Game-theoretic versions of strong law of large numbers for unbounded variables
We consider strong law of large numbers (SLLN) in the framework of
game-theoretic probability of Shafer and Vovk (2001). We prove several versions
of SLLN for the case that Reality's moves are unbounded. Our game-theoretic
versions of SLLN largely correspond to standard measure-theoretic results.
However game-theoretic proofs are different from measure-theoretic ones in the
explicit consideration of various hedges. In measure-theoretic proofs existence
of moments are assumed, whereas in our game-theoretic proofs we assume
availability of various hedges to Skeptic for finite prices
Bacterial community profiles and Vibrio parahaemolyticus abundance in individual oysters and their association with estuarine ecology
Oysters naturally harbor the human gastric pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus, but the nature of this association is unknown. Because microbial interactions could influence the accumulation of V. parahaemolyticus in oysters, we investigated the composition of the microbiome in water and oysters at two ecologically unique sites in the Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire using 16s rRNA profiling. We then evaluated correlations between bacteria inhabiting the oyster with V. parahaemolyticus abundance quantified using a most probable number (MPN) analysis. Even though oysters filter-feed, their microbiomes were not a direct snapshot of the bacterial community in overlaying water, suggesting they selectively accumulate some bacterial phyla. The microbiome of individual oysters harvested more centrally in the bay were relatively more similar to each other and had fewer unique phylotypes, but overall more taxonomic and metabolic diversity, than the microbiomes from tributary-harvested oysters that were individually more variable with lower taxonomic and metabolic diversity. Oysters harvested from the same location varied in V. parahaemolyticus abundance, with the highest abundance oysters collected from one location. This study, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind to evaluate associations of V. parahaemolyticus abundance with members of individual oyster microbiomes, implies that sufficient sampling and depth of sequencing may reveal microbiome members that could impact V. parahaemolyticus abundance
Temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy of HgTe quantum wells
We report on magnetospectroscopy of HgTe quantum wells in magnetic fields up
to 45 T in temperature range from 4.2 K up to 185 K. We observe intra- and
inter-band transitions from zero-mode Landau levels, which split from the
bottom conduction and upper valence subbands, and merge under the applied
magnetic field. To describe experimental results, realistic
temperature-dependent calculations of Landau levels have been performed. We
show that although our samples are topological insulators at low temperatures
only, the signature of such phase persists in optical transitions at high
temperatures and high magnetic fields. Our results demonstrate that
temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy is a powerful tool to discriminate
trivial and topological insulator phases in HgTe quantum wells
Temperature-driven single-valley Dirac fermions in HgTe quantum wells
We report on temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy of two HgTe/CdHgTe
quantum wells below and above the critical well thickness . Our results,
obtained in magnetic fields up to 16 T and temperature range from 2 K to 150 K,
clearly indicate a change of the band-gap energy with temperature. The quantum
well wider than evidences a temperature-driven transition from
topological insulator to semiconductor phases. At the critical temperature of
90 K, the merging of inter- and intra-band transitions in weak magnetic fields
clearly specifies the formation of gapless state, revealing the appearance of
single-valley massless Dirac fermions with velocity of
ms. For both quantum wells, the energies extracted from
experimental data are in good agreement with calculations on the basis of the

On the order of summability of the Fourier inversion formula
In this article we show that the order of the point value, in the sense of Łojasiewicz, of a tempered distribution and the order of summability of the pointwise Fourier inversion formula are closely related. Assuming that the order of the point values and certain order of growth at infinity are given for a tempered distribution, we estimate the order of summability of the Fourier inversion formula. For Fourier series, and in other cases, it is shown that if the distribution has a distributional point value of order k, then its Fourier series is e.v. Cesàro summable to the distributional point value of order k+1. Conversely, we also show that if the pointwise Fourier inversion formula is e.v. Cesàro summable of order k, then the distribution is the (k+1)-th derivative of a locally integrable function, and the distribution has a distributional point value of order k+2. We also establish connections between orders of summability and local behavior for other Fourier inversion problems
Cyclin A1 and P450 aromatase promote metastatic homing and growth of stem-like prostate cancer cells in the bone marrow
