No podemos
Broad iron emission line and kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations in the neutron star system 4U 1636-53
Both the broad iron (Fe) line and the frequency of the kilohertz
quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries
(LMXBs) can potentially provide independent measures of the inner radius of the
accretion disc. We use XMM-Newton and simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
observations of the LMXB 4U 1636-53 to test this hypothesis. We study the
properties of the Fe-K emission line as a function of the spectral state of the
source and the frequency of the kHz QPOs. We find that the inner radius of the
accretion disc deduced from the frequency of the upper kHz QPO varies as a
function of the position of the source in the colour-colour diagram, in
accordance with previous work and with the standard scenario of accretion disc
geometry. On the contrary, the inner disc radius deduced from the profile of
the Fe line is not correlated with the spectral state of the source. The values
of the inner radius inferred from kHz QPOs and Fe lines, in four observations,
do not lead to a consistent value of the neutron star mass, regardless of the
model used to fit the Fe line. Our results suggest that either the kHz QPO or
the standard relativistic Fe line interpretation does not apply for this
system. Furthermore, the simultaneous detection of kHz QPOs and broad Fe lines
is difficult to reconcile with models in which the broadening of the Fe line is
due to the reprocessing of photons in an outflowing wind.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
Use of Mutual Coupling to Decrease Parasitic Inductance of Shunt Capacitor Filters
In this paper, we propose and study several new designs of a shunt capacitor filter with two surface-mount technology capacitors. These designs make use of mutual inductance effects to increase the attenuation provided by the filter in the range of high frequencies where the filter behaves inductively. We provide lumped element circuitmodels for the proposed designs that allow identification of the key inductive parameters that determine the high-frequency performance of these filters. We obtain the equa- tions relating these parameters to the effective inductance of the filter, which can be used to compare the high-frequency behavior of different filter designs. We have fabricated and measured several compact shunt capacitor filters with improved performance at high frequencies. We have found that, compared with a shunt capacitor filter with one capacitor, a proper filter design with two capacitors can easily increase in 15–20 dB the high-frequency attenuation provided by the filter. This design also outperforms by 10–15 dB a traditional shunt capacitor filter with two capacitors closely placed. Moreover, this improvement is obtained with no increase in size, cost, or time of design of the filter.Ministerio de Economía Y Competitividad TEC2014-54097-
Enhancing Historical Reasoning: A Strategy Including Formative Assessment with Systematic Continuous Feedback
Learning History promotes students’ reasoning. According to Van Drie & Van Boxtel (2008), historical reasoning involves six elements: substantive concepts, metaconcepts, asking historical questions, using sources, contextualization, and argumentation. Although there are didactic strategies that promote historical reasoning, these do not include systematic continuous feedback using rubrics, which can be useful both in assessing and promoting students’ progress and progression of ideas on metaconcepts. This study described the development of the six historical reasoning elements in a strategy that included formative assessment for K8 students. A case study was carried out in Mexico City: four teams of three students were formed according to their knowledge of history, with a single History teacher providing continuous systematic feedback on metaconcepts by using graded rubrics. Results showed that the six historical reasoning elements were developed in different ways and suggested possible methods for use in future didactics
