    Taking stock and re-examining the role of science communication

    Eight science communication research projects have been funded by the European Commission since 2018. These projects are a response to one of the European Commission's 'Science with and for Society' (SwafS) funding calls Âż 'SwafS-19: Taking stock and re-examining the role of science communication.' Together these projects have received almost Âż10 million in research funding, and each has been affected to some extent by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper provides an overview of the eight projects, how they adapted to the challenges caused by the pandemic, and the subsequent implications for science communication policy and research funding

    Timing of initiation of oral anticoagulants in patients with acute ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation comparing posterior and anterior circulation strokes

    Background: The aim of this study in patients with acute posterior ischemic stroke (PS) and atrial fibrillation (AF) were to evaluate the risks of recurrent ischemic event and severe bleeding and these risks in relation with oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) and its timing. Methods: Patients with PS were prospectively included; the outcome events of these patients were compared with those of patients with anterior stroke (AS) which were taken from previous registries. The primary outcome was the composite of: stroke recurrence, TIA, symptomatic systemic embolism, symptomatic cerebral bleeding and major extracranial bleeding occurring within 90 days from acute stroke. Results: A total of 2,470 patients were available for the analysis: 473 (19.1%) with PS and 1,997 (80.9%) AS. Over 90 days, 213 (8.6%) primary outcome events were recorded: 175 (8.7%) in patients with AS and 38 (8.0%) in those with PS. In patients who initiated OAT within 2 days, the primary outcome occurred in 5 out of 95 patients (5.3%) with PS compared to 21 out of 373 patients (4.3%) with AS (OR 1.07; 95% CI 0.39-2.94). In patients who initiated OAT between days 3 and 7, the primary outcome occurred in 3 out of 103 patients (2.9%) with PS compared to 26 out of 490 patients (5.3%) with AS (OR 0.54; 95% CI 0.16-1.80). Conclusions: Patients with posterior or anterior stroke and AF appear to have similar risks of ischemic or hemorrhagic events at 90 days with no difference concerning the timing of initiation of OAT

    Ten millennia of hepatitis B virus evolution

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene. After the European Neolithic transition, Mesolithic HBV strains were replaced by a lineage likely disseminated by early farmers that prevailed throughout western Eurasia for ~4000 years, declining around the end of the 2nd millennium BCE. The only remnant of this prehistoric HBV diversity is the rare genotype G, which appears to have reemerged during the HIV pandemic

Francesco D’Andria, dalle chiese rupestri di S. Maria degli Angeli e dei Ss. Stefani e, infine, dall’area naturalistica attrezzata dell’Arboreto didattico. Questo nucleo di beni culturali ed ambientali è contraddistinto da una segnaletica in magenta, colore che identifica Poggiardo nell’ambito del SAC, Sistema Ambientale e Culturale delle Serre Salentine. L’istituzione del Sistema Museale rappresenta un importante risultato cui si giunge dopo alcuni decenni di ricerche ed opere di tutela e valorizzazione condotte nell’ambito di una proficua collaborazione tra enti territoriali, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e il Turismo, Università del Salento

    Measurements and Simulations on the Mechanisms of Efficiency Losses in HIT Solar Cells

    We study the electrical and the optical behavior of HIT solar cell by means of measurements and optoelectrical simulations by TCAD simulations. We compare the HIT solar cell with a conventional crystalline silicon solar cell to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the HIT technology. Results highlight different mechanisms of electrical and optical efficiency losses caused by the presence of the amorphous silicon layer. The higher resistivity of the a-Si layers implies a smaller distance between the metal lines that causes a higher shadowing. The worst optical coupling between the amorphous silicon and the antireflective coating implies a slight increase of reflectivity around the 600 nm wavelength

    In 2010, Italian health professionals rapidly implemented the one-step screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on a 75 g OGTT, to comply with the diagnostic criteria proposed by the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG). The change was promoted by the two main Italian scientific societies of diabetology, Associazione Medici Diabetologi (AMD) and SocietĂ  Italiana di Diabetologia (SID), and it took just a few months for the Istituto Superiore di SanitĂ , together with several scientific societies, to revise the criteria and include them in the National Guidelines System. Over the last 9 years, the implementation of these guidelines has shown some benefits and some drawbacks

    Long-term consequences of cervical artery dissection (CeAD), a major cause of ischemic stroke in young people, have been poorly investigated. The Italian Project on Stroke at Young Age – Cervical Artery Dissection (IPSYS CeAD) project is a multicenter, hospital-based, consecutively recruiting, observational, cohort study aimed to address clinically important questions about long-term outcome of CeAD patients, which are not covered by other large-scale registries. Patients with radiologically diagnosed CeAD were consecutively included in the registry. Baseline demographic and clinical variables, as well as information on risk factors, were systematically collected for each eligible patient. Follow-up evaluations were conducted between 3 and 6 months after the initial event (t1) and then annually (t2 at 1 year, t3 at 2 years , and so on), in order to assess outcome events (long-term recurrent CeAD, any fatal/ nonfatal ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or other arterial thrombotic event, and death from any cause). Between 2000 and 2019, data from 1530 patients (age at diagnosis, 47.2 ± 11.5 years; women, 660 [43.1%]) have been collected at 39 Italian neurological centers. Dissection involved a single vessel in 1308 (85.5%) cases and caused brain ischemia in 1303 (85.1%) (190 TIA/1113 ischemic stroke). Longitudinal data are available for 1414 (92.4%) patients (median follow-up time in patients who did not experience recurrent events, 36.0 months [25th to 75th percentile, 63.0]). The collaborative IPSYS CeAD effort will provide novel information on the long-term outcome of CeAD patients. This could allow for tailored treatment approaches based on patients’ individual characteristics. © 2020, Fondazione Società Italiana di Neurologia
