Temperature-Induced Changes in the Oxygen Equilibrium Curve of the Blood of the Brown Bullhead, Ictalurus Nebulosus
The affinity of blood for oxygen is dependent on temperature, which would seem to present a disadvantage to those fishes which encounter large seasonal temperature changes. Considering the well-known acclimatory abilities of many fishes, it would seem reasonable to propose the occurrence of seasonal modification of blood oxygen equilibria to compensate for changes in temperature. 2. In Ictalurus nebulosus, blood from one group of fish acclimated at 24 degrees C showed a consistently higher oxygen affinity compared with a group acclimated at 9 degrees C, when measured at the same temperature. This shift, accompanying thermal metabolic acclimation, minimizes the effect of temperature on oxygen affinity. 3. The shift did not persist when dilute solutions of hemoglobin were studied. 4. No changes with acclimation were seen in the multiple hemoglobin pattern nor in blood pH. 5. The erythrocyte, rather than the plasma, appears to be the site of modification. 6. Some large changes in erythrocyte potassium accompanied thermal acclimation, but the relation of this to the shift in oxygen affinity is unknown
A Fetal-Maternal Shift of Blood Oxygen Affinity in an Australian Viviparous Lizard, Sphenomorphus quoyii (Reptilia, Scincidae)
Compared to adults, the oxygen affinity of blood from fetal Sphenomorphus quoyii is very much higher: P50 is approximately 70 Torr in adults and 30 Torr in nearly full term embryos (PC02= 17 Torr, T=34 degrees C). Following birth, oxygen affinity decreases gradually and adult values are approached after about 15 weeks, with the onset of winter retreat. Electrophoresis revealed a multiple hemoglobin system in both adults and embryos, but there were no apparent differences between them
Causal structure of acoustic spacetimes
The so-called ``analogue models of general relativity'' provide a number of
specific physical systems, well outside the traditional realm of general
relativity, that nevertheless are well-described by the differential geometry
of curved spacetime. Specifically, the propagation of acoustic disturbances in
moving fluids are described by ``effective metrics'' that carry with them
notions of ``causal structure'' as determined by an exchange of sound signals.
These acoustic causal structures serve as specific examples of what can be done
in the presence of a Lorentzian metric without having recourse to the Einstein
equations of general relativity. (After all, the underlying fluid mechanics is
governed by the equations of traditional hydrodynamics, not by the Einstein
equations.) In this article we take a careful look at what can be said about
the causal structure of acoustic spacetimes, focusing on those containing sonic
points or horizons, both with a view to seeing what is different from standard

Phylogeny of Echinoderm Hemoglobins
Recent genomic information has revealed that neuroglobin and cytoglobin are the two principal lineages of vertebrate hemoglobins, with the latter encompassing the familiar myoglobin and α-globin/β-globin tetramer hemoglobin, and several minor groups. In contrast, very little is known about hemoglobins in echinoderms, a phylum of exclusively marine organisms closely related to vertebrates, beyond the presence of coelomic hemoglobins in sea cucumbers and brittle stars. We identified about 50 hemoglobins in sea urchin, starfish and sea cucumber genomes and transcriptomes, and used Bayesian inference to carry out a molecular phylogenetic analysis of their relationship to vertebrate sequences, specifically, to assess the hypothesis that the neuroglobin and cytoglobin lineages are also present in echinoderms.The genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus encodes several hemoglobins, including a unique chimeric 14-domain globin, 2 androglobin isoforms and a unique single androglobin domain protein. Other strongylocentrotid genomes appear to have similar repertoires of globin genes. We carried out molecular phylogenetic analyses of 52 hemoglobins identified in sea urchin, brittle star and sea cucumber genomes and transcriptomes, using different multiple sequence alignment methods coupled with Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches. The results demonstrate that there are two major globin lineages in echinoderms, which are related to the vertebrate neuroglobin and cytoglobin lineages. Furthermore, the brittle star and sea cucumber coelomic hemoglobins appear to have evolved independently from the cytoglobin lineage, similar to the evolution of erythroid oxygen binding globins in cyclostomes and vertebrates.The presence of echinoderm globins related to the vertebrate neuroglobin and cytoglobin lineages suggests that the split between neuroglobins and cytoglobins occurred in the deuterostome ancestor shared by echinoderms and vertebrates
Studying X-ray burst nucleosynthesis in the laboratory
Type I X-ray bursts are the most common explosions in the Galaxy; however, the nucleosynthesis that occurs during the thermonuclear runaway and explosion is poorly understood. In this proceedings we discuss current experimental efforts and techniques that are being used to study X-ray burst nucleosynthesis in the laboratory. Specifically, radioactive ion beam techniques that have recently been developed have allowed the study of some of the most important (α, p) reactions in X-ray bursts for the first time. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
The 20Ne(d,p)21Ne transfer reaction in relation to the s-process abundances
A study of the 20Ne(d,p)21Ne transfer reaction was performed using the Quadrupole Dipole Dipole Dipole (Q3D) magnetic spectrograph in Garching, Germany. The experiment probed excitation energies in 21Ne ranging from 6.9 MeV to 8.5 MeV. The aim was to investigate the spectroscopic information of 21Ne within the Gamow window of core helium burning in massive stars. Further information in this region will help reduce the uncertainties on the extrapolation down to Gamow window cross sections of the 17O(α,γ)21Ne reaction. In low metallicity stars, this reaction has a direct impact on s-process abundances by determining the fate of 16O as either a neutron poison or a neutron absorber. The experiment used a 22-MeV deuteron beam, with intensities varying from 0.5-1 μA, and an implanted target of 20Ne of 7 μg/cm2 in 40 μg/cm2 carbon foils. Sixteen 21Ne peaks have been identified in the Ex = 6.9-8.5 MeV range, of which only thirteen peaks correspond to known states. Only the previously-known Ex = 7.960 MeV state was observed within the Gamow window

The increasing acceptance of the principle of sustainable development
has been a major driving force towards new approaches to energy planning. This
is a complex process involving multiple and conflicting objectives, in which many
agents were able to influence decisions. The integration of environmental, social and
economic issues in decision making, although fundamental, is not an easy task, and
tradeoffsmust be made. The increasing importance of social aspects adds additional
complexity to the traditional models that must now deal with variables recognizably
difficult to measure in a quantitative scale. This study explores the issue of the social
impact, as a fundamental aspect of the electricity planning process, aiming to give a
measurable interpretation of the expected social impact of future electricity scenarios.
A structured methodology, based on a combination of the Analytic Hierarchy
Process and Delphi process, is proposed. The methodology is applied for the social
evaluation of future electricity scenarios in Portugal, resulting in the elicitation and
assignment of average social impact values for these scenarios. The proposed tool
offers guidance to decision makers and presents a clear path to explicitl
