Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXV. q_crit, epsilon(q), and Mass-Radius
We report on successes and failures in searching for positive superhumps in
cataclysmic variables, and show the superhumping fraction as a function of
orbital period. Basically, all short-period systems do, all long-period systems
don't, and a 50% success rate is found at P_orb=3.1+-0.2 hr. We can use this to
measure the critical mass ratio for the creation of superhumps. With a
mass-radius relation appropriate for cataclysmic variables, and an assumed mean
white-dwarf mass of 0.75 M_sol, we find a mass ratio q_crit=0.35+-0.02.
We also report superhump studies of several stars of independently known mass
ratio: OU Virginis, XZ Eridani, UU Aquarii, and KV UMa (= XTE J1118+480). The
latter two are of special interest, because they represent the most extreme
mass ratios for which accurate superhump measurements have been made. We use
these to improve the epsilon(q) calibration, by which we can infer the elusive
q from the easy-to-measure epsilon (the fractional period excess of P_superhump
over P_orb). This relation allows mass and radius estimates for the secondary
star in any CV showing superhumps. The consequent mass-radius law shows an
apparent discontinuity in radius near 0.2 M_sol, as predicted by the disrupted
magnetic braking model for the 2.1-2.7 hour period gap. This is effectively the
"empirical main sequence" for CV secondaries.Comment: PDF, 45 pages, 9 tables, 12 figures; accepted, in press, to appear

The PHD Domain of Np95 (mUHRF1) Is Involved in Large-Scale Reorganization of Pericentromeric Heterochromatin
Heterochromatic chromosomal regions undergo large-scale reorganization and progressively aggregate, forming chromocenters. These are dynamic structures that rapidly adapt to various stimuli that influence gene expression patterns, cell cycle progression, and differentiation. Np95-ICBP90 (m- and h-UHRF1) is a histone-binding protein expressed only in proliferating cells. During pericentromeric heterochromatin (PH) replication, Np95 specifically relocalizes to chromocenters where it highly concentrates in the replication factories that correspond to less compacted DNA. Np95 recruits HDAC and DNMT1 to PH and depletion of Np95 impairs PH replication. Here we show that Np95 causes large-scale modifications of chromocenters independently from the H3:K9 and H4:K20 trimethylation pathways, from the expression levels of HP1, from DNA methylation and from the cell cycle. The PHD domain is essential to induce this effect. The PHD domain is also required in vitro to increase access of a restriction enzyme to DNA packaged into nucleosomal arrays. We propose that the PHD domain of Np95-ICBP90 contributes to the opening and/or stabilization of dense chromocenter structures to support the recruitment of modifying enzymes, like HDAC and DNMT1, required for the replication and formation of PH
First asteroid gas sample delivered by the Hayabusa2 mission:A treasure box from Ryugu
「はやぶさ2」ミッションによる世界初の小惑星からのガスサンプル:リュウグウからのたまて箱. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-10-21.The Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu on 6 December 2020. One day after the recovery, the gas species retained in the sample container were extracted and measured on-site and stored in gas collection bottles. The container gas consists of helium and neon with an extraterrestrial ³He/⁴He and ²⁰Ne/²²Ne ratios, along with some contaminant terrestrial atmospheric gases. A mixture of solar and Earth’s atmospheric gas is the best explanation for the container gas composition. Fragmentation of Ryugu grains within the sample container is discussed on the basis of the estimated amount of indigenous He and the size distribution of the recovered Ryugu grains. This is the first successful return of gas species from a near-Earth asteroid
