    Get PDF
Author Institution: Department of Biology, Denison UniversityNeutron activation analysis was used to assay trace quantities of aluminum in postmortem human lung tissue samples. Dried accurately weighed lung tissue samples were activated in a 3.3 x 1()13 neutrons/cm2/sec thermal neutron flux and analyzed using a lithiumdrifted germanium detector and 4096 channel gamma spectrophotometer. The 1778 kcv gamma photon emitted by Al28 was quantified using the comparator technique with highly purified aluminum cyclohexane butyrate as the Al standard. The aluminum content of human lung tissue was shown not to be related to occupational exposure to industrial fiberglass. Residents of Akron, Ohio, were shown to have significantly higher concentrations of aluminum in their lungs than do residents of Newark, Ohio. A set of normal concentrations for aluminum in postmortem human lung tissue was developed, based on neutron activation analysis. The relative simplicity, accuracy, and precision of this technique suggest its use in further studies of this type

Caudal cruciate ligament (CaCL) rupture is uncommon in dogs and usually occurs with a concurrent rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL). A 10-month-old cross-bred dog was presented with left hind limb lameness. Orthopaedic examination revealed positive craniocaudal drawer sign in the left stifle. Arthrotomy confirmed CrCL rupture, and showed CaCL avulsion fracture at its origin. The stifle was stabilized using extracapsular lateral fabellotibial suture. Eight months postoperatively the dog was free of obvious lameness and remained sound until the last re-evaluation (3 years). This case raises the possibility that restoration of the CaCL function is not always essential for animals’ successful outcome

Touch during mother-infant interactions: Influences of maternal unavailability and risk status

Mother-infant interactions are fundamental to infant social-emotional development. Touch is an influential channel through which mothers and their infants convey emotion and affection and establish a strong connection. In a series of two studies, the types of maternal touch and the functions of mutual touch during mother-infant interactions were investigated. Further, touch in at-risk populations (e.g., depressed mothers, VLBW/preterm infants) and the relationship between the quality of the dyadic relationship and touch were examined in order to elucidate the association between relationship indicators on tactile communication. Study 1 examined maternal touching in 41 mothers with and without depressive symptomatology. Mothers and their 4-month-old infants participated in the Still-Face (maternal emotional unavailability) and the Separation (maternal physical unavailability) procedures. The types of mother touch were coded using the Caregiver-Infant Touch Scale (CITS; Jean, Stack, & Fogel, 2009; Stack, 2010; Stack, LePage, Hains, & Muir, 1996). Study 2 examined the communicative functions of mutual touching during the Still-Face procedure between mothers and their 5½-month-old full-term (n = 40) and very low-birthweight/preterm (VLBW/preterm; n = 40) infants. The functions of mutual touch were coded using the Functions of Mutual Touch Scale (FMTS; Mantis, Burnside, & Stack, 2012) and the quality of the mother-infant relationship (emotional availability) was coded using an adapted version of the Emotional Availability Scales Coding Guidelines (EA Scales; Biringen, Robinson, & Emde, 1988, 1998), an observational and relational measure designed to rate dimensions of maternal emotional availability and child behavior. Results from Study 1 indicated that mothers with higher levels of depressive symptoms engaged in less touching following the perturbation in the Still-Face procedure, whereas mothers with lower levels of depressive symptoms maintained stable levels of touching across both interaction periods. Mothers with higher levels of depressive symptoms displayed less playful/stimulating types of touching. Results from Study 2 indicated that full-term infant-mother dyads spent significantly more time engaged in playful and regulatory mutual touch compared to VLBW/preterm infant-mother dyads who spent significantly more time engaged in attention-centered, unbalanced, and guided mutual touch. Higher levels of maternal sensitivity and regulatory mutual touch were associated for full-term infant-mother dyads, while lower levels of maternal sensitivity were associated with unbalanced mutual touch for VLBW/preterm infant-mother dyads. Together, the findings provide insight into how both mothers and infants participate in shaping and co-regulating their interactions through the use of touch. By identifying the patterns of maternal touch and the functions of mutual touch present during different contexts in both typically developing and at-risk dyads, we are able to identify disrupted patterns of communication. Ultimately, findings have direct implications for parenting practices and for the design of preventative intervention programs of early touch stimulation for at-risk infants and their parents

Persistent isolated hypocortisolism following brief treatment with trilostane

A 12-year-old male neutered Miniature Poodle with confirmed pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism was treated with trilostane. After three doses, it developed clinical and laboratory changes suggestive of isolated hypocortisolism ('atypical hypoadrenocorticism'), which persisted and progressed for more than 3 months despite immediate withdrawal of the trilostane. The clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism resolved without further trilostane. After 3 months, prednisolone treatment was started and the clinical signs of hypocortisolism resolved. Prednisolone therapy was required for more than 1 year. Ultrasonography initially demonstrated large hypoechoic adrenal cortices, typical of dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, which then became small and heteroechoic, consistent with the development of adrenal necrosis. Persistent isolated hypocortisolism has not been reported previously as a complication of trilostane therapy. The case is also remarkable for the very short duration of trilostane therapy that elicited this complication. Clinicians should be aware that trilostane therapy may result in adrenal necrosis, even in the very earliest stages of therapy, but prompt action can prevent a life-threatening situation

The effects of a psychological skills training program on the cohesion of a men's soccer team

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a psychological skills training program on the cohesion of a men's soccer team during a playing season. Thirty subjects were divided into an experimental group (first team) and a control group (reserve team).  All subjects were measured on cohesiveness items before, in the middle, and after a seven-month psychological intervention program. Seven items were used from Sports Cohesion Questionnaire (SCQ) to measure the cohesion of the team by including both social and task elements. Test data were collected and analyzed. It was found that participants (first team players) in the seven-month intervention program did exhibit increased cohesiveness among team members and between team members and the coach. There are many positive consequences associated with enhanced team cohesion. Coaches should work to increase the task and social cohesion among members of soccer teams. Mutual Touch during Mother-Infant Face-to-Face Still-Face Interactions: Influences of Interaction Period and Infant Birth Status

Contact behaviours such as touch, have been shown to be influential channels of nonverbal communication between mothers and infants. While existing research has examined the communicative roles of maternal or infant touch in isolation, mutual touch, whereby touching behaviours occur simultaneously between mothers and their infants, has yet to be examined. The present study was designed to investigate mutual touch during face-to-face interactions between mothers and their 5 ½ -month-old full-term (n = 40), very low birth weight/preterm (VLBW/preterm; n = 40) infants, and infants at psychosocial risk (n = 41). Objectives were to examine: (1) how the quantitative and qualitative aspects of touch employed by mothers and their infants varied across the normal periods of the still-face (SF) procedure and how these were associated with risk status, and (2) the association between co-touch and the quality of the mother-child relationship. Mutual touch was systematically coded using the Co-Touch Scale (Mantis, Ng, Stack, 2010). Interactions were found to largely consist of mutual contact and mutual touch, highlighting that active co-touching is pervasive during mother-infant interactions. Consistent with the literature, while the SF period did not negatively affect the amount of mutual touch engaged in for mothers and their full-term infants and mothers and their infants at psychosocial risk, it did for mothers and their VLBW/preterm infants. Together, results illuminate how both mothers and infants participate in shaping and co-regulating their interactions through the use of touch and underscore the contribution of examining the impact of birth status on mutual touch
