Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter
We propose that cold dark matter is made of Kaluza-Klein particles and
explore avenues for its detection. The lightest Kaluza-Klein state is an
excellent dark matter candidate if standard model particles propagate in extra
dimensions and Kaluza-Klein parity is conserved. We consider Kaluza-Klein gauge
bosons. In sharp contrast to the case of supersymmetric dark matter, these
annihilate to hard positrons, neutrinos and photons with unsuppressed rates.
Direct detection signals are also promising. These conclusions are generic to
bosonic dark matter candidates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, discussion of spin-independent cross section

Generalized Analysis of Weakly-Interacting Massive Particle Searches
We perform a generalized analysis of data from WIMP search experiments for
point-like WIMPs of arbitrary spin and general Lorenz-invariant WIMP-nucleus
interaction. We show that in the non-relativistic limit only spin-independent
(SI) and spin-dependent (SD) WIMP-nucleon interactions survive, which can be
parameterized by only five independent parameters. We explore this
five-dimensional parameter space to determine whether the annual modulation
observed in the DAMA experiment can be consistent with all other experiments.
The pure SI interaction is ruled out except for very small region of parameter
space with the WIMP mass close to 50 GeV and the ratio of the WIMP-neutron to
WIMP-proton SI couplings . For the predominantly SD
interaction, we find an upper limit to the WIMP mass of about 18 GeV, which can
only be weakened if the constraint stemming from null searches for energetic
neutrinos from WIMP annihilation the Sun is evaded. None of the regions of the
parameter space that can reconcile all WIMP search results can be easily
accommodated in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure
Lepton Flavor Violation: Constraints from exotic muon to electron conversion
The exotic neutrinoless nuclear conversion is studied within
the conventional extensions of the standard model as well as in the minimal
supersymmetric (SUSY) models with and without R-parity conservation. The
dependence of the conversion rates on the nucleon and nuclear
structure is consistently taken into account. Using our calculated transition
matrix elements and the available experimental data on the branching ratio
for Ti and Pb as well as the expected experimental
sensitivity for Al employed as a target in the planned at Brookhaven
conversion (MECO) experiment, we extract very severe constraints
for the flavor violation parameters. We especially emphasize on the constraints
resulting for SUSY R-parity violating parameters.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. Based on the Invited talk given by T.S. Kosmas

CURVACE - CURVed Artificial Compound Eyes
International audienceCURVACE aims at designing, developing, and assessing CURVed Artificial Compound Eyes, a radically novel family of vision systems. This innovative approach will provide more efficient visual abilities for embedded applications that require motion analysis in low-power and small packages. Compared to conventional cameras, artificial compound eyes will offer a much larger field of view with negligible distortion and exceptionally high temporal resolution in smaller size and weight that will fit the requirements of a wide range of applications
Spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron at low values of x and Q^2
We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry
A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1
GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is
tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The
measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole
range of x.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Measurement of the proton and deuteron structure functions, F2p and F2d, and of the ratio sigma(L)/sigma(T)
The muon-proton and muon-deuteron inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross
sections were measured in the kinematic range 0.002 < x < 0.60 and 0.5 < Q2 <
75 GeV2 at incident muon energies of 90, 120, 200 and 280 GeV. These results
are based on the full data set collected by the New Muon Collaboration,
including the data taken with a small angle trigger. The extracted values of
the structure functions F2p and F2d are in good agreement with those from other
experiments. The data cover a sufficient range of y to allow the determination
of the ratio of the longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon
absorption cross sections, R= sigma(L)/sigma(T), for 0.002 < x < 0.12 . The
values of R are compatible with a perturbative QCD prediction; they agree with
earlier measurements and extend to smaller x.Comment: In this replacement the erroneously quoted R values in tables 3-6 for
x>0.12, and R1990 values in tables 5-6 for all x, have been corrected, and
the cross sections in tables 3-4 have been adapted. Everything else,
including the structure functions F2, remained unchanged. 22 pages, LateX,
including figures, with two .sty files, and three separate f2tab.tex files
for the F2-tables. Accepted for publication in Nucl.Phys.B 199
Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the
nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events,
Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final
state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV
polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity
asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +-
0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta
G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3
(GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Polarised Quark Distributions in the Nucleon from Semi-Inclusive Spin Asymmetries
We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively
and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised
muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range 1
GeV. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new
data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two.
From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the
polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at
=10 GeV. The polarised valence quark distribution, , is positive and the polarisation increases with . The polarised
valence quark distribution, , is negative and the non-strange
sea distribution, , is consistent with zero over the measured
range of . We find for the first moments , and
, where we assumed
. We also determine for the first time the
second moments of the valence distributions .Comment: 17 page
Measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on transversely polarised protons
The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply
inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from
the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At
large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are
observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for
positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range.
These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these
asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation
functions.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 figure
Measurement of the Spin Structure of the Deuteron in the DIS Region
We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the
spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 <
Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised
6-LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments
and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x <
0.03.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, subm. to PLB, revised: author list, Fig. 4,
