankering by the total value assessment in the Brazilian aviation industry in 2019, recommending practical actions to compensate and neutralize damages caused on the environment. The importance of sustainability has significantly increased over the past years. The aviation industry has represented an important pillar helping society to meet their present needs, without compromising the environment and future generations. The present research had as main objective to verify if the Brazilian aviation industry can neutralize the carbon emissions from Fuel Tankering, a practice of refueling more than necessary to gain financial leverage and be environmentally sustainable. The selected sample was the domestic Brazilian market, composed of the three biggest airlines in the region which represents more than 90% of the market share. The results of the study have indicated State taxes in Brazil as one of the root causes for Fuel Tankering practice, financial investments to neutralize the carbon emissions which are not considered by the airlines, and policies for carbon compensation that have not been detailed and cleared in the Brazilian aviation market

Structurally unstable quadratic vector fields of codimension two : Families possessing a finite saddle-node and an infinite saddle-node

In 1998, Artés, Kooij and Llibre proved that there exist 44 structurally stable topologically distinct phase portraits modulo limit cycles, and in 2018 Artés, Llibre and Rezende showed the existence of at least 204 (at most 211) structurally unstable topologically distinct codimension-one phase portraits, modulo limit cycles. Artés, Oliveira and Rezende (2020) started the study of the codimension-two systems by the set (AA), of all quadratic systems possessing either a triple saddle, or a triple node, or a cusp point, or two saddle-nodes. They got 34 topologically distinct phase portraits mod-ulo limit cycles. Here we consider the sets (AB) and (AC). The set (AB) contains all quadratic systems possessing a finite saddle-node and an infinite saddle-node obtained by the coalescence of an infinite saddle with an infinite node. The set (AC) describes all quadratic systems possessing a finite saddle-node and an infinite saddle-node, obtained by the coalescence of a finite saddle (respectively, finite node) with an infinite node (re-spectively, infinite saddle). We obtain all the potential topological phase portraits of these sets and we prove their realization. From the set (AB) we got 71 topologically distinct phase portraits modulo limit cycles and from the set (AC) we got 40 ones

Identifying people who are talking about the same topic in social networks, even having a different cultural background

Social media are assumed here as a blending of technology and social interaction for the co-creation of value, as in social networks. We discuss that in such environments, it is possible to find people with common interests that potentially can promote discussions, teaching and learning from each other. However, the approaches to recommend people to interact with in the social network still do not consider the users’ cultural background. This paper describes an approach to identify people who are talking about the same topic in social networks, even having a different cultural background, in order to introduce to each other and leverage interaction to exchange experience, knowledge, etc. Some tests’ results applying the proposal are presented. The approach was adopted in three different topics of discussion and the resultssuggest that the generated cultural understanding improves the chances of identifying people with similar interests
