The SFXC software correlator for Very Long Baseline Interferometry: Algorithms and Implementation
In this paper a description is given of the SFXC software correlator,
developed and maintained at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). The
software is designed to run on generic Linux-based computing clusters. The
correlation algorithm is explained in detail, as are some of the novel modes
that software correlation has enabled, such as wide-field VLBI imaging through
the use of multiple phase centres and pulsar gating and binning. This is
followed by an overview of the software architecture. Finally, the performance
of the correlator as a function of number of CPU cores, telescopes and spectral

Solitary coherent structures in viscoelastic shear flow: computation and mechanism
Starting from stationary bifurcations in Couette-Dean flow, we compute
nontrivial stationary solutions in inertialess viscoelastic circular Couette
flow. These solutions are strongly localized vortex pairs, exist at arbitrarily
large wavelengths, and show hysteresis in the Weissenberg number, similar to
experimentally observed ``diwhirl'' patterns. Based on the computed velocity
and stress fields, we elucidate a heuristic, fully nonlinear mechanism for
these flows. We propose that these localized, fully nonlinear structures
comprise fundamental building blocks for complex spatiotemporal dynamics in the

Dynamical percolation on general trees
H\"aggstr\"om, Peres, and Steif (1997) have introduced a dynamical version of
percolation on a graph . When is a tree they derived a necessary and
sufficient condition for percolation to exist at some time . In the case
that is a spherically symmetric tree, H\"aggstr\"om, Peres, and Steif
(1997) derived a necessary and sufficient condition for percolation to exist at
some time in a given target set . The main result of the present paper
is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of percolation, at
some time , in the case that the underlying tree is not necessary
spherically symmetric. This answers a question of Yuval Peres (personal
communication). We present also a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the

Analysis of the symmetry of electrodes for Electropalatography with Cone Beam CT Scanning
The process of compression of air and vibration of activity in the larynx through which speech is produced is of great interest in phonetics, phonology, psychology and is related to various areas of biomedical engineering as it has a strong relationship with cochlear implants, Parkinson’s disease and Stroke. One technique by means of which speech production is analysed is the use of electropalatography, in which an artificial palate, moulded to the speakers’ hard palate is introduced in the mouth. The palate contains a series of electrodes, which monitor contact between the tongue and the palate during speech production. There is interest in the symmetry or asymmetry of the movement of the tongue as this may be related to languages or right- or left-handedness, however this has never been thoroughly studied. A specific limitation of electropalatography for symmetry studies is that palates are hand-crafted and the position of the electrodes themselves may be asymmetric. In this work, we analyse the positioning of electrodes of one electropalatography setting. The symmetry was analysed by locating the electrodes of the palate through the observation of the palate with Computed Tomography. An algorithm to segment the electrodes and find the symmetry of left and right sides of the palates is described. No significant asymmetry was found for one specific palate. The methodology presented should allow the analysis of palates to be used in larger studies of speech production
Morphological population balance modelling of the effect of crystallisation environment on the evolution of crystal size and shape of para-aminobenzoic acid
A current morphological population balance (MPB) modelling methodology, which integrates crystal morphology, facet growth kinetics with multi-dimensional population balance, is overviewed and demonstrated, hence providing an attractive approach for modelling crystallisation processes. MPB modelling is applied to simulate the batch crystallisation of the alpha-form of para-aminobenzoic acid from ethanolic solutions as a function of the crystallisation environment including cooling rate, seeding temperature and seed conditions (loading, size and shape). The evolution of crystal shape/size and their distributions revealed that higher loading led to smaller and less needle-like crystals with similar yields, hence potentially being an important parameter for process control. Examination of the development of the fracture surface for broken seeds, mimicking the seed conditions after milling in practice in the simulated processes, demonstrated that these faces grew fast and then rapidly disappeared from the external crystal morphology. Restriction and challenges inherent in the current model are also highlighted
Dileptons from hot heavy static photons
We compute the production rate of lepton pair by static photons at finite
temperature at two-loop order. We treat the infrared region of the gluon phase
space carefully by using a hard thermal loop gluon propagator. The result is
free of infrared and collinear divergences and exhibits an enhancement which
produces a result of order instead of as would be