Bone metastasis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in prostate cancer (PCa). While cancer stem-like cells have been implicated as a cell of origin for PCa metastases, the pathways which enable metastatic development at distal sites remain largely unknown. In this study, we illuminate pathways relevant to bone metastasis in this disease. We observed that cyclin A1 (CCNA1) protein expression was relatively higher in PCa metastatic lesions in lymph node, lung, and bone/bone marrow. In both primary and metastatic tissues, cyclin A1 expression was also correlated with aromatase (CYP19A1), a key enzyme that directly regulates the local balance of androgens to estrogens. Cyclin A1 overexpression in the stem-like ALDHhigh subpopulation of PC3M cells, one model of PCa, enabled bone marrow integration and metastatic growth. Further, cells obtained from bone marrow metastatic lesions displayed self-renewal capability in colony forming assays. In the bone marrow, Cyclin A1 and aromatase enhanced local bone marrow-releasing factors, including androgen receptor, estrogen and matrix metalloproteinase MMP9 and promoted hte metastatic growth of PCa cells. Moreover, ALDHhigh tumor cells expressing elevated levels of aromatase stimulated tumor/host estrogen production and acquired a growth advantage in the presence of host bone marrow cells. Overall, these findings suggest that local production of steroids and MMPs in the bone marrow may provide a suitable microenvironment for ALDHhigh PCa cells to establish metastatic growths, offering new approaches to therapeutically target bone metastases
Radykalizacja antymuzułmańskiego i antyimigranckiego dyskursu w mediach społecznościowych w latach 2016 i 2017 na przykładzie wydarzeń w Ełku
The article presents the incident from Ełk on 1st January 2017. The town with 60,000 inhabitants and six people from Muslim countries experienced anti-Muslim riots after the murder of a young Pole by the kebab bar staff member and an Arab. The authors put forward the thesis that the crucial factor that led to the incident was the prior radicalization of social attitudes. Criminal activities of ISIS, the migration crisis and the terrorist attacks in Europe have aroused fears of immigrants and Muslims in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The anti-Muslim rhetoric was instrumentally used in the election campaign in 2015 (i.a. The KORWiN Party fomented fears of Islam by launching a campaign under the slogan: „Stop Islamization of Poland”). During the campaign in Ełk took place a demonstration against immigrants. Then there was a demonstration against the location of a refugee center in the nearby town Olecko. In March 2016, a group of young people attacked employees of the kebab bar in Ełk. It was the racist attack. The activity in social media contributed to the radicalization of social attitudes. The example of the content provided by a certain politician from Ełk shows the process of spreading xenophobic and Islamophobic content. The consequence of this was the interpretation of the Pole’s murder as a terrorist act and Jihad.Artykuł odnosi się do zdarzeń z Ełku z 1 stycznia 2017 r. Wówczas – w tym 60-tysięcznym mieście, w którym mieszkało sześć osób pochodzących z krajów muzułmańskich – doszło do antymuzułmańskich zamieszek po zabójstwie młodego Polaka przez Araba, pracownika baru z kebabem. Autorzy stawiają tezę, że istotnym czynnikiem, który doprowadził do zajść, była uprzednia radykalizacja nastrojów społecznych. Zbrodnicze działania ISIS, kryzys migracyjny i zamachy terrorystyczne w Europie rozbudziły lęk przed imigrantami i muzułmanami w krajach Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Antymuzułmańska retoryka została instrumentalnie wykorzystana w kampanii wyborczej w 2015 r. (m.in. partia KORWiN prowadziła kampanię pod hasłem „Stop islamizacji Polski”). W tym czasie odbył się w Ełku wiec przeciwko imigrantom. Później w pobliskim Olecku miała miejsce demonstracja przeciwko lokalizacji ośrodka dla uchodźców. W marcu 2016 r. grupa młodych ludzi dokonała, motywowanego rasizmem, napadu na pracowników ełckiego baru z kebabem. Do radykalizacji nastrojów przyczyniła się aktywność w mediach społecznościowych. Na przykładzie treści udostępnianych przez pewnego ełckiego polityka na portalu Facebook ukazano proces rozprzestrzeniania się treści ksenofobicznych i islamofobicznych. Konsekwencją tego była interpretacja zabójstwa Polaka jako aktu terrorystycznego i dżihadu
Dynamic metabolic patterns tracking neurodegeneration and gliosis following 26S proteasome dysfunction in mouse forebrain neurons
Metabolite profling is an important tool that may better capture the multiple features of neurodegeneration. With the considerable parallels between mouse and human metabolism, the use of metabolomics in mouse models with neurodegenerative pathology provides mechanistic insight and ready translation into aspects of human disease. Using 400MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy we have carried out a temporal region-specifc investigation of the metabolome of neuron-specifc 26S proteasome knockout mice characterised by progressive neurodegeneration and Lewy-like inclusion formation in the forebrain. An early signifcant decrease in N-acetyl aspartate revealed evidence of neuronal dysfunction before cell death that may be associated with changes in brain neuroenergetics, underpinning the use of this metabolite to track neuronal health. Importantly, we show early and extensive activation of astrocytes and microglia in response to targeted neuronal dysfunction in this context, but only late changes in myo-inositol; the best established glial cell marker in magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies, supporting recent evidence that additional early neuroinfammatory markers are needed. Our results extend the limited understanding of metabolite changes associated with gliosis and provide evidence that changes in glutamate homeostasis and lactate may correlate with astrocyte activation and have biomarker potential for tracking neuroinfammation
