    PRELIMINARY STUDY FOR SEISMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE UNDERGROUND FACILITIES AT POINT 5 OF THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER (LHC) AT CERN

    The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) is continuously upgrading its extensive underground facilities to cope with the need for new and more complex experiments. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) houses the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at its Point 5, where there are two large shafts, two 100 m deep major parallel caverns, with a total span of 50 m, separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. Such a complex underground infrastructure lies in a sedimentary rock formation (red molasse) of the Geneva basin, with a low rock cover of about 20 m to the overlying 50 m thick layer of water bearing moraine. The site is classified as a zone of moderate seismicity and the underground structures were designed against a “standard” seismic risk, that corresponds to the importance category II according to Eurocode 8. To study the dynamic response of the caverns to seismic waves, a series of Finite Element (FE) full dynamic analyses have been carried out, where the non-linear behavior of the underground layers has been carefully modelled. A suite of input signals that comply with the design spectrum has been applied to the model. The preliminary results are commented in the paper to define the seismic safety requirement for the sensitive infrastructures and installations located inside the tunnels and caverns.</p

    Human CD4 T-cells with a naive phenotype produce multiple cytokines during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and correlate with active disease

    T-cell-mediated immune responses play a fundamental role in controlling Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) infection, and traditionally, this response is thought to be mediated by Th1-type CD4+ T-cells secreting IFN-γ. While studying the function and specificity of M. tuberculosis-reactive CD4+ T-cells in more detail at the single cell level; however, we found a human CD4+ T-cell population with a naive phenotype that interestingly was capable of producing multiple cytokines (TCNP cells). CD4+ TCNP cells phenotyped as CD95lo CD28int CD49dhi CXCR3hi and showed a broad distribution of T cell receptor Vβ segments. They rapidly secreted multiple cytokines in response to different M. tuberculosis antigens, their frequency was increased during active disease, but was comparable to latent tuberculosis infection in treated TB patients. These results identify a novel human CD4+ T-cell subset involved in the human immune response to mycobacteria, which is present in active TB patients' blood. These results significantly expand our understanding of the immune response in infectious diseases

    Apresenta-se trajetória de um grupo de pesquisa dedicado à produção de conhecimento sobre jovens de espaços populares no contexto de produção de filmes de pesquisa. Dois filmes são descritos e interpretados com especial destaque aos dispositivos utilizados para colocar em diálogo as narrativas de si e contextos de vida e sociabilidade de jovens através de imagens e sons. A representação fílmica não se confunde com um retrato do real, mas, em vez disso, é reconstituição através da seleção, tradução e montagem do produto que se quer compartilhar com o público. As entrevistas narrativas concebidas em bases dialógicas são elementos estruturantes da produção dos filmes que buscam apresentar o ser-jovem em sua complexidade

    Minimally invasive vs. open segmental resection of the splenic flexure for cancer: a nationwide study of the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology-Colorectal Cancer Network (SICO-CNN)

    Background Evidence on the efficacy of minimally invasive (MI) segmental resection of splenic flexure cancer (SFC) is not available, mostly due to the rarity of this tumor. This study aimed to determine the survival outcomes of MI and open treatment, and to investigate whether MI is noninferior to open procedure regarding short-term outcomes. Methods This nationwide retrospective cohort study included all consecutive SFC segmental resections performed in 30 referral centers between 2006 and 2016. The primary endpoint assessing efficacy was the overall survival (OS). The secondary endpoints included cancer-specific mortality (CSM), recurrence rate (RR), short-term clinical outcomes (a composite of Clavien-Dindo &gt; 2 complications and 30-day mortality), and pathological outcomes (a composite of lymph nodes removed &gt;= 12, and proximal and distal free resection margins length &gt;= 5 cm). For these composites, a 6% noninferiority margin was chosen based on clinical relevance estimate. Results A total of 606 patients underwent either an open (208, 34.3%) or a MI (398, 65.7%) SFC segmental resection. At univariable analysis, OS and CSM were improved in the MI group (log-rank test p = 0.004 and Gray's tests p = 0.004, respectively), while recurrences were comparable (Gray's tests p = 0.434). Cox multivariable analysis did not support that OS and CSM were better in the MI group (p = 0.109 and p = 0.163, respectively). Successful pathological outcome, observed in 53.2% of open and 58.3% of MI resections, supported noninferiority (difference 5.1%; 1-sided 95%CI - 4.7% to infinity). Successful short-term clinical outcome was documented in 93.3% of Open and 93.0% of MI procedures, and supported noninferiority as well (difference - 0.3%; 1-sided 95%CI - 5.0% to infinity). Conclusions Among patients with SFC, the minimally invasive approach met the criterion for noninferiority for postoperative complications and pathological outcomes, and was found to provide results of OS, CSM, and RR comparable to those of open resection

