The Effect Of Trade In Demand For Skill In Emerging Economies

This dissertation explores the effect of trade in demand for skill in an unskilled labor abundant country. I use the case of Mexico to document that exporters are on average more skill-intensive than non exporters, yet conditional on exporting skill intensity is negatively correlated with export sales. I build a model to explain these two observations simultaneously and estimate it for two Mexican manufacturing industries in 2003. A counterfactual analysis illustrates that when trade costs decrease, resources are reallocated to the most skilled-intensive firms within industries but toward the unskilled-intensive tasks within industries. When trade costs are high, the first effect dominates and skill premium increases. When trade costs are sufficiently low, comparative advantage in unskilled intensive activities dominates and skill premium decreases. This pattern matches the observed behavior of skill premium in Mexican manufacturing industry following trade liberalization reforms

Parametric downconversion with optimized spectral properties in nonlinear photonic crystals

We study the joint spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal in a collinear, degenerate, type-II geometry. We show that the photonic crystal properties may be exploited to compensate for material dispersion and obtain photon pairs that are nearly factorable, in principle, for arbitrary materials and spectral regions, limited by the ability to fabricate the nonlinear crystal with the required periodic variation in the refractive indices for the ordinary and extraordinary waves.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

Journalistic translation and tribalisation: a study of the international depictions of the Catalan independence conflict as represented in the Spanish digital press.

Over the last few years, the role of journalistic translation as an instrument to mediate between different cultures and societies from all over the world has grown considerably due to the constant development of new communication channels that contribute to the dissemination of information. Consequently, there is a need to carry out further research in this area of study. The present dissertation analyses the process of translation of a number of international news concerning the Catalan independence conflict performed by the Spanish press to generate news articles that compile information fragments from different journalistic sources. The analysis comprises a comparative study of the selection of the information that will be translated, as well as an examination of the most prominent translation techniques used to elaborate the target reports, with the aim of evaluating whether the Spanish reports portray international points of view or adapts their content to the newspapers' editorial line through a process of tribalisation

El empleo de la terapia de presión negativa es una opción ampliamente extendida para el manejo de heridas crónicas, promueve la curación mediante la aplicación de presión negativa, de manera que el uso de niveles controlados de presión subatmosférica y succión controlada, acelera la resolución de las mismas favoreciendo la vascularización y el desbridamiento. Actualmente, este sistema se considera una intervención fundamental en el tratamiento de las heridas complejas, las cuales suponen un reto terapéutico importante y muchas veces generan un largo y costoso egreso hospitalario. Gracias a la terapia de vacío se puede disminuir el tamaño de dichas heridas a la par que se protegen de la infección, haciendo innecesario el uso prioritario de colgajos libres y grandes intervenciones. La terapia de presión negativa se remonta a miles de años atrás, se utilizó por primera vez como tratamiento complementario; a nivel básico, la presión negativa constituye un apósito sofisticado, estéril y cerrado con propiedades que hacen que el entorno para la cicatrización de la herida sea húmedo

The Biased Language in Media Commentary at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games

This paper examines the media commentary at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. It focuses on the commentary of five sports: Women’s Snowboarding Halfpipe, Men’s Snowboarding Halfpipe, Individual Figure Skating, Pairs Figure Skating, and Curling. The goal of this paper is to study the language choices that the media commentators made and uncover the gender bias within their language. The differences in how the commentators discuss athletes is significant to understand because it reveals the overall gender bias in sports that is still present in our society today

Mapeo sistemático de la literatura sobre evaluación docente (2013-2017)

International research has shown that it is possible to maintain quality education without external educational evaluations; however, evaluation is increasingly being considered by educational systems as a support for teacher professionalization. The objective of this article is to characterize the scientific production on teaching evaluation published in the five-year period between 2013 and 2017, based on the inclusion criteria of the Scopus and Web of Science databases and thematic and duplicate exclusion criteria. Through the methodology of systematic literature mapping, 106 articles were found, and the the main languages and countries in which the scientific production on teacher evaluation has been produced, their accessibility and types of work produced were identified. The topics of greater impact were identified and classified according to consolidated and emerging lines of research. It is concluded that there is an underdevelopment of lines of research that link teacher evaluation to the professionalization of teaching, and that the concern regarding the quality of evaluation processes and instruments remains current in scientific production. The systematic mapping of literature offers a careful selection of works of production on the subject and enables researchers and interested readers to trace precise paths of inquiry.Las investigaciones internacionales muestran que es posible mantener una educación de calidad prescindiendo de evaluaciones docentes externas; sin embargo, la evaluación comienza a ser considerada por los sistemas educativos como soporte para la profesionalización docente. El objetivo del presente artículo es caracterizar la producción científica sobre evaluación docente, publicada en el quinquenio 2013-2017, considerando criterios de inclusión de las bases de datos Scopus y Web of Science y criterios de exclusión temáticos y duplicados. A través de la metodología del mapeo sistemático de literatura se ubicaron 106 artículos donde se identificaron los principales idiomas y países en los que se realiza la producción científica sobre evaluación docente, la accesibilidad y tipos de trabajos que se han producido, se identifican los temas de mayor impacto y se clasifican de acuerdo con líneas de investigación que se encuentran en consolidación y en estado emergente. Se concluye que hay un subdesarrollo de líneas de investigación que asocien la evaluación docente con la profesionalización de la docencia y que en la producción científica continúa vigente la preocupación sobre la calidad de los procesos e instrumentos de evaluación. El mapeo sistemático de literatura ofrece una selección cuidadosa de trabajos de la producción en el tema y posibilita a investigadores y lectores interesados el trazado de rutas de indagación precisas

Studies on Poly(ADP-ribose) Metabolism and Chromatin Structure

In these studies, a procedure which allowed the in vivo labeling and detection of poly(ADP-ribose) was combined with nuclear fractionation techniques to analyze the nuclear distribution of ADP-ribose polymers. The results from these studies suggest the occurrence of poly(ADP-ribose) metabolism in two compartments of chromatin; one that is nuclear matrix-associated and one that is not. The biological significance of this compartmentalization is conceptualization in a model. This model postulates that, under some physiological conditions, poly(ADP-ribose) metabolism accomplishes the reversible targeting of specific regions of chromatin to the nuclear matrix domain by modulating DNA-protein and or protein-protein interactions

Estudio experimental del primer recuerdo

¿Cuál es el primer recuerdo que aparece en nuestra conciencia como primero, a partir del cual no podemos retrotraernos sin caer en un vacío infinito y una oscuridad absoluta? Este interrogante ha sido investigado por di versos autores; citemos los estudios de V. y C. Henri, Kammel, Miles, Dumesnil, Colegovre, etc.; pero sus conclusiones, aun juzgándolas muy valiosas, son tal vez limitadas y no generalizables, tanto por someter a examen escaso número de sujetos como por tratar muy pocas cuestiones. Estas se multiplican extraordinariamente, preguntándonos: ¿Cuál es el contenido de este primer recuerdo? ¿Qué estado de ánimo le acompaña? ¿Podemos señalar límites de edad, claros, en su producción? ¿Cómo explicar la conservación de unos recuerdos y el olvido de otros? ¿Qué causas justifican la amnesia infantil? ¿Existe relación entre la edad del recuerdo y la claridad del mismo? Todas estas incógnitas y otras muchas surgen al pensar en los recuerdos infantiles y su persistencia a través del tiempo