Actinopolyspora algeriensis sp. nov., a novel halophilic actinomycete isolated from a Saharan soil
A halophilic actinomycete strain designated H19T, was isolated from a Saharan soil in the Bamendil region (Ouargla province, South Algeria) and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. The morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the
strain were consistent with those of members of the genus
Actinopolyspora, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed that strain H19T was a novel species of the genus
Actinopolyspora. DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain H19T and the nearest Actinopolyspora species, A. halophila, was clearly below the 70 % threshold. The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that the organism represents a novel species of the genus Actinopolyspora for which the name Actinopolyspora algeriensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain H19T (= DSM 45476T = CCUG 62415T)
Orexin receptors exert a neuroprotective effect in Alzheimer's disease (AD) via heterodimerization with GPR103
Orexins are neuropeptides that regulate the sleep-wake cycle and feeding behaviour. QRFP is a newly discovered neuropeptide which exerts similar orexigenic activity, thus playing an important role in energy homeostasis and regulation of appetite. The exact expression and signalling characteristics and physiological actions of QRFP and its receptor GPR103 are poorly understood. Alzheimerâ €™ s disease (AD) patients experience increased nocturnal activity, excessive daytime sleepiness, and weight loss. We hypothesised therefore that orexins and QRFP might be implicated in the pathophysiology of AD. We report that the down-regulation of hippocampal orexin receptors (OXRs) and GPR103 particularly in the cornu ammonis (CA) subfield from AD patients suffering from early onset familial AD (EOFAD) and late onset familial AD (LOAD). Using an in vitro model we demonstrate that this downregulation is due to to Aβ-plaque formation and tau hyper-phosphorylation. Transcriptomics revealed a neuroprotective role for both orexins and QRFP. Finally we provide conclusive evidence using BRET and FRET that OXRs and GPR103 form functional hetero-dimers to exert their effects involving activation of ERK 1/2. Pharmacological intervention directed at the orexigenic system may prove to be an attractive avenue towards the discovery of novel therapeutics for diseases such as AD and improving neuroprotective signalling pathways
The conserved histone chaperone LIN-53 is required for normal lifespan and maintenance of muscle integrity in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Whether extension of lifespan provides an extended time without health deteriorations is an important issue for human aging. However, to which degree lifespan and aspects of healthspan regulation might be linked is not well understood. Chromatin factors could be involved in linking both aging aspects, as epigenetic mechanisms bridge regulation of different biological processes. The epigenetic factor LIN-53 (RBBP4/7) associates with different chromatin-regulating complexes to safeguard cell identities in Caenorhabditis elegans as well as mammals, and has a role in preventing memory loss and premature aging in humans. We show that LIN-53 interacts with the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) complex in C. elegans muscles to ensure functional muscles during postembryonic development and in adults. While mutants for other NuRD members show a normal lifespan, animals lacking LIN-53 die early because LIN-53 depletion affects also the histone deacetylase complex Sin3, which is required for a normal lifespan. To determine why lin-53 and sin-3 mutants die early, we performed transcriptome and metabolomic analysis revealing that levels of the disaccharide trehalose are significantly decreased in both mutants. As trehalose is required for normal lifespan in C. elegans, lin-53 and sin-3 mutants could be rescued by either feeding with trehalose or increasing trehalose levels via the insulin/IGF1 signaling pathway. Overall, our findings suggest that LIN-53 is required for maintaining lifespan and muscle integrity through discrete chromatin regulatory mechanisms. Since both LIN-53 and its mammalian homologs safeguard cell identities, it is conceivable that its implication in lifespan regulation is also evolutionarily conserved