    E-SSA Satellite Messaging Return Channel: Performance Analysis and Field Trials Results

    An open ITS platform combining interactive satellite services with other communication channels is being developed and evaluated in field trials within the SafeTRIP project [1]. Prototyping and in-field validation of a novel waveform for messaging return channel over satellite for land mobile is an important objective of the project. The overall system architecture has recently been standardized by ETSI under the name of S-MIM (S-band Mobile Interactive Multimedia). The messaging protocol, described in the Part 3 of the standard, is based on the Enhanced Spread Spectrum Aloha (E-SSA). Its main asset resides in the low power required at the transmitter, which will allow the reuse of off-the-shelf power amplifiers and low-cost omnidirectional antennas. This paper will present a comprehensive summary of previous E-SSA performance analysis from simulations and the first field trials results using the E-SSA waveform. The presented results have been derived from static and mobile field trials carried out in Germany with fully functional E-SSA modulator and demodulator prototypes and the EUTELSAT10A satellite. Results for the static and mobile performance of the E-SSA demonstrator with an omni-directional antenna under Line-ofsight (LOS) conditions are presented. The measured Packet Error Rates of transmissions via satellite at different terminal power levels confirm the theoretical link budget calculations for single and multiple simultaneously transmitting terminals. The degradation due to fading effects of the transmission channel under mobile conditions has been measured during the trials to approx. 3 dB. The resulting overall required transmitter power in the multi-user scenario of the trials setup has been only -3 dBW to reach a high QoS under mobile conditions. This value confirms the suitability of the E-SSA waveform for interactive mobile services for the mass market

    The Performance of Preloaded Bolts in Seismically Prequalified Steel Joints in a Fire Scenario

    Seismically pre-qualified beam-to-column joints guarantee large ductility in seismic scenarios thanks to the effectiveness of the design rules and technological requirements that are devoted to avoiding the failure of brittle components (i.e., bolts and welds). However, their performance under different severe actions like those induced by fire has not been properly investigated. Therefore, a parametric study based on finite element simulations has been carried out with the aim to verify the effectiveness of local details of seismically prequalified joints under fire. Finite element analyses were carried out on beam-to-column assemblies sub-structured from a reference archetype building accounting for both material and geometrical imperfections. The bolts&rsquo; internal actions were monitored in all the investigated specimens varying the applied vertical loads. The results show that the seismic design rules adopted to size the bolts are effective to resist the large increase in shear forces in the bolts occurring under fire. Thus, the investigated joints provide satisfactory ductility and rotation capacity at high temperature preventing the failure of bolts; further analysis could be conducted to investigated the fire performance of the investigated joints in a seismic scenario

    S-MIM field trials results

    An intelligent transport system open platform integrating the S-band Mobile Interactive Multimedia messaging return channel protocol over satellite (based on Enhanced Spread Spectrum Aloha) has been developed and tested under real environment conditions within the framework of SafeTRIP, an FP7 EU-funded project. This paper presents the first field trials results using the S-band Mobile Interactive Multimedia technology. The introduced forward and return link outcomes have been derived from mobile field trials carried out in the surroundings of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Germany. Finally the validation of the system performances has been realized thanks to the use of a traffic emulator that can simulate a large population of Enhanced Spread Spectrum Aloha terminals
